El cáncer de mama (CM) representa la quinta causa de muerte por cáncer en todo el mundo y la segunda en los países desarrollados. A cross-cultural examination of fat women’s experiences: Stigma and gender in North American and Finnish culture

In this manuscript, the voices of women of size in North America and Finland indicate that there is a shared experience of being fat. Based on cross-cultural analysis of our respective empirical findings, we argue that there is a shared Western fat lived experience that perpetuates a stigmatized gendered landscape of living with a fat body. The emergent themes tended to revolve around two similar contradictions—the phenomenon of hyper(in)visibility and a belief their fatness is a temporary or liminal state—both of which lead to an internalization of fat hatred. Facebook has recently gained popularity among young, digitally literate and predominantly urban Pakistanis. Such social networking sites allow users the freedom to express themselves using usernames, visuals and topics of their own choice. In this article, I examine how Pakistani Facebook users mobilize such resources in their identity work. Using Multimodal Discourse Analysis, I investigate how Pakistani women construct their gender identities on Facebook using visual and linguistic resources. Struggles for moral value and the reproduction of gendered and racialised hierarchies in online discussions of violence

The article examines online discussions in Finland that focus on violence committed by Finnish women, on one hand, and non-white migrant men, on the other. Drawing on the perspective of sociology of value, the article illustrates how these discussions function as sites of struggles over moral worth in a contemporary context characterised by crises of both male and white hegemony. The authors suggest that, through the discussions, these current crises are projected on migrant men and certain groups of women, who thereby become construed as morally reprehensible. Early Career Women in Academia: An Exploration of Networking Perceptions

This chapter explores women’s networking perceptions by focusing on early career women in social sciences. Within an exploratory research design it asks how early career women define the early career stage in academia, what definitions, meanings and interpretations they give for networks and networking, how they construct the networking process and their ability to establish and/or join networks, as early career researchers and as women. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastelun kohteena on maalaiskätilön työ 1900-luvun alkupuolella. Tutkielmassa kätilöitä tarkastellaan naisten koulutuksen ja palkkatyön näkökulmasta, mutta ennen kaikkea heitä tarkastellaan ammatissa toimineina naisina. Kätilön ammatti on vanhimpia ammatteja, joihin nainen on voinut Suomessa kouluttautua. Koulutus pysyi 1800-luvun alkupuolelle asti pojille määrättynä etuoikeutena. Suomalaisten kätilöiden 1700-luvun alkupuolella alkanut kouluttautuminen ja työskentely ammatissa toimivana naisena muodostivat eräänlaisen poikkeuksen, koska kätilöt toimivat ammatissaan koulutuksen saaneina, auktorisoituina ja itsenäisinä ammatinharjoittajina. The aim of this article is to look at the ways in which young European women staying in the city of Varanasi for long periods of time talk about India and how they negotiate their place and role as women there. There is a common travellers’ discourse that sees India as a difficult and dangerous place to a vulnerable traveler, and the encounters of colonial women with “otherness” have been widely analysed. Heli Valtonen tutki väitöskirjatyössään kuinka arvomaailma vaikutti tapoihin, joilla 1900-luvun alussa syntyneet toimihenkilönaiset kirjoittivat omasta elämästään 1980-luvulla. Omaelämäkertojen suuriksi teemoiksi nousivat minuuden, naiseuden, kansalaisuuden ja suomalaisuuden muotoutuminen omaelämäkerran kerronnassa.Ihminen tulkitsee omaa elämäänsä samanaikaisesti monista eri lähtökohdista. Tämä näkyy omaelämäkertojen puhetavoissa yhteisinä piirteinä ja samankaltaisina tapoina tulkita omaa elämää.
