Formålet med avhandlingen er å undersøke hvordan lærebøker i matematikk behandler problemløsning og algebra, avgrenset til heuristiske tilnærmingsmåter og introduksjonen av algebra. Studien består av tre deler og fokuserer på matematiske metoder og matematisk innhold i seks lærebøker brukt på ungdomstrinnet i Norge. Først undersøker jeg hvordan lærebøkene behandler ni velkjente heuristiske tilnærmingsmåter ved å studere eksemplene og deres løsningsmetoder. Deretter blir introduksjonen av algebra studert i to deler. Den første tar for seg teksten og eksemplene som forfatterne anvender, og i den andre studeres oppgavene som lærebøkene tilbyr elevene.
