Observation of interaction forces by investigation of the influence of eluent additives on the retention behavior of aqueous nanoparticle dispersions…

2020

The investigation and subsequent understanding of the interactions of nanomaterials with components of their surrounding media is important to be able to evaluate both potential use cases as well as potential risks for human health and for the environment. To investigate such interactions, asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) is an interesting analytical tool. This statement grounds on the fact that interactions of the analyte with the membrane and with components of the eluent are crucial for the retention behavior of the analyte within the field-flow fractionation (FFF) channel. Therefore, the investigation of the retention behavior provides an insight in the nature of the int…

Moraalisten ja esteettisten arvostelmien suhde taiteessa : katsaus kohtuullisiin teorioihin

2015

Pain modulates early sensory brain responses to task‐irrelevant emotional faces

2023

Background Pain can have a significant impact on an individual's life, as it has both cognitive and affective consequences. However, our understanding of how pain affects social cognition is limited. Previous studies have shown that pain, as an alarm stimulus, can disrupt cognitive processing when focal attention is required, but whether pain also affects task-irrelevant perceptual processing is unclear. Methods We examined the effect of laboratory-induced pain on event-related potentials (ERPs) to neutral, sad, and happy faces before, during, and after a cold pressor pain. ERPs reflecting different stages of visual processing (P1, N170, and P2) were analyzed. Results Pain decreased the P1 …

Thouless-Valatin Rotational Moment of Inertia from the Linear Response Theory

2017

Spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries of a nuclear many-body system results in appearance of zero-energy restoration modes. Such modes introduce a non-physical contributions to the physical excitations called spurious Nambu-Goldstone modes. Since they represent a special case of collective motion, they are sources of important information about the Thouless-Valatin inertia. The main purpose of this work is to study the Thouless-Valatin rotational moment of inertia as extracted from the Nambu-Goldstone restoration mode that results from the zero-frequency response to the total angular momentum operator. We examine the role and effects of the pairing correlations on the rotational cha…

Loss of density-dependence and incomplete control by dominant breeders in a territorial species with density outbreaks

2011

Abstract Background A territory as a prerequisite for breeding limits the maximum number of breeders in a given area, and thus lowers the proportion of breeders if population size increases. However, some territorially breeding animals can have dramatic density fluctuations and little is known about the change from density-dependent processes to density-independence of breeding during a population increase or an outbreak. We suggest that territoriality, breeding suppression and its break-down can be understood with an incomplete-control model, developed for social breeders and social suppression. Results We studied density dependence in an arvicoline species, the bank vole, known as a terri…

Piracy versus Netflix : Subscription Video on Demand Dissatisfaction as an Antecedent of Piracy

2018

Drawing from cognitive dissonance and neutralization theories, this study seeks to improve the understanding on consumer decision-making between the current legal and illegal video consumption alternatives. We develop and test a research model featuring Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) satisfaction and various dimensions of SVOD quality as antecedents of video piracy neutralizations and attitudes. Based on results from an online survey among Finnish SVOD users, SVOD satisfaction is primarily determined by content quality, and has a small negative effect on attitude toward piracy through decreased piracy neutralization. However, it appears that current legal services are not seen as true …

Urban Circular Metabolism as a Generator of Value and Resilient Communities. Creative Recycling of Industrial Architecture: The Case of Nordkraft (Aa…

2022

Aalborg has modified its urban metabolism to overcome the economic-industrial crisis and tackle climate change. The city, however, has not changed its DNA. Without distorting its identity as an industrial city, it has been able to respond to new and unpredictable needs through a process of architectural and urban exaptation. Nordktraft is a significant part of this regeneration process based on sustainability, both from an environmental and socio-cultural point of view, with a vision that is particularly focused on physical health and the growth of the relational life of the population. The vision that inspired the Nordkraft project is that diversity is the most powerful factor fueling resi…

Toxicological and bioactivity evaluation of blackcurrant press cake, sea buckthorn leaves and bark from Scots pine and Norway spruce extracts under a…

2021

Aqueous extracts from blackcurrant press cake (BC), Norway spruce bark (NS), Scots pine bark (SP), and sea buckthorn leaves (SB) were obtained using maceration and pressurized hot water and tested for their bioactivities. Maceration provided the extraction of higher dry matter contents, including total phenolics (TPC), anthocyanins, and condensed tannins, which also impacted higher antioxidant activity. NS and SB extracts presented the highest mean values of TPC and antioxidant activity. Individually, NS extract presented high contents of proanthocyanidins, resveratrol, and some phenolic acids. In contrast, SB contained a high concentration of ellagitannins, ellagic acid, and quercetin, exp…

Mätänevän velhon taidejulistus : intertekstuaalisen ja -figuraalisen aineiston asema Apollinairen L'enchanteur pourrissant teoksen tematiikassa ja sy…

2008

Ranskalainen modernisti Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) marssittaa esikoisteoksessaan L’Enchanteur pourrissant (1909) kuolemattoman velhon haudalle vanhentuneen Troijan Helenan. Rapistuneen kaunottaren ohella mädäntyvän tietäjän lihaa saapuvat haistelemaan mm. viehkeytensä menettäneet juoruileviksi naisiksi muuttuneet haltijattaret, höperöityneet antiikin filosofit ja Raamatun kuolemattomat pyhimykset, jotka ovat unohtaneet uskonsa merkityksen. Apollinairen luomassa groteskissa maailmassa vanha myyttinen perintö kuolee ja mätänee samalla kun maailma vajoaa dekadenttiseen rappioonsa. Riikka Mahlamäki-Kaistisen tutkima Apollinaire on yksi tärkeimmistä 1900-luvun alun ranskalaisista kirjaili…
