Sustainable Approaches for Highway Runoff Management During Construction and Operation

2022

Paper V and paper VI have not been published yet. Environmentally friendly approaches for highway runoff management during construction and operation are considered in this project. First, the state of the art in runoff management in terms of characterization, treatment, and modeling approaches were surveyed, and knowledge gaps were identified. Then, the characterization and treatment of tunneling wastewater (by natural and chemical coagulants) was investigated. In the next stage, the vulnerability of water quality to road construction activities was investigated by analyzing field monitoring data. In addition, two different approaches, involving information theory and gamma test theory, we…

Transition to a fossil- and emission-free construction industry

2018

Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management IND590 - University of Agder 2018 The object for this thesis is to see how Nettpartner, which is Norway’s largest electrical infrastructure contractor, can contribute to the green change in the construction industry. To go green has become a big topic in the Norwegian construction industry during the last few years, and in 2017 a report concluded that the Norwegian construction industry could reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases with close to 99 % if the industry planned better before they started building. The method used in this research is the constructive research. The aim of constructive research is to solve practical…

Implementering av maskinsyn for montering av fasadeplater

2017

Masteroppgave i mekatronikk MAS500 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 The construction industry has seen a surge in efficiency and automation solutions in recent years. MacGregor, in cooperation with the University of Agder want to use crane and lifting technology to streamline construction processes. Facade panels are widely used due to ease of installation and require minimal maintenance. The process associated with installation has an automation potential. This thesis looks at the implementation of machine vision for installation of facade panels. Installation is done using a ABB IRB6600 industrial robot and a vacuum tool. The machine vision is based on OpenCV and C++. The main components of t…

Silica Green Stone as an SCM in concrete paving stones production : In order to reduce the total environmental footprint

2021

Master's thesis in Civil and structural engineering (BYG508) The cement industry is responsible for around 7% of the global CO2 emissions. Reducing this number has been on the forefront of the industry's mind for decades, but even with constant improvement and constant reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne cement used, the increasing globalization has kept the emissions high. Research in the industry has discovered supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), that when partly replacing cement will produce most of the same results. SCMs are by-products from other industries and natural progression has led to the need for new ones. This thesis is, together with UiA, Aaltvedt Betong, SINTEF and…

Post weld heat treatment of welded low alloyed steel pipes : Use of AISI 4130 steel in hydrogen sulfide environment and its post weld heat treatment …

2019

Master's Thesis Civil and Constructional Engineering BYG508 - University of Agder 2019 Based on the results from pre-projectand workcovered by this thesis, no better alternatives to AISI 4130 material was found, neither could it be safely concluded for removal of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requirementsin any parts of high-pressure drilling fluid system. SinceAISI 4130 hasshown to be the optimal choice for the system,it was decided to look forimprovementsof welding procedure by optimization ofpost weld heat treatmentforthis steel.Heat treatment is an expansive and time-consuming procedure that,if not done correctly, could weaken the materialand jeopardize the safetyof the system.Inthis thesis, whi…

Electronic structure of EuO spin filter tunnel contacts directly on silicon

2011

We present an electronic structure study of a magnetic oxide/ semiconductor model system, EuO on silicon, which is dedicated for efficient spin injection and spin detection in silicon-based spintronics devices. A combined electronic structure analysis of Eu core levels and valence bands using hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy was performed to quantify the nearly ideal stoichiometry of EuO “spin filter” tunnel barriers directly on silicon, and the absence of silicon oxide at the EuO/Si interface. These results provide evidence for the successful integration of a magnetic oxide tunnel barrier with silicon, paving the way for the future integration of magnetic oxides into functional spintr…

Combination of Searches for Invisible Higgs Boson Decays with the ATLAS Experiment

2019

Dark matter particles, if sufficiently light, may be produced in decays of the Higgs boson. This Letter presents a statistical combination of searches for H → invisible decays where H is produced according to the standard model via vector boson fusion, Z(ℓℓ)H, and W/Z(had)H, all performed with the ATLAS detector using 36.1  fb⁻¹ of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13  TeV at the LHC. In combination with the results at √s = 7 and 8 TeV, an exclusion limit on the H → invisible branching ratio of 0.26(0.17-0.05+0.07) at 95% confidence level is observed (expected).

Resolution of the ATLAS muon spectrometer monitored drift tubes in LHC Run 2

2019

The momentum measurement capability of the ATLAS muon spectrometer relies fundamentally on the intrinsic single-hit spatial resolution of the monitored drift tube precision tracking chambers. Optimal resolution is achieved with a dedicated calibration program that addresses the specific operating conditions of the 354 000 high-pressure drift tubes in the spectrometer. The calibrations consist of a set of timing offsets and drift time to drift distance transfer relations, and result in chamber resolution functions. This paper describes novel algorithms to obtain precision calibrations from data collected by ATLAS in LHC Run 2 and from a gas monitoring chamber, deployed in a dedicated gas fac…

Zero-range model of traffic flow.

2005

A multi--cluster model of traffic flow is studied, in which the motion of cars is described by a stochastic master equation. Assuming that the escape rate from a cluster depends only on the cluster size, the dynamics of the model is directly mapped to the mathematically well-studied zero-range process. Knowledge of the asymptotic behaviour of the transition rates for large clusters allows us to apply an established criterion for phase separation in one-dimensional driven systems. The distribution over cluster sizes in our zero-range model is given by a one--step master equation in one dimension. It provides an approximate mean--field dynamics, which, however, leads to the exact stationary s…
