Gendered Migratory Pathways: Exploring the Work Trajectories of Long-Term Romanian Migrants

2018

This chapter analyzes the work trajectories of Romanian returnees who lived and worked for a long period of time in other EU countries. To understand the evolution of the work dimension of migrants’ lives, the chapter is built on subjective evaluations of their work experiences before migration, during their stay abroad, and upon return. The qualitative methodology and homogenous sample allow us to employ a gendered perspective on the relationship between international migration and individuals’ work trajectories. Employing a classical sociological distinction between agency and structure, the chapter illustrates four contrasting patterns of work trajectories. Agentic models are differently…

Reactivación participativa del espacio público. Estudios de caso en Valencia y Madrid

2017

[EN] This work aims to understand the phenomenon of what we have propose to call "participatory reactivation of public space", which is characterized by the direct participation of citizens in the creation and management of social and cultural activities in public spaces, as part of a general will to reclaim that space as truly "public", where the citizens have power in the decision-making processes. This movement has been reinforced by the establishment of professional collectives and initiatives from public institutions. Seven case studies of organizations from Valencia and Madridwere conducted, in the form of semi-structured in-depth interviews,in order to define the shared characteristi…

Rural livelihood diversification: a solution for poverty in the post‐Soviet rural Baltic states?

2019

This article analyses rural livelihood diversification through a longitudinal follow‐up survey, that targets former collective farm workers in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It argues, that between 1995 and 2010 the former collective farm workers employed three distinct livelihood diversification strategies in order to create their living. A wage‐based livelihood diversification strategy, which does not include any agricultural practices, was more common among the better‐off households. A farm‐based livelihood diversification strategy, which does not rely on salaries, was more often employed by the poor. A mixed strategy, that combines both wage income and farm activities, was used by both …

Sequencing toponymic change: A quantitative longitudinal analysis of street renaming in Sibiu, Romania.

2021

Recent scholarship in critical toponymy studies has refashioned the understanding of street names from innocent labels to nominal loci of historical memory and vectors of collective identity that are embroiled with power relations. Urban nomenclatures consist of more than mere linguistic signposts deployed onto space to facilitate navigation. Street names are also powerful signposts that indicate the political regime and its socio-cultural values. Drawing on these theoretical insights, this paper is focused on Sibiu (Romania) and explore the city’s shifting namescape in a longitudinal perspective spanning one century and a half of modern history (1875–2020). The analysis is based on a compl…

Transnational Political Activities of the Swedish Finn Youth Organization

2017

This article looks at the Swedish Finn Youth Organization’s transnational political activities, and how they have developed. In the beginning, the youth organization modelled itself after its mother organization and joined the Finnish Expatriate Parliament (FEP), which made its participation in transnational practices easy. The case study of the Swedish Finn Youth Organization in Stockholm, Sweden, demonstrates that if the younger generation is given an opportunity to establish and govern their own associations, new forms of organization can be expected. The younger generation has distinguished itself from the older generation’s associations by cooperating with other minorities and taking m…

Genre-adaptive Semantic Computing and Audio-based Modelling for Music Mood Annotation

2016

This study investigates whether taking genre into account is beneficial for automatic music mood annotation in terms of core affects valence, arousal, and tension, as well as several other mood scales. Novel techniques employing genre-adaptive semantic computing and audio-based modelling are proposed. A technique called the ACTwg employs genre-adaptive semantic computing of mood-related social tags, whereas ACTwg-SLPwg combines semantic computing and audio-based modelling, both in a genre-adaptive manner. The proposed techniques are experimentally evaluated at predicting listener ratings related to a set of 600 popular music tracks spanning multiple genres. The results show that ACTwg outpe…

METALANG. Protocolo franco-español de exploración de habilidades metalingüísticas en niños de 6 a 9 años: un estudio preliminar

2012

International audience; In this work are described the principles of functional-pragmatic and the reasons for developing an exploration protocol for natural metalinguistic abilities. This study explains the base hypothesis and structure of METALANG protocol. This protocol consists in a Test and a Questionnaire for parents with two different scales: A = Ability, B = Frequency. Each element of the protocol has 6 sections and 40 items. It is performed a preliminary contrast with 12 subjects aged 6 to 9 years. Among the 12 subjects, 4 were diagnosed with dysphasia. METALANG shows high scores in reliability and internal consistency. This result confirms the hypothesis that it is possible a joint…

Acoustic Scene Classification with Squeeze-Excitation Residual Networks

2020

Acoustic scene classification (ASC) is a problem related to the field of machine listening whose objective is to classify/tag an audio clip in a predefined label describing a scene location (e. g. park, airport, etc.). Many state-of-the-art solutions to ASC incorporate data augmentation techniques and model ensembles. However, considerable improvements can also be achieved only by modifying the architecture of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this work we propose two novel squeeze-excitation blocks to improve the accuracy of a CNN-based ASC framework based on residual learning. The main idea of squeeze-excitation blocks is to learn spatial and channel-wise feature maps independently…

Time Difference of Arrival Estimation from Frequency-Sliding Generalized Cross-Correlations Using Convolutional Neural Networks

2020

The interest in deep learning methods for solving traditional signal processing tasks has been steadily growing in the last years. Time delay estimation (TDE) in adverse scenarios is a challenging problem, where classical approaches based on generalized cross-correlations (GCCs) have been widely used for decades. Recently, the frequency-sliding GCC (FS-GCC) was proposed as a novel technique for TDE based on a sub-band analysis of the cross-power spectrum phase, providing a structured two-dimensional representation of the time delay information contained across different frequency bands. Inspired by deep-learning-based image denoising solutions, we propose in this paper the use of convolutio…
