A study of densified biochar as carbon source in the silicon and ferrosilicon production

Abstract Biochar pellets were investigated as renewable reducing agents in substitution of coal and coke in the silicon and ferrosilicon production, where a high reactivity, good mechanical properties and low feedstock costs are appreciated. The usage of pyrolysis oil as binder was investigated as way to improve the quality of the pellets. Norway spruce biochar produced at 500, 800 and 1100 °C, was pelletized blended with pyrolysis oil and lignosulphonate. In this manuscript, a theoretical and experimental study of the RF spectrum radiated by a multipactor discharge, occurring within a realistic microwave component based on rectangular waveguides, is reported. Abstract Chromic acid anodizing is important for the corrosion protection of aerospace aluminium alloys. Previous study has demonstrated that SO 4 2 − impurity in the chromic acid affects the film growth on aluminium at a voltage of 100 V. The present work further investigates aluminium and extends the study to industrial anodizing conditions (Bengough-Stuart (B-S) process) and to the AA 2024-T3 alloy. It is shown that SO 4 2 − concentrations between ~ 38–300 ppm reduce the film growth rate for aluminium anodized at 100 V in comparison with an electrolyte than contains ≤ 1.5 ppm SO 4 2 − , whereas ~ 1500–3000 ppm SO 4 2 have an opposite effect and lead to an unstable pore diameter. Abstract A hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) compound is subjected to ageing in a simulated oil and gas environment in accordance with ISO 23936-2 standard at two elevated temperatures (130 °C and 150 °C) for a period of up to 9 months. Shore D hardness, thermal expansion, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, compression and compression set (CS) measurements are made before and after the chemical exposure. The hardness, modulus at short times, degree of relaxation and CS increases while the coefficient of thermal expansion in HNBR tends to decrease with ageing time and temperature. Blown-up toric surfaces with non-polyhedral effective cone

We construct examples of projective toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone, both in characteristic $0$ and in every prime characteristic $p$. As a consequence, we prove that the pseudo-effective cone of the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli space $\overline M_{0,n}$ of stable rational curves is not polyhedral for $n\geq 10$ in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for all primes $p$. Many of these toric surfaces are related to a very interesting class of arithmetic threefolds that we call arithmetic elliptic pairs of infinite order. This note concerns Loomis-Whitney inequalities in Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$: $$|K| \lesssim \prod_{j=1}^{2n}|\pi_j(K)|^{\frac{n+1}{n(2n+1)}}, \qquad K \subset \mathbb{H}^n.$$ Here $\pi_{j}$, $j=1,\ldots,2n$, are the vertical Heisenberg projections to the hyperplanes $\{x_j=0\}$, respectively, and $|\cdot|$ refers to a natural Haar measure on either $\mathbb{H}^n$, or one of the hyperplanes. The Loomis-Whitney inequality in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ is a direct consequence of known $L^p$ improving properties of the standard Radon transform in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Uniformization of metric surfaces using isothermal coordinates

We establish a uniformization result for metric surfaces - metric spaces that are topological surfaces with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Using the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we show that a metric surface that can be covered by quasiconformal images of Euclidean domains is quasiconformally equivalent to a Riemannian surface. To prove this, we construct suitable isothermal coordinates.
