Morphogenetic approaches to religion : understanding religion from the perspective of Margaret Archer
2010
Masteroppgave i religion- Universitetet i Agder 2010 The general theory and methodology offered by Margaret Archer under the name of “the morphogenetic approach” represents the major developments within critical realist social theory. Archer combines the critical realist ontology of stratified reality and complex causality with emergence- and interest theory in an innovative framework for social-scientific analysis. By taking this framework to the sociology of religion this thesis sheds light on familiar topics from a novel angle. The morphogenetic approach has as its key feature an analytically dualistic view of structure and agency. A stratified model of social agency highlights how the c…

Her går millioner av mennesker hvert år (Bradley 2009). I Norge er leden til Nidaros den mest kjente. I min oppgave ønsker jeg å ta utgangspunkt i en av de mindre, lokale pilegrimsledene. I Agder og Telemark bispedømme er det ledene fra Seljord…
Empathic engagement in caregiving professions : in light of Heinz Kohut´s self psychology
2010
Masteroppgave i religion- Universitetet i Agder 2010 This thesis explores and illustrates ways in which a conceptual framework based on Heinz Kohut’s self psychology, complemented by Kristin D. Neff’s conceptualization of selfcompassion, can help illuminate how six professional caregivers from different disciplines relate to themselves as they are faced with the call for empathic engagement in their practices. The study is qualitative insofar as the goal of the investigation is describing, discovering and understanding, rather than predicting and confirming. However, in the collection of data this thesis combines the use of a qualitative method, conducting semi-structured interviews, with a…
The Powerlessness of Religious Power in a Pluralist Society
2003
The final, definitive version of this paper has been published in Social compass, 50/2,2003 by SAGE Publications Ltd., All rights reserved. © http://scp.sagepub.com/ In pluralist societies adhering to liberal and individualistic ideas, strict and conservative groups face some serious dilemmas if they want to recruit and keep members. In a liberal society, the most important form of religious power is normative power. Strict and demanding religious organizations will have difficulties in a liberal, anti-authoritarian society. Such organizations may succeed in increasing their control over loyal members, but in a broader context, they will be branded as authoritarian by the secular media and …
How to Survive the Anthropocene: Adaptive Atheism and the Evolution of Homo deiparensis
2015
Published version of an article from the journal: Religions. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rel6020724 Why is it so easy to ignore the ecological and economic crises of the Anthropocene? This article unveils some of the religious biases whose covert operation facilitates the repression or rejection of warnings about the consequences of extreme climate change and excessive capitalist consumption. The evolved defaults that are most relevant for our purposes here have to do with mental credulity toward religious content (beliefs about supernatural agents) and with social congruity in religious contexts (behaviors shaped by supernatural rituals). Learning how to co…

Methodology for the estimation of the increase in time loss due to future increase in tropical cyclone intensity in Japan
2009
Published version of an article from the journal: Climatic Change. The original publication is available at Spingerlink. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10584-009-9725-9 The present paper develops a methodology for estimating the risks and consequences of possible future increases in tropical cyclone intensities that would allow policy makers to relatively quickly evaluate the cost of different mitigation strategies. The methodology simulates future tropical cyclones by modifying the intensity of historical tropical cyclones between the years 1978 and 2007. It then uses a Monte Carlo Simulation to obtain the expected number of hours that a certain area can expect to be affected by winds of a giv…
Structural Vibration Control for a Class of Connected Multistructure Mechanical Systems
2012
Published version of an article from the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher:http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/942910 A mathematical model to compute the overall vibrational response of connected multistructure mechanical systems is presented. Using the proposed model, structural vibration control strategies for seismic protection of multibuilding systems can be efficiently designed. Particular attention is paid to the design of control configurations that combine passive interbuilding dampers with local feedback control systems implemented in the buildings. These hybrid active-passive control strategies possess the good properties of passive contro…
