The glass transition in (KI)0.5(ND4I)0.5 mixed crystals as studied by deuteron spin-lattice relaxation

Abstract Nuclear spin resonance has been used to study the deuteron magnetization recovery in (KI)0.5(ND4I)0.5 mixed crystals. At high temperatures the spin-lattice-relaxation is exponential. For T ⪅ 45 K deviations from this simple behaviour occur, signalling the onset of spatial inhomogeneities due to the formation of an orientational glass. The results demonstrate that the transition of (KI)0.5(ND4I)0.5 into the glassy state is driven by the freezing of random bonds.

Sequence-specific and DNA structure-dependent interactions of Escherichia coli MutS and human p53 with DNA

Many proteins involved in DNA repair systems interact with DNA that has structure altered from the typical B-form helix. Using magnetic beads to immobilize DNAs containing various types of structures, we evaluated the in vitro binding activities of two well-characterized DNA repair proteins, Escherichia coli MutS and human p53. E. coli MutS bound to double-stranded DNAs, with higher affinity for a G/T mismatch compared to a G/A mismatch and highest affinity for larger non-B-DNA structures. E. coli MutS bound best to DNA between pH 6 and 9. Homocoupling of terminal alkynes on calcite (10.4)

Abstract On-surface synthesis has been identified as highly versatile strategy to prepare molecular structures on surfaces with single-atom precision. Inspired by the classical Glaser coupling, homocoupling of terminal alkynes has attracted great attention for on-surface synthesis. This coupling is known for providing a rigid and linear linkage, which is highly interesting for the synthesis of molecular wires. Macroscopic persistent currents in YBa2Cu3O7

Persistent currents in polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7 rings have been investigated by measuring the spatial distribution of the magnetic flux trapped in field-cooled samples. The results unambiguously show that macroscopic persistent ring currents exist. The critical current density depends very sensitively on the sample quality, reachingj c ≈250 A/cm2 at 77 K for our best samples.

Polar relaxation mode in pure and iron-doped barium titanate

A dielectric relaxation peak is reported in ${\mathrm{BaTiO}}_{3}$ and in ${\mathrm{BaTi}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{x}}$${\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{x}}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. It is nearly monodispersive, centered in the ${10}^{8}$-Hz range, and slowest at the transition temperature ${T}_{c}$\ensuremath{\simeq}413 K from the cubic to the tetragonal phase. Iron doping lowers ${T}_{c}$ and slows down this relaxation mode.

Growth kinetics of racemic heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid nanowires on calcite (104).

Molecular self-assembly of racemic heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid on a dielectric substrate at room temperature can be used to generate wire-like organic nanostructures consisting of single and double molecular rows. By means of non-contact atomic force microscopy, we investigate the growth of the wire-like pattern after deposition by experimental and theoretical means. From analyzing the time dependence of the mean row length, two distinct regimes were found. At the early post-deposition stage, the mean length grows in time. Citric Acid Based Carbon Dots with Amine Type Stabilizers: pH-Specific Luminescence and Quantum Yield Characteristics

We report the synthesis and spectroscopic characteristics of two different sets of carbon dots (CDs) formed by hydrothermal reaction between citric acid and polyethylenimine (PEI) or 2,3-diaminopyridine (DAP). Although the formation of amide-based species and the presence of citrazinic acid type derivates assumed to be responsible for a blue emission is confirmed for both CDs by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry, a higher abundance of sp2-hybridized nitrogen is observed for DAP-based CDs, which causes a red-shift of the n-π* absorption band relative to the one of PEI-based CDs. Polymer chains confined into tubes with attractive walls: A Monte Carlo simulation

A bead-spring off-lattice model of a polymer chain with repulsive interactions among repeating units confined into straight tubes of various cross sections, DT2, is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. We are also varying the chain length from N = 16 to 128 and the strength of a short-range attractive interaction between the repeating units and the walls of the tube. Longitudinal and perpendicular static linear dimensions of the chains are analyzed, as well as the density profile of repeating units across the tube. Elastic properties of polymer interfaces: Aggregation of pure diblock, mixed diblock, and triblock copolymers

Block copolymers adsorbing to an interface between two immiscible homopolymers modify the elastic constants of this interface. Within self-consistent field calculations for Gaussian chains, we determine how the bending constants vary in dependence on the block copolymer concentration and architecture. Four phenomena are discussed. (i) When a tricritical or isotropic Lifshitz critical point is approached in a ternary mixture by varying the concentration of diblock copolymers or changing temperature, the elastic constants vanish. Racemic and Optically Pure Heptahelicene-2-carboxylic Acid: Its Synthesis and Self-Assembly into Nanowire-Like Aggregates

Heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid was effectively synthesised from suitably functionalised naphthalene building blocks. Methoxy-substituted 1,1'-ethyne-1,2-diylbis(2-but-3-yn-1-ylnaphthalene) was cyclised in the presence of CpCo(CO)(2)/PPh(3) to 2-methoxy-7,8,11,12-tetrahydroheptahelicene, which was converted into heptahelicen-2-yl trifluoromethanesulfonate. This reactive intermediate underwent Pd(OAc)(2)/dppp-catalysed methoxycarbonylation reaction to provide, after hydrolysis, heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid.
