Design and preparation of core-shell structured magnetic graphene oxide@MIL-101(Fe): Photocatalysis under shell to remove diazinon and atrazine pesti…
2020
Abstract A magnetically separable support with core-shell morphology comprising amine-functionalized Fe3O4 wrapped with graphene oxide (AFG) was successfully prepared and used to support MIL-101(Fe). The ternary AFG@MIL-101(Fe) composite was investigated as a photo-Fenton catalyst for the degradation of recalcitrant diazinon (DIZ) and atrazine (ATZ) pesticides. After 105 min visible light irradiation, the AFG@30MIL-101(Fe) photocatalyst achieved 100 ± 1% and 81 ± 1% photocatalytic degradation efficiency for DIZ and ATZ pollutants, respectively. The recorded data indicated superior photocatalytic ability of the nanocomposite as compared to AF@30MIL-101(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe) photocatalysts for …
Promoting active ageing through a physical exercise program aimed at reducing frailty and risk of falling among older adults
2017
Introduction: Risk of falling and frailty have been revealed as the most important conditions causing dependency among older people [1]. Older adults taking physical activity regularly can benefit of a proper maintenance of muscle strength and mass, which helps to retain function and independence, and to prevent falls and other injuries [2]. Concretely, the effectiveness of balance and strength training programs on the reduction of falls [3] and frailty [4] has been sufficiently proved.Theory/Methods: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of an intervention based on a physical exercise program addressed at 65+ people suffering from risk of falling and frailty, and ultimately aimed…
A Framework to Explain the Relation Between ICT and Development: Combining Affordances and the Capability Approach
2019
Part 1: Pushing the Boundaries - New Research Methods, Theory and Philosophy in ICT4D; International audience; In this paper, we suggest a framework to better explain the relation between ICT and development. The framework combines two theories: The Capability Approach and Affordances. The capability approach defines development as freedom of choice; and the affordances explains the relational aspects of people and technology. These two theories complement each other by connecting the means (technology) to the ends (development). A case study of ICT and study-circle education in rural areas of Kenya is used to illustrate the framework. Using the framework, the study revealed how actualizati…
Current and forthcoming perspectives in linkage to care of hepatitis C virus infection: Assessment of an Italian focus group
2019
Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a significant public health problem and is one of the major causes of chronic liver disease worldwide. In recent years many new tools to facilitate widespread HCV screening and new therapeutic options with excellent efficacy and tolerability profiles and cost lowering policies have become available. To fully utilise these new tools, the link between local and specialist centres for the management of HCV infection must be reinforced. In order to GAIN further insight into these aspects, with a particular focus on the Italian scenario, a group of experts met to discuss relevant aspects and open issues on chronic HCV. As a summary of that meeting, the fo…
Cytoprotective effect of resveratrol diastereomers in CHO-K1 cells exposed to beauvericin
2015
Beauvericin (BEA) causes cytotoxicity, lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species in CHO-K1 cells. Resveratrol (RSV) is a polyphenol with multiple biological properties, including antioxidant effects. RSV has two forms: trans and cis. The aims of this study were to determine the cytoprotective effect of trans-RSV and diastereomers mixtures (50:50 trans/cis-RSV and 70:30 trans/cis-RSV) incubated alone and in combination with BEA in ovarian (CHO-K1) cells. The results demonstrated that cell viability increases (from 9% to 77%) when they were exposed to low concentration of RSV. Moreover, when the cells were pre-treated with RSV and then exposed to BEA, a cytoprotective effect (from 25% to…
Agents of change: Women in top management and corporate environmental performance
2020
International audience; We analyze the influence of gender diversity in top management on the environmental performance of French firms. Consistent with gender socialization theory, which posits that women are raised from childhood to be more nurturing and compassionate for others, we find that firms with more women in top management exhibit higher environmental performance. This result extends those already reported in the literature regarding the effect of gender diversity at board level. We also show that women in top management are associated with several key indicators such as development of eco‐friendly products and commitment to resource reduction. Furthermore, we find that the influ…
Kernel estimation and display of a five-dimensional conditional intensity function
2018
The aim of this paper is to find a convenient and effective method of displaying some second order properties in a neighbourhood of a selected point of the process. The used techniques are based on very general high-dimensional nonparametric smoothing developed to define a more gen- eral version of the conditional intensity function introduced in earlier earthquake studies by Vere-Jones (1978). 1976) is commonly used for such a purpose in discussing the cumulative behavior of interpoint distances about an initial point. It is defined as the expected number of events falling within a given distance of the initial event, divided by the overall density (rate in 2-dimensions) of the process, sa…
MOTOR DYSFUNCTION OF THE "NON AFFECTED" LOWER LIMB: A KINEMATIC COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN HEMIPARETIC STROKE AND TOTAL KNEE PROSTHESIZED PATIENTS
2009
In patients with hemispheric stroke, abnormal motor performances are described also in the ipsilateral limbs. They may be due to a cortical reorganization in the unaffected hemisphere; moreover, also peripheral mechanisms may play a role. To explore this hypothesis, we studied motor performances in 15 patients with hemispheric stroke and in 14 patients with total knee arthroplasty, which have a reduced motility in the prosthesized leg. Using the unaffected leg, they performed five superimposed circular trajectories in a prefixed pathway on a computerized footboard, while looking at a marker on the computer screen. The average trace error was significantly different between the groups of pat…
Energy harvesting by waste acid/base neutralization via bipolar membrane reverse electrodialysis
2020
Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis (BMRED) can be used to produce electricity exploiting acid-base neutralization, thus representing a valuable route in reusing waste streams. The present work investigates the performance of a lab-scale BMRED module under several operating conditions. By feeding the stack with 1 M HCl and NaOH streams, a maximum power density of ~17 W m−2 was obtained at 100 A m−2 with a 10-triplet stack with a flow velocity of 1 cm s−1, while an energy density of ~10 kWh m−3 acid could be extracted by a complete neutralization. Parasitic currents along feed and drain manifolds significantly affected the performance of the stack when equipped with a higher number of t…
Properties of Resveratrol:In VitroandIn VivoStudies about Metabolism, Bioavailability, and Biological Effects in Animal Models and Humans
2015
Plants containing resveratrol have been used effectively in traditional medicine for over 2000 years. It can be found in some plants, fruits, and derivatives, such as red wine. Therefore, it can be administered by either consuming these natural products or intaking nutraceutical pills. Resveratrol exhibits a wide range of beneficial properties, and this may be due to its molecular structure, which endow resveratrol with the ability to bind to many biomolecules. Among these properties its activity as an anticancer agent, a platelet antiaggregation agent, and an antioxidant, as well as its antiaging, antifrailty, anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic, and so forth activities, is worth highlightin…
