Optical and Vibrational Spectra of CsCl-Enriched GeS2-Ga2S3 Glasses

2016

Optical and FTIR spectroscopy was employed to study the properties of 80GeS2-20Ga2S3-CsCl chalcohalide glasses with CsCl additives in a temperature range of 77–293 K. It is shown that CsCl content results in the shift of fundamental absorption edge in the visible region. Vibrational bands in FTIR spectra of (80GeS2-20Ga2S3)100 − х (СsCl) x (x = 5, 10, and 15) are identified near 2500 cm−1, 3700 cm−1,, around 1580 cm−1, and a feature at 1100 cm−1. Low energy shifts of vibrational frequencies in glasses with a higher amount of CsCl can be caused by possible thermal expansion of the lattice and nanovoid agglomeration formed by CsCl additives in the inner structure of the Ge-Ga-S glass.

Engineered Membranes for Residual Cell Trapping on Microfluidic Blood Plasma Separation Systems: A Comparison between Porous and Nanofibrous Membranes

2021

Blood-based clinical diagnostics require challenging limit-of-detection for low abundance, circulating molecules in plasma. Micro-scale blood plasma separation (BPS) has achieved remarkable results in terms of plasma yield or purity, but rarely achieving both at the same time. Here, we proposed the first use of electrospun polylactic-acid (PLA) membranes as filters to remove residual cell population from continuous hydrodynamic-BPS devices. The membranes hydrophilicity was improved by adopting a wet chemistry approach via surface aminolysis as demonstrated through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Water Contact Angle analysis. The usability of PLA-membranes was assessed through de…

Fourth-order cascaded Raman shift in AsSe chalcogenide suspended-core fiber pumped at 2 μm

2011

International audience; Cascaded Raman wavelength shifting up to the fourth order ranging from 2092 to 2450nm is demonstrated using a nanosecond pump at 1995nm in a low-loss As38Se62 suspended-core microstructured fiber. These four Stokes shifts are obtained with a low peak power of 11W, and only 3W are required to obtain three shifts. The Raman gain coefficient for the fiber is estimated to (1.6 +-0.5)x 10e−11 m/W at 1995nm. The positions and the amplitudes of the Raman peaks are well reproduced by the numerical simulations of the nonlinear propagation.

Light Scattering as an Easy Tool to Measure Vesicles Weight Concentration

2020

Over the last few decades, liposomes have emerged as promising drug delivery systems and effective membrane models for studying biophysical and biological processes. For all applications, knowing their concentration after preparation is crucial. Thus, the development of methods for easily controlling vesicles concentration would be of great utility. A new assay is presented here, based on a suitable analysis of light scattering intensity from liposome dispersions. The method, tested for extrusion preparations, is precise, easy, fast, non-destructive and uses a tiny amount of sample. Furthermore, the scattering intensity can be measured indifferently at different angles, or even by using the…

Fixed Bed Adsorption of Drugs on Silica Aerogel from Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Solutions

2013

Supercritical adsorption coupled with the high adsorption capacity of silica aerogel allows the preparation of a new kind of delivery systems of poor water soluble drugs. In order to overcome drawbacks of conventional techniques where the use of liquid solvents can cause the fracture of aerogel porous structure, in this work a new adsorption process of drugs from a supercritical mixture is proposed. Adsorption takes place from a fluid solution of the drug in supercritical CO2and ethanol as cosolvent. A fixed bed adsorption plant has been developed to allow fast mixing of fluid phase and effective contact in the adsorption column. The use of ethanol as cosolvent allows to overcome the limita…

Service Life of Cementitious Photocatalytic Paints Newly Formulated

2013

The use of photocatalytic products for surface coating of buildings contributes to the sustainability of building interventions, due to the reduction of some atmospheric pollutants and self-cleaning attitude. The world market produces a wide range of coatings, applied in limited thickness, transparent and opaque, high initial performance, although data on their durability are still missing. The knowledge of the performance over time of such innovative products is necessary according to the new EU Regulation No. 305/2011, which introduced for construction works, the seventh requirement on their sustainability and particularly their durability. The study concerns the evaluation of the durabil…

Experimental evaluation of the durability of innovative cementitious coatings: photocatalytic activity and colour

2012

Today, in a world context characterized by high pollution levels and increasingly limited natural resources, even in the building sector, focusing on environmental issues, through energy saving and a more rational use of these resources, both during construction and management, is fundamental. An important contribution in this direction is given by the knowledge of the durability of products and building components, especially when innovative products are applied and no information are available on the reliability and service life. The research concerns the evaluation of the durability of cement-based photocatalytic coatings ("rasanti" in the Italian diction), containing different types of …

On the stability of flat complex vector bundles over parallelizable manifolds

2017

We investigate the flat holomorphic vector bundles over compact complex parallelizable manifolds $G / \Gamma$, where $G$ is a complex connected Lie group and $\Gamma$ is a cocompact lattice in it. The main result proved here is a structure theorem for flat holomorphic vector bundles $E_\rho$ associated to any irreducible representation $\rho : \Gamma \rightarrow \text{GL}(r,{\mathbb C})$. More precisely, we prove that $E_{\rho}$ is holomorphically isomorphic to a vector bundle of the form $E^{\oplus n}$, where $E$ is a stable vector bundle. All the rational Chern classes of $E$ vanish, in particular, its degree is zero. We deduce a stability result for flat holomorphic vector bundles $E_{\r…

CD28, a marker associated with tumoral expansion in multiple myeloma

1998

International audience; CD28 expression was thoroughly investigated on plasma cells of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, multiple myeloma (MM), and human myeloma cell lines. CD28+ plasma cells were detected in 19% of 31 monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, 41% of 116 MM, and 100% of 13 human myeloma cell lines. CD28+ myeloma cells were detected in 21 of 79 (26%) MM cases at diagnosis, 13 of 22 (59%) at medullary relapse (P < 0.009), and 14 of 15 (93%) at extramedullary relapse (P = 0.05), including 10 of 10 (100%) secondary plasma cell leukemias (P = 0.05). Serial studies in individual patients confirmed the emergence of CD28+ myeloma cells with tumoral expa…

Shining castles and humans of metal/floral appearance ? metaphorical language in the Palaiologan romances Kallimachos and Velthandros

2019

About eight centuries after Heliodorus, the Greek novel resurfaced in the twelfth century, in Komnenian Byzantium, and again two centuries later under the Palaiologan dynasty. This latter literary revival was due to the political stability of the imperial Byzantine government, which promoted cultural production, rhetorical education, and patronage networks. Kallimachos and Velthandros, two Palaiologan romances presented as court literature, combine ancient and medieval tropes with rhetorical artistry to blur the boundaries between the artificial and the natural. Castles and objects made of precious metals thus resemble living, natural spaces, and human characters are portrayed in metallurgi…
