Fault Diagnosis of Gearbox Based Pitch Drives in Wind Turbines : Fault Detection by Support Vector Machine Using Motor Current Signal Analysis
2020
Master's thesis in Renewable energy (ENE500) The growing dependence on wind power in recent years has increased the demand for reliantwind turbines. The pitch system of a wind turbine is one of the components with the highest failure rates. The most common way of diagnosing pitch system faults is currently through vibration analysis, which requires the installation of vibration sensors. This thesis presents a non-intrusive method for fault detection of the planetary gearbox in an electric wind tur-bine pitch system. The method is based on using the three-phase motor currents from the induction motor of the pitch system to calculate a DC offset using Extended Park’s vector approach (EPVA). B…
Voltage Regulation Assessment in the Distributed Network with Wind Turbines and Photovoltaics Implemented
2019
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2019 High penetration of Distributed Generators (DGs) in the Distributed Network (DN) could cause undesirable operating conditions. The DN isby conventional means planned, andoperated in a passivemanner, i.e., the level of monitoring is low, and the power flow ispredicted in order to provide satisfactory power quality at the customer’s Point of Common Coupling (PCC). However, the implementation of DGs based on intermittent renewable energy sources, such as Photovoltaics (PV) or Wind Turbines (WT) stress the existing voltage regulation scheme in the DN. One of the objectives of the Distribution System Operators (DSO) is to provide…
DESIGN, MODELING, AND FABRICATION OF THERMOELECTRIC GENERATOR FOR WASTE HEAT RECOVERY IN LOCAL PROCESS INDUSTRY
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 The waste heat from energy company consumption sectors, when rejected into atmosphere, are useless and it contributes to global warming. Nowadays industrial activities and energy sectors (power stations, oil refineries, coke ovens, etc.) are the most energy consuming sectors worldwide and, consequently, the responsible for the release of large quantities of industrial waste heat to the environment by means of hot exhaust gases, cooling media and heat lost from hot equipment surfaces and heated products. Recovering and reusing these waste heats would provide an attractive opportunity for a low-carbon and less costly energy re…
Intelligent estimation of the wake losses in wind farms : Artificial neural network estimation of the power of a wind farm considering the effect of …
2018
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2018 The transition from non-renewable to renewable energy production requires a detailed optimization and quantification of the generated power. The loss of power due to wake effect is a common problem for wind farms. The wake effect is the reduction of velocity and increase of turbulence in the wind flow downstream from a wind turbine. The wake effect is a complex multivariable phenomenon and its understanding iscapital forappropriate estimations of the power of a wind field and its turbines. This thesis builds an artificial neural network based on machine learning to model the performance of a single wind farm owned by WEICAN (…
System modeling and dispatch schedule optimization of combined PV battery system using linear optimization
2021
Master's thesis in Renewable energy (ENE500) Energy storage plays a vital role in paving the way for more renewable penetration. The technology is costly, but intelligent solutions regarding dispatch strategies and system design can help reduce the total cost over the projected lifetime of a system. For this thesis, a customizable linear programming algorithm is created within Python to optimize the battery energy scheduling based on generated PV power, electricity cost and load demand. The commercial system optimization tool HOMER is used to verify the code by running simulations based on historic data collected from Nord Pool and UiAs own photovoltaic system. One benefit of the custom mad…

2019
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2019 This thesis consider a case study of a PV/wind/battery hybrid energy system installed at Scanmatic ASheadquarters in Arendal, Norway. The energy system is a stand-alone and off-grid hybrid system. It consistof four PV panels of 20 W with different tilt and orientation, a wind turbine of 300 W and a battery of1.4 kWh. This work consider machine learning and artificial intelligence in Python 3 for prediction andoptimization. Machine learning is used to predict the power production from the system components basedon the weather data at site. Artificial intelligence is used to optimize the system size based on cost and theabilit…
Characterization of coating on graphite anode material for lithium-ion batteries
2021
Master's thesis in Renewable energy (ENE500) To improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries, the graphite anode can be treated with special coating. Thus the charge transfer resistance through the material can be lowered and thereby enable e.g. faster charging. The amount of coating is essential the improve the performance. The thesis is investigating thermogravimetric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as a method to identify an optimal relation between the amount of coating and the charge transfer resistance. There is found that lower material resistivity gives a higher weight loss where it is assumed that the coating is oxidising, methods for both a relative difference in th…
Ammonia Fuelled Solid Oxide Fuel Cell to Power Maritime Applications
2021
Master's thesis in Renewable energy (ENE500) Ammonia fuelled solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems are regarded as a promising alternative for energy production due to high efficiency and low environmental impact. Ammonia is a carbon free compound with high energy density, low production cost and much simpler transport-and storage properties than hydrogen. The state-of-the-art SOFC contains a Ni/YSZ anode which has proven to be an effective catalyst to crack ammonia at intermediate temperatures (∼700°C). In this study an experimental work was conducted using an Open Flange SOFC test set-up with a planar anode-supported single cell consisting of a Ni/YSZ anode, YSZ electrolyte, and LSM cathod…

A novel learning automata game with local feedback for parallel optimization of hydropower production
2017
Master's thesis Information- and communication technology IKT590 - University of Agder 2017 Hydropower optimization for multi-reservoir systems is classi ed as a combinatorial optimization problem with large state-space that is particularly di cult to solve. There exist no golden standard when solving such problems, and many proposed algorithms are domain speci c. The literature describes several di erent techniques where linear programming approaches are extensively discussed, but tends to succumb to the curse of dimensionality problem when the state vector dimensions increase. This thesis introduces LA LCS, a novel learning automata algorithm that utilizes a parallel form of local feedbac…
