Non-autonomous rough semilinear PDEs and the multiplicative Sewing Lemma

2021

We investigate existence, uniqueness and regularity for local solutions of rough parabolic equations with subcritical noise of the form $du_t- L_tu_tdt= N(u_t)dt + \sum_{i = 1}^dF_i(u_t)d\mathbf X^i_t$ where $(L_t)_{t\in[0,T]}$ is a time-dependent family of unbounded operators acting on some scale of Banach spaces, while $\mathbf X\equiv(X,\mathbb X)$ is a two-step (non-necessarily geometric) rough path of H\"older regularity $\gamma >1/3.$ Besides dealing with non-autonomous evolution equations, our results also allow for unbounded operations in the noise term (up to some critical loss of regularity depending on that of the rough path $\mathbf X$). As a technical tool, we introduce a versi…

Design, characterization, and first field deployment of a novel aircraft-based aerosol mass spectrometer combining the laser ablation and flash vapor…

2021

In this paper, we present the design, development, and characteristics of the novel aerosol mass spectrometer ERICA (ERC Instrument for Chemical composition of Aerosols; ERC – European Research Council) and selected results from the first airborne field deployment. The instrument combines two well-established methods of real-time in situ measurements of fine particle chemical composition. The first method is the laser desorption and ionization technique, or laser ablation technique, for single-particle mass spectrometry (here with a frequency-quadrupled Nd:YAG laser at λ = 266 nm). The second method is a combination of thermal particle desorption, also called flash vaporization, and electro…

"Oi Herra, säästä meidät muhamettilaisten raivolta" : islaminuskoisten varhaiset (632-750 jaa.) valloitukset 1900-luvun lopun ja 2000-luvun alun läns…

2015

Tutkielman tarkoituksena on tarkastella angloamerikkalaisen historiankirjoituksen antamaa kuvaa islamin varhaisista valloituksista. Tutkimuksen kohteena eivät suoranaisesti ole itse valloitukset, vaan nykyaikaisten länsimaisten historiankirjoittajien niistä luoma kuva. Tutkielmassa vertaillaan eri historioitsijoiden näkemyksiä avainteemoista (lähdemateriaalin käsittely, valloituksiin johtaneet ja ne mahdollistaneet syyt) sekä pohditaan, miten ja miksi ne eroavat toisistaan. Tutkielma on historiografinen kvalitatiivinen kirjallisuustutkimus, jossa käytetään kontekstuaalista tutkimusmenetelmää orientalistisessa viitekehyksessä. Tutkielman alkuperäislähteinä käytetään 1970-luvulta lähtien ilme…

Sr-isotope analysis of speleothems by LA-MC-ICP-MS: High temporal resolution and fast data acquisition

2017

Speleothems are well established climate archives. A wide array of geochemical proxies, including stable isotopes and trace elements are present within speleothems to reconstruct past climate variability. However, each proxy is influenced by multiple factors, often hampering robust interpretation. Sr isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) can provide useful information about water residence time and water mixing in the host rock, as they are not fractionated during calcite precipitation. Laser ablation multi-collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) has rarely been used for determination of Sr isotope signatures in speleothems, as speleothems often do not possess appropriate…

Think globally: Cross-linguistic variation in electrophysiological activity during sentence comprehension

2011

This paper demonstrates systematic cross-linguistic differences in the electrophysiological correlates of conflicts between form and meaning (“semantic reversal anomalies”). These engender P600 effects in English and Dutch (e.g. Kolk et al., 2003 ; Kuperberg et al., 2003), but a biphasic N400 – late positivity pattern in German (Schlesewsky and Bornkessel-Schlesewsky, 2009), and monophasic N400 effects in Turkish (Experiment 1) and Mandarin Chinese (Experiment 2). Experiment 3 revealed that, in Icelandic, semantic reversal anomalies show the English pattern with verbs requiring a position-based identification of argument roles, but the German pattern with verbs requiring a case-based identi…

Loss of SMARCB1 expression in colon carcinoma

2020

International audience; SMARCB1 is a tumor suppressor gene, which is part of SWI/SNF complex involved in transcriptional regulation. Recently, loss of SMARCB1 expression has been reported in gastrointestinal carcinomas. Our purpose was to evaluate the incidence and prognostic value of SMARCB1 loss in colon carcinoma (CC). Patients with stage III CC (n = 1695), and a second cohort of 23 patients with poorly differentiated CC were analyzed. Immunohistochemistry for SMARCB1 was performed on tissue microarrays, and cases with loss of expression were controlled on whole sections. Loss of SMARCB1 was compared with the clinico-pathological and molecular characteristics, and the prognostic value wa…

The neural mechanisms of word order processing revisited: electrophysiological evidence from Japanese.

2008

We present two ERP studies on the processing of word order variations in Japanese, a language that is suited to shedding further light on the implications of word order freedom for neurocognitive approaches to sentence comprehension. Experiment 1 used auditory presentation and revealed that initial accusative objects elicit increased processing costs in comparison to initial subjects (in the form of a transient negativity) only when followed by a prosodic boundary. A similar effect was observed using visual presentation in Experiment 2, however only for accusative but not for dative objects. These results support a relational account of word order processing, in which the costs of comprehen…

The P600-as-P3 hypothesis revisited: single-trial analyses reveal that the late EEG positivity following linguistically deviant material is reaction …

2014

The P600, a late positive ERP component following linguistically deviant stimuli, is commonly seen as indexing structural, high-level processes, e.g. of linguistic (re)analysis. It has also been identified with the P3 (P600-as-P3 hypothesis), which is thought to reflect a systemic neuromodulator release facilitating behavioural shifts and is usually response time aligned. We investigated single-trial alignment of the P600 to response, a critical prediction of the P600-as-P3 hypothesis. Participants heard sentences containing morphosyntactic and semantic violations and responded via a button press. The elicited P600 was perfectly response aligned, while an N400 following semantic deviations …

Handgrip strength is associated with suicidal thoughts in men: Cross-sectional analyses from NHANES

2019

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between handgrip strength and suicidal thoughts in a representative sample of the US adult population using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). POPULATION AND METHODS: Data from two waves of NHANES (2011-2014) were aggregated. Handgrip strength in kilogram (kg) was defined as the maximum value from the dominant hand. Suicidal thoughts were assessed using one question "Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by the following problem: Thoughts that you would be better off dead or of hurting yourself in some way?" and dichotomized to no (not at all) and yes (several days/ more than half the days/ nea…
