Spectroscopic, crystal structural, theoretical and biological studies of phenylacetohydrazide Schiff base derivatives and their copper complexes

2020

Two phenylacetohydrazide Schiff base derivatives: N’-(1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene)-2-phenylacetohydrazide, HL1, and N’-((1-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)methylene)-2-phenylacetohydrazide, HL2, were synthesized. HL1 dimerizes in presence of HCl, probably via radical mechanism to give (2,2’-((1E)-hydrazine-1,2-diylidenebis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))diphenol (DIM). Thermal reactions of Cu(II) ions with the two Schiff base ligands resulted in formation of the binuclear complexes [(CuL1)2] and [(CuL2)2]. The stoichiometry and structures of the reported compounds were investigated by several spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The structure of the HL1 ligand and its complex [(CuL1)2] as well as the D…

CVG-ICP-OES -menetelmän käyttö elohopean analysointiin eläinkudoksesta

2015

Tässä Pro gradu –tutkielmassa käsitellään elohopean määritystä eläinkudoksesta kemiallinen höyryn muodostus induktiivisesti kytketty plasma optinen emissio spektrometria –menetelmällä (CVG-ICP-OES) ja siihen liittyvää näytteenkäsittelyä. Tutkimuksen kirjallisessa osassa käydään läpi muun muassa eri näytteenliuotusmenetelmiä, analyysimenetelmiä, tutkittavien metallien pelkistämistä CVG-ICP-OES –analyysiä varten ja CVG-ICP-OES –analyysissä esiintyviä häiriöitä. Näytteenliuotusosassa keskitytään pääasiassa tutkimuksessa käytetyn ultraäänihajotuksen esittelyyn, tämän lisäksi myös muita yleisiä näytteenliuotusmenetelmiä esitetään. Analyysimenetelmä osiossa suurin huomio keskittyy ICP-OES –laitte…

Water parameters in the 2 years before spawning of F0 (08.02.2016-06.03.2018) and during larval and juvenile phase of F1: Larval period until 17.05.2018 (48 dph, 900 dd) and 01.06.2018 (63 dph, ~900 dd) for warm and cold life condition respectively, for the juveniles until 28.09.2018 (180 dph, ~4000 dd) and 12.02.2019 (319 dph, ~5100 dd) for warm and cold conditioned fish respectively. Means ± s.e. over all replicate tanks per condition. Temperature (Temp.), pH (free scale), salinity, oxygen and total alkalinity (TA) were measured weekly in F1 and monthly in F0; sea water (SW) measurements were conducted in 2017 and 2018. Water parameters during larval and early juvenile phase of F0: Larval…

Uniqueness and reconstruction for the fractional Calder\'on problem with a single measurement

2020

We show global uniqueness in the fractional Calder\'on problem with a single measurement and with data on arbitrary, possibly disjoint subsets of the exterior. The previous work \cite{GhoshSaloUhlmann} considered the case of infinitely many measurements. The method is again based on the strong uniqueness properties for the fractional equation, this time combined with a unique continuation principle from sets of measure zero. We also give a constructive procedure for determining an unknown potential from a single exterior measurement, based on constructive versions of the unique continuation result that involve different regularization schemes.

Notes on some Late Cretaceous goniasterid starfish (Echinodermata, Asteroidea) from Belgium and Germany

2021

Both partially articulated specimens and dissociated marginal ossicles form the basis for erection of two new species of Late Cretaceous goniasterids from the Mons and Liège-Limburg basins (Belgium) and the Hannover area (Germany). Chomataster breizh sp. nov., which recalls the type species, Chomataster acules Spencer, 1913, but differs in several respects, is based on a partial external mould of the marginal frame of disc and arms in flint (upper Campanian Spiennes Chalk Formation; Mons Basin), as well as on a more or less complete individual, preserving small, spherical spines and granules and encased in a flint nodule from the upper Maastrichtian Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation; Liège…

Contesting Family in Finnish and Canadian Immigration and Refugee Policy

2012

Adopting a governmentality perspective, this article explores the multi-conceptuality of family in Finnish and Canadian immigration and refugee policy domains by analyzing official and political discourse. Contestation is found to typically manifest as conflict between Western ‘nuclear’ and non-Western ‘extended’ understandings of family. We argue that family is persistent in immigration and refugee policies of both countries because it continues to be thought of as an effective tool for biopolitical governance of national populations. A closer reading of the contestation over family also reveals competing neoliberal and neoconservative governmental rationalities situated within broader int…

Cancer Prevention with Resistant Starch in Lynch Syndrome Patients in the CAPP2-Randomized Placebo Controlled Trial : Planned 10-Year Follow-up

2022

Abstract The CAPP2 trial investigated the long-term effects of aspirin and resistant starch on cancer incidence in patients with Lynch syndrome (LS). Participants with LS were randomized double-blind to 30 g resistant starch (RS) daily or placebo for up to 4 years. We present long-term cancer outcomes based on the planned 10-year follow-up from recruitment, supplemented by National Cancer Registry data to 20 years in England, Wales, and Finland. Overall, 463 participants received RS and 455 participants received placebo. After up to 20 years follow-up, there was no difference in colorectal cancer incidence (n = 52 diagnosed with colorectal cancer among those randomized to RS against n = 53…

Aurora-A Transcriptional Silencing and Vincristine Treatment Show a Synergistic Effect in Human Tumor Cells

2008

Aurora-A is a centrosome-associated serine/threonine kinase that is overexpressed in multiple types of human tumors. Primarily, Aurora-A functions in centrosome maturation and mitotic spindle assembly. Overexpression of Aurora-A induces centrosome amplification and G 2 /M cell cycle progression. Recently, it was observed that overexpression of Aurora-A renders cells resistant to cisplatin (CDDP)-, etoposide-, and paclitaxel-induced apoptosis. Our results indicate that already in initial stages of cancer progression Aurora-A overexpression could have a major role in inducing supernumerary centrosomes and aneuploidy, as shown by immunohistochemistry on tissue sections from various stages of hu…

Underuse of long-term routine hospital follow-up care in patients with a history of breast cancer?

2011

Abstract Background After primary treatment for breast cancer, patients are recommended to use hospital follow-up care routinely. Long-term data on the utilization of this follow-up care are relatively rare. Methods Information regarding the utilization of routine hospital follow-up care was retrieved from hospital documents of 662 patients treated for breast cancer. Utilization of hospital follow-up care was defined as the use of follow-up care according to the guidelines in that period of time. Determinants of hospital follow up care were evaluated with multivariate analysis by generalized estimating equations (GEE). Results The median follow-up time was 9.0 (0.3-18.1) years. At fifth and…

The effect of experimental lead pollution on DNA methylation in a wild bird population

2021

Anthropogenic pollution is known to negatively influence an organism’s physiology, behaviour, and fitness. Epigenetic regulation, such as DNA methylation, has been hypothesized as a potential mechanism to mediate such effects, yet studies in wild species are lacking. We first investigated the effects of early-life exposure to the heavy metal lead (Pb) on DNA methylation levels in a wild population of great tits (Parus major), by experimentally exposing nestlings to Pb at environmentally relevant levels. Secondly, we compared nestling DNA methylation from a population exposed to long-term heavy metal pollution (close to a copper smelter), where birds suffer from pollution-related decrease in…
