Feeding and breeding ecology of three insectivorous birds in Mediterranean ecosystems
2009
Tits (Paridae) are one of the most and better passerines known owing to they are broadly distributed, breeding in different habitats from gardens to forests, and they make use of nest boxes for breeding. Hence, such species are ideal for comparative studies on a large geographical scale. Despite the great amount of information concerned to tits, we still do not really understand life-history strategies of birds living under most ecological conditions. The present thesis is focused on achieving a better understanding of how birds are adapted to their environment. In particular, to examine the existence and the consequences of food limitation in Mediterranean evergreen habitats, through an ad…
High-order Kerr nonlinearity of air calibrated with transient molecular alignment
2009
Talk given by O. Faucher; International audience; Nonlinear electronic Kerr index of the major air constituents has been measured up to high order terms using transient molecular alignment as a reference. Sign reversal associated to negative nonlinearity is observed above a pulse intensity of 26 TW/cm^2.
Landscape composition and farming practices affect the abundance of the codling moth and its predation and parasitism in apple orchards
2016
National audience; There is increasing recognition that landscape management could contribute to sustainable pest control. However, while many studies indicate that the proportion of semi-natural habitat over the landscape correlates positively with the abundance and diversity of natural enemies in elds, results are more equivocal concerning the reduction of pest abundance. This last result is possibly due to the diversity of land-use intensity in the landscapes. In the present studies, we assessed whether amount of semi-natural habitat and pesticide use at both local and landscape scales a ected the abundance of codling moth (Cydia pomonella, lepidoptera), its parasitism and predation of s…
Typology of exogenous organic matters based on chemical and biochemical composition to predict potential nitrogen mineralization
2010
Our aim was to develop a typology predicting potential N availability of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) in soil based on their chemical characteristics. A database of 273 EOMs was constructed including analytical data of biochemical fractionation, organic C and N, and results of N mineralization during incubation of soil–EOM mixtures in controlled conditions. Multiple factor analysis and hierarchical classification were performed to gather EOMs with similar composition and N mineralization behavior. A typology was then defined using composition criteria to predict potential N mineralization. Six classes of EOM potential N mineralization in soil were defined, from high potential N minerali…
Assessing short- and long-term repeatability and stability of personality in captive zebra finches using longitudinal data
2012
11 pages; International audience; Assessing behavioural consistency is crucial to understand the evolution of personality traits. In the present study, we examined the short- and long-term repeatability and stability of two unrelated personality traits - exploratory tendencies and struggling rate - using captive female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). We performed two experimental sessions of behavioural tests with a 7-mo interval, which represents up to one quarter of a zebra finch's life expectancy. We showed that, overall, exploratory tendencies and struggling rate were significantly repeatable in the short term. However, only exploratory tendencies were repeatable in the long term. …
Ave…
