Omalizumab rapidly improves angioedema-related quality of life in adult patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria: X-ACT study data
2018
Background The X-ACT study aims to examine the effect of omalizumab treatment on quality of life (QoL) in chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) patients with angioedema refractory to high doses of H1-antihistamines. Methods In X-ACT, a phase III, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, CSU patients (18–75 years) with ≥4 angioedema episodes during the 6 months before inclusion were randomized (1:1) to receive omalizumab 300 mg or placebo every 4 weeks for 28 weeks. Angioedema-related QoL, skin-related QoL impairment, and psychological well-being were assessed. Results Ninety-one patients were randomized and 68 (omalizumab, n=35; placebo, n=33) completed the 28-week treatment period. At baselin…
Restoring Harmony in the Lifeworld? : Identity, Learning, and Leaving Preelite Sport
2020
Sport provides many youth participants with a central life project, and yet very few eventually fulfill their athletic dreams, which may lead them to disengage from sport entirely. Many studies have explored the processes of athletic retirement, but little is known about how youth athletes actually reconstruct their relationship with sport and embodiment postretirement. The authors explored these issues in the story of “Pilvi,” a Finnish alpine skier who disengaged from sport in her late adolescence. Employing an existential-phenomenological approach, they conducted six low-structured interviews with Pilvi, combined with visual methods, and identified key themes relating to the body, space,…
Robust non-Markovianity in ultracold gases
2012
We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on a probe qubit interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) reservoir. The zero-temperature case was studied in [Haikka P et al 2011 Phys. Rev. A 84 031602], where we proposed a method to probe the effects of dimensionality and scattering length of a BEC based on its behavior as an environment. Here we show that the sensitivity of the probe qubit is remarkably robust against thermal noise. We give an intuitive explanation for the thermal resilience, showing that it is due to the unique choice of the probe qubit architecture of our model.
Suomen ulkomaankaupan kasvu 1600-1800 -luvuilla : juutinrauman tullitilien uudelleenarviointi
2018
Työn tavoite on yhtenäistää Juutinrauman tullitiliaineistoja ja arvioida tullitilien käytettävyyttä Suomen ulkomaankaupan tutkimuksessa. Yhtenäistettyjen aikasarjojen pohjalta voidaan myös tarkastella Suomen – aikaisempaan tutkimukseen verrattuna pidemmän – pitkän aikavälin ulkomaankaupan kehitystä. Työssä rakennetaan uusi Suomea koskeva tietokanta FIN-STRO. Taustateoriana on siten lähtökohtaisesti ankkuroitua teoriaa (aineistopohjainen teoria, grounded theory) muistuttava lähestymistapa. Tutkimus hyödyntää Juutinrauman tullitilejä, joita laadittiin v. 1497–1857. Tutkimus koskee Suomen ulkomaankauppaa v. 1557–1856, jolloin suomalaisia satamia on kirjattu lähtösatamiksi Juutinrauman tullitil…
Effect of transition metals and homogeneous hydrogen producers in the hydrothermal liquefaction of sewage sludge
2022
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of sewage sludge (SS) was performed in the presence of metallic Zn, Fe and Ni to investigate their effect on the performances of the process in terms of product yields and quality. Experiments were performed in subcritical water at 350 ◦C for 10 min using each metal individually and in the presence of homogenous hydrogen producers like formic acid (FA) and KOH. Interesting results were obtained with Zn that when used alone or in the presence of KOH, increased the cumulative biocrude (BC) yields and resulted in energy recoveries (ER) higher than 100% with respect to initial energy content of the biomass, thus indicating that HTL of SS is globally endothermic. …
Uptake of actinides by calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases
2018
Abstract The sorption of actinides (Th, U – Am) was studied in dependence of the solid-to-liquid (S/L) ratio (0.5–20.0 g/L) and the calcium-to-silicon (C:S) ratio. The C:S ratio was varied between 1.80 and 0.70 to simulate the changing composition of the C-S-H phases during cement degradation from high to low C:S ratios. The decrease of the calcium content in the C-S-H phases by time is accompanied by a decrease in pH in the corresponding suspensions from 12.6 to 10.2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the C-S-H phases showed an increasing depletion of Ca on the surface with increasing C:S ratio in comparison to the composition of the solid phase as a whole. The sorption experiments…
Touching the upper limit for ferromagnetic interactions in hetero-bridged dinuclear [Cu-2(II)] complexes using a novel N-5-dinucleating ligand bearin…
2012
A novel N-5-dinucleating ligand 4-amino-3,5-bis(bipyridine-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole allows the preparation for the first time, and under mild conditions, of single and mixed amido(R-NH-)-bridged copper(II) complexes, the latter exhibiting very strong ferromagnetic coupling.
The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the management and course of chronic urticaria
2021
Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically disrupts health care around the globe. The impact of the pandemic on chronic urticaria (CU) and its management are largely unknown. Aim: to understand how CU patients are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; how specialists alter CU patient management; and the course of CU in patients with COVID-19. Materials and methods: our cross-sectional, international, questionnaire-based, multicenter UCARE COVID-CU study assessed the impact of the pandemic on patient consultations, remote treatment, changes in medications, and clinical consequences. Results: the COVID-19 pandemic severely impairs CU patient care, with less than 50% of the weekly numbers o…
Experimental Comparison of the MIG and Friction Stir Welding Processes for AA 6005 Aluminium Alloy
2015
In this study, the mechanical properties of welded joints of AA 6005 aluminum alloy obtained with friction stir welding (FSW) and conventional metal inert gas welding (MIG) are studied. FSW welds were carried out on a semi-automatic milling machine. The performance of FSW and MIG welded joints were identified using tensile and bending impact tests, as far as the environmental aspects are also included in the discussion. The joints obtained with FSW and MIG processes were also investigated in their microstructure. The results indicate that, the microstructure of the friction stir weld is different from that of MIG welded joint. The weld nugget consists of small grains in FSW than those found…
