Atrial Fibrosis Hampers Non-invasive Localization of Atrial Ectopic Foci From Multi-Electrode Signals: A 3D Simulation Study
2018
[EN] Introduction: Focal atrial tachycardia is commonly treated by radio frequency ablation with an acceptable long-term success. Although the location of ectopic foci tends to appear in specific hot-spots, they can be located virtually in any atrial region. Multi-electrode surface ECG systems allow acquiring dense body surface potential maps (BSPM) for non-invasive therapy planning of cardiac arrhythmia. However, the activation of the atria could be affected by fibrosis and therefore biomarkers based on BSPM need to take these effects into account. We aim to analyze the effect of fibrosis on a BSPM derived index, and its potential application to predict the location of ectopic foci in the …
Editorial: Hypoxia and Cardiorespiratory Control
2021
To maintain adequate oxygen levels in the body, which is essential for a healthy life, the respiratory and cardiovascular systems play vitally important roles. When the oxygen content is insufficient, i.e., when hypoxia is loaded, respiratory and cardiovascular systems respond to restore, compensate, or adapt to hypoxia, e.g., by increasing ventilation and blood flow to maintain oxygen transport to vital organs. Traditionally, it has been thought that hypoxia is detected solely by carotid and aortic bodies, i.e., by peripheral chemoreceptors, and information from the peripheral chemoreceptors is transmitted to respiratory and cardiovascular centers in the brainstem whose respiratory and car…

Estimating the two-particle $K$-matrix for multiple partial waves and decay channels from finite-volume energies
2017
An implementation of estimating the two-to-two $K$-matrix from finite-volume energies based on the L\"uscher formalism and involving a Hermitian matrix known as the "box matrix" is described. The method includes higher partial waves and multiple decay channels. Two fitting procedures for estimating the $K$-matrix parameters, which properly incorporate all statistical covariances, are discussed. Formulas and software for handling total spins up to $S=2$ and orbital angular momenta up to $L=6$ are obtained for total momenta in several directions. First tests involving $\rho$-meson decay to two pions include the $L=3$ and $L=5$ partial waves, and the contributions from these higher waves are f…

Multicenter solutions in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity
2020
We find multicenter (Majumdar-Papapetrou type) solutions of Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity coupled to electromagnetic fields governed by a Born-Infeld-like Lagrangian. We construct the general solution for an arbitrary number of centers in equilibrium and then discuss the properties of their one-particle configurations, including the existence of bounces and the regularity (geodesic completeness) of these spacetimes. Our method can be used to construct multicenter solutions in other theories of gravity.
First operation of the superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator as an energy recovery linac
2020
The superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator (S-DALINAC) has been operated as an energy recovery linac (ERL) for the first time. The S-DALINAC is a recirculating superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerator and had been upgraded with an additional recirculation beamline. It features a path length adjustment system that provides a freedom of choice of 360\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} for the rf phase difference between the electron bunches recirculated through the new beamline and the phase of the accelerating ${\mathrm{TM}}_{010}$ mode of the oscillating electromagnetic field in the SRF cavities of the accelerator. A choice of around 180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree…
Notulae to the Italian native vascular flora: 9
2020
In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of native vascular flora in Italy are presented. It includes new records, confirmations, exclusions, and status changes to the Italian administrative regions. Two new combinations are proposed. Nomenclatural and distribution updates, published elsewhere, and corrigenda are provided as Suppl. material 1.
Parametric Hull Design with Rational Bézier Curves and Estimation of Performances
2021
In this paper, a tool able to support the sailing yacht designer during the early stage of the design process has been developed. Cubic Rational Bézier curves have been selected to describe the main curves defining the hull of a sailing yacht. The adopted approach is based upon the definition of a set of parameters, say the length of waterline, the beam of the waterline, canoe body draft and some dimensionless coefficients according to the traditional way of the yacht designer. Some geometrical constraints imposed on the curves (e.g., continuity, endpoint angles, curvature) have been conceived aimed to avoid unreasonable shapes. These curves can be imported into any commercial Computer Aide…
Crossing a Multi-Lane Street: Irrelevant Cars Increase Unsafe Behavior
2011
Before crossing a road or an intersection, road users have to determine among the surrounding traffic whether or not they have enough time to safely complete their maneuver. Temporal judgments have been investigated for single cars approaching an intersection, however, close to nothing is known about how street-crossing decisions are being made when several vehicles are simultaneously approaching in two adjacent lanes. We conducted a simulator experiment in which observers indicated whether or not they had enough time to complete safe street crossing. Traffic gaps were presented either with a single or two oncoming cars on different lanes, in such a way that in all cases, only the shortest …
