Optimal control of option portfolios and applications

1999

We present an expected utility maximisation framework for optimally controlling a portfolio of options. By combining the replication approach to option pricing with ideas of the martingale approach to (stock) portfolio optimisation we arrive at an explicit solution of the option portfolio problem. Its characteristics are illustrated by some specific examples. As an application, we calculate an optimal option and consumption strategy for an investor who is obliged to hold a stock position until the time horizon.

A Simple Metaheuristic for the FleetSize and Mix Problem with TimeWindows

2017

This paper presents a powerful new single-parameter metaheuristic to solve the Fleet Size and Mix Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows. The key idea of the new metaheuristic is to perform a random number of random-sized jumps in random order through four well-known local search operators. Computational testing on the 600 large-scale benchmarks of Bräysy et al. (Expert Syst Appl 36(4):8460–8475, 2009) show that the new metaheuristic outperforms previous best approaches, finding 533 new best-known solutions. Despite the significant number of random components, it is demonstrated that the variance of the results is rather low. Moreover, the suggested metaheuristic is shown to scale almost…

Interactive multiobjective optimization with NIMBUS for decision making under uncertainty

2013

We propose an interactive method for decision making under uncertainty, where uncertainty is related to the lack of understanding about consequences of actions. Such situations are typical, for example, in design problems, where a decision maker has to make a decision about a design at a certain moment of time even though the actual consequences of this decision can be possibly seen only many years later. To overcome the difficulty of predicting future events when no probabilities of events are available, our method utilizes groupings of objectives or scenarios to capture different types of future events. Each scenario is modeled as a multiobjective optimization problem to represent differe…

Smart multi-carrier energy system: Optimised energy management and investment analysis

2016

This paper proposes an optimised Energy Management System for a multi-carrier hub, which integrates two energy distribution networks, for hydrogen and electricity. The economic sustainability of a real-life instantiation of such a system has been analysed as well. The Energy Management System has been developed by means of a multi-objective optimisation algorithm, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, implemented using MATLAB®. The achieved results consist in a series of set-points defining the working conditions of the plant for a chosen time horizon. Data provided by this process also show the effectiveness of the adopted optimisation approach. The financial analysis is performe…

Load match optimisation of a residential building case study: A cross-entropy based electricity storage sizing algorithm

2015

Abstract The EU EPBD recast regulation marked the application of the net zero energy building (Net ZEB) concept in all fields of building construction in Europe as a building able to generate as much energy as it consumes over a selected time frame. A more detailed insight is however needed, as even if a building achieves a long-term energy balance between energy generated and consumed, smaller time scales must also be considered. For example, from the utility’s point of view, if a Net ZEB is a heavy consumer in the winter, it will appear to be quite similar to a conventional building, requiring the use of additional generation. The increase in the generation-load match means reducing the s…

The fuzzy p-median problem

2004

In many location models, the strong crisp assumptions, like known demands and distances, are not realistic in most cases. The fuzzy p-median problem relaxes this hypothesis giving to the decision maker a necessary degree of freedom to solve real-world problems. It allows a decision maker to improve an optimal covering of a location problem by considering partially feasible solutions in which some demand is left uncovered. Here we revise the main facts and results about this problem emphasising different specific algorithms of resolution. Finally we show that this fuzzy version can be used to analyse the global structure of a given instance of the crisp problem.

The multiple vehicle pickup and delivery problem with LIFO constraints

2015

Abstract This paper approaches a pickup and delivery problem with multiple vehicles in which LIFO conditions are imposed when performing loading and unloading operations and the route durations cannot exceed a given limit. We propose two mixed integer formulations of this problem and a heuristic procedure that uses tabu search in a multi-start framework. The first formulation is a compact one, that is, the number of variables and constraints is polynomial in the number of requests, while the second one contains an exponential number of constraints and is used as the basis of a branch-and-cut algorithm. The performances of the proposed solution methods are evaluated through an extensive comp…

MCR-ALS on metabolic networks: Obtaining more meaningful pathways

2015

[EN] With the aim of understanding the flux distributions across a metabolic network, i.e. within living cells, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been proposed to obtain a set of orthogonal components (pathways) capturing most of the variance in the flux data. The problems with this method are (i) that no additional information can be included in the model, and (ii) that orthogonality imposes a hard constraint, not always reasonably. To overcome these drawbacks, here we propose to use a more flexible approach such as Multivariate Curve Resolution-Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) to obtain this set of biological pathways through the network. By using this method, different constraint…
