The evolution of metazoan α-carbonic anhydrases and their roles in calcium carbonate biomineralization

2014

The carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) superfamily is a class of ubiquitous metallo-enzymes that catalyse the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. The ?-CA family, present in all metazoan clades, is a key enzyme involved in a wide range of physiological functions including pH regulation, respiration, photosynthesis, and biocalcification. This paper reviews the evolution of the ?-CA family, with an emphasis on metazoan ?-CA members involved in biocalcification. Phylogenetic analyses reveal a complex evolutionary history of ?-CAs, and suggest ?-CA was independently co-opted into a variety of skeleton forming roles (e.g. as a provider of HCO3? ions, a structural protein, a nucleation activ…

On the use of Denoising Autoencoders and Deep Convolutional Adversarial Networks for Automated Removal of Date Stamps

2019

Master's thesis Information- and communication technology IKT590 - University of Agder 2019 This thesis investigates to what extent the deep learning models such as DenoisingAutoencoder (DAE) and Deep Convolution General Adversarial Net (DCGAN)automate the removal of the date stamps from images with high resolution whilepreserving the rest of the images. Both DAE and DCGAN algorithms are im-plemented with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). The DAE algorithm canperform this task with entirely satisfactory results. The DAE can reconstruct theoriginal images from corrupted inputs with date stamps. While DCGAN deliverspoor yet interesting results. The images generated by the DCGAN are quite d…

Exact Closed-Form Expressions for the Distribution, the Level-Crossing Rate, and the Average Duration of Fades of the Capacity of OSTBC-MIMO Channels

2009

Article from the journal: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology Official site: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TVT.2008.927038 This paper deals with some important statistical properties of the channel capacity of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems with orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC) transmission. We assume that all the subchannels are uncorrelated. For OSTBC-MIMO systems, exact closed-form expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF), the cumulative distribution function (CDF), the level-crossing rate (LCR), and the average duration of fades (ADF) of the channel capacity. Furthermore, it will be shown that these exact closed-form expressions can be …

The Influence of Spatial Correlation and Severity of Fading on the Statistical Properties of the Capacity of OSTBC Nakagami-m MIMO Channels

2009

This paper deals with the analysis of statistical prop- erties of the capacity of spatially uncorrelated orthogonal space- time block coded (OSTBC) Nakagami-m multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) channels. We have derived exact closed-form expressions for the probability density function (PDF), cumula- tive distribution function (CDF), level-crossing rate (LCR), and average duration of fades (ADF) of the channel capacity. We have also investigated the statistical properties of the approximated capacity of spatially correlated OSTBC Nakagami-m MIMO channels. The results are studied for different values of the fading parameter m, corresponding to different fading conditions. It is observed …

Determinants of Blockchain Technology Introduction in Organizations: an Empirical Study among Experienced Practitioners

2021

Abstract Blockchain is expected to enable new types of interorganizational relationships, new approaches to governance and new approaches to settlement and clearing processes. Neverthless, although the interest on blockchain is on the rise, there are not many blockchain implementations in organizations and there is limited empirical research investigating the reasons for this. This paper contributes to filling this gap by investigating the following research question: what are the impeding and motivating factors for organizational blockchain adoption? Data were collected through a survey based on pairwise comparisons of key factors identified in the literature. The data collected were analy…

3-D image analysis of fluorescent drug binding

2004

Fluorescent ligands provide the means of studying receptors in whole tissues using confocal laser scanning microscopy and have advantages over antibody- or non-fluorescence-based method. Confocal microscopy provides large volumes of images to be measured. Histogram analysis of 3-D image volumes is proposed as a method of graphically displaying large amounts of volumetric image data to be quickly analyzed and compared. The fluorescent ligand BODIPY FL-prazosin (QAPB) was used in mouse aorta. Histogram analysis reports the amount of ligand-receptor binding under different conditions and the technique is sensitive enough to detect changes in receptor availability after antagonist incubation or…

Analysis of Polymorphism C558T of MAL (TIRAP) in Mediterranean Spotted Fever

2014

Analysis of Polymorphism C558T of MAL (TIRAP) in Mediterranean Spotted Fever M. Bova1, L. Scola1, C. Colomba1, L. Vaccarino1, P. Di Gangi1, G. Santini1, G. Giammanco1, C. R. Balistreri1, D. Lio1, L. Titone Lanza Di Scalea1 1University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: In our previous studies, we have demonstrated that cytokine polymorphisms, such as IFNγ +874T/A or IL-17 SNP (7488T/C), might interfere with R. Conorii infection control. In addition, we have reported that +896A/G TLR4 SNP is a component of a genetic background that might influence the clinical outcome of Boutonneuse fever (Mediterranean spotted fever, MSF). The +869G allele, that attenuates receptor signaling, was actual…

Agronomic Evaluation of Ethiopian Mustard (brassica Carinata A. Braun) Germplasm and Physical-energy Characterization of Crop Residues in a Semi-arid…

2017

Brassica carinata A. Braun is one of the most interesting oilseed crops suited to arid and semi-arid areas for energy purposes. Several studies have highlighted the possibility of introducing this species into cropping systems, typical of Mediterranean region. The aims of this study were to evaluate the agronomic performance of Brassica carinata germplasm under Mediterranean climatic conditions and to assess the physical and energy characteristics of crop residues and pellets made from the residues. A total of 20 different accessions of Brassica carinata were compared in a semi-arid area of Sicily (Italy). In the two-year test period, the main morphological and yield parameters of the acces…
