SUMMARYWe applied a combined molecular and morphological approach to resolve the taxonomic status of Saccocoelium spp. parasitizing sympatric mullets (Mugilidae) in the Mediterranean. Eight morphotypes of Saccocoelium were distinguished by means of multivariate statistical analyses: 2 of Saccocoelium obesum ex Liza spp.; 4 of S. tensum ex Liza spp.; and 2 (S. cephali and Saccocoelium sp.) ex Mugil cephalus. No evidence for sequences structurally related to the RB1 gene in the human genome.

The retinoblastoma (RB1) gene is a ubiquitously expressed gene encoding a cell-cycle control protein. Inactivation of this gene plays a crucial role in the development of retinoblastoma, osteosarcoma, and other tumors. In a search for structurally related gene sequences we identified a 5.5-kb BamHI fragment strongly cross-hybridizing with the 5′ end of the RB1 cDNA. Molecular cloning, in situ hybridization, restriction mapping, and sequence analysis identified this DNA segment as the 28S rRNA gene. The absence of other cross-hybridizing sequences suggests that the RB1 gene is not part of a structurally related gene family.

Complete sequence of HSP70 cDNA from the mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis was established before quantifying its expression following moderate heat shock or injection of heat-killed bacteria. HSP70 cDNA is comprised of 2378 bp including one ORF of 654 aa, with a predicted 70 bp 5'-UTR and a 343 bp 3'-UTR (GenBank, 18 Jan 05, AY861684). Alignment identity ranged from 89% for Crassostrea ariakensis to 72% for C. virginica. Very limited information is available on epizootiology of haematozoan infections in French domestic animals. In an attempt to address this issue, prevalence of piroplasmida was studied in carnivores and ruminants, whereas prevalence of Hepatozoon spp. was only investigated in carnivores. In total, 383 animals were included in the survey (namely 116 cats, 108 dogs, 91 sheep and 68 cows). Parasite diagnosis was carried out using molecular methods such as PCR and sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene. In addition, ruminant samples were analyzed with the reverse line blotting technique (RLB). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of the Mytilus galloprovincialis lysozyme gene in different in vivo stress situations, including injection of bacteria Vibrio splendidus LGP32, Vibrio anguillarum or Micrococcus lysodeikticus, as well as heat shock at 30 C and cold stress at 5 C. In this study, we identified a total of 33 wine yeast species and strains using the restriction patterns generated from the region spanning the internal transcribed spacers (ITS 1 and 2) and the 5.8S rRNA gene. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products of this rDNA region showed a high length variation for the different species. We report the development of quantitative competitive (QC) PCR assays for quantifying the 16S, 18S ribosomal and atzC genes in nucleic acids directly extracted from soil. QC-PCR assays were standardised, calibrated and evaluated with an experimental study aiming to evaluate the impact of atrazine application on soil microflora.
