The concept “mathematical thinking” can be found in several studies of mathematics education, in national curricula or in media during the decades all over the world. We searched words “mathematical thinking” from the database of international scientific articles, and we found 456 707 mentions at first time. These are the main reasons why we have chosen “mathematical thinking” as the central concept of the Special Issue. The other interesting question from our point of view is how a student can express his/her mathematical thinking? Aquatic ecosystems are facing a growing number of human-induced stressors and the need to implement more biomonitoring to assess the ecological status of water bodies is eminent. This dissertation aims at providing tools to reduce the costs and improve the accuracy of freshwater benthic macroinvertebrate biomonitoring. To improve the cost-e ciency, we consider automated classi cation and develop a novel classi er suitable for complex macroinvertebrate image data. Tämä tutkielma tarkastelee nuorsuomalaisen maailmankuvan rakentumista ja ulottuvuuksia 1800-luvun viimeisinä vuosikymmeninä. Lähdeaineistona on käytetty neljää nuorsuomalaista sanomalehteä: Keski-Suomea, Savoa, Viipurin Sanomia ja Päivälehteä. Menetelmänä on ollut kriittinen diskurssianalyysi, jonka kautta on pyritty hahmottelemaan, miten nuorsuomalaiset representoivat keskustelun teemoja sekä konstruoivat omaa identiteettiään ja positiotaan suhteessa vastustajiinsa.
