Two major findings relating to the breeding system of Senecio vernalis from Israel are reported. First, isolation experiments failed to confirm the existence of a widespread, truly self-compatible and predominantly self-pollinating breeding system in Israeli populations of S. vernalis. However, a single S. vernalis plant derived from a natural stand at Jerusalem was found to be self- compatible and strongly self-pollinating. In its progeny, there were signs of inbreeding depression commonly associated with selfed offspring of outbreeding species. Abstract The present study describes for the first time the isolation of Vibrio furnissii strains from a European eel culture system which are pathogenic for eels ( Anguilla anguilla ) (LD 50 dose, 10 6 cfu/fish). Biochemical characterization of the isolates was performed by API 20E system and by classical numerical taxonomy. Growth at 4 °C, and with 6–8% (w/v) NaCl in a broth medium were necessary to differentiate Vibrio furnissii from Aeromonas species when the API 20E system was used. In this work we analyzed the pathogenic in vivo and in vitro activities for both fish and mammals of extracellular products (ECP) of several isolates of Vibrio damsela implicated in disease problems in marine culture. The ECP from all the strains were strongly lethal for fish (LD50 ranging from 0.06 to 3.7 μg protein/g fish) and mice (LD50 ranging from 0.02 to 0.43 μg protein/g mouse), causing death between 4 and 72 h after inoculation. These ECP samples possessed low proteolytic activity without production of caseinase, gelatinase, or elastase. Neo-clerodane diterpenoids from Conyza pyrrhopappa Sch.Bip. ex A.Rich

Two hitherto unknown neo-clerodane-type diterpenoids along with twelve known compounds have been isolated from Conyza pyrrhopappa Sch.Bip. ex A.Rich, a medicinal plant traditionally used across tropical Africa to relieve fever. The structures of isolates have been elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic techniques. The crude extract and the isolated compounds were evaluated in the Hela-S3 cell line and in a panel of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) at concentrations up to 50 µg/mL. Composition of the essential oil ofPallenis spinosa (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae)

The essential oil of Pallenis spinosa (L.) Cass. was obtained by hydrodistillation. In total 38 components were identified by GC and GC–MS. Oxygenated sesquiterpenoids amounted to 60.2% of the oil. The main components were germacra-1(10),5-dien-3,4-diol (18.4%), α-cadinol (14.1%), 3-acetoxygermacra-1(10),5-dien-4-ol (13.0%), T-cadinol (8.2%) and δ-cadinene (5.8%). Abstract Aromatic ginger or kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) rhizomes are ground as a spice or pickled for consumption in south-east Asian cuisines; although widely used, until recently it has been less studied chemically than white and red ginger. Hydro-distillate extracts have identified several compounds that exhibit anticancer activity against select tumor cell lines in vitro, and most recently chemical analyses have focused on rhizome metabolites present in organic extracts. Essential oil composition ofArtemisia parvi?ora aerial parts

The chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of A. parviflora was analysed by GC and GC–MS. Twenty-two compounds, accounting for 72.7% of the oil, were identified. The main components identified were β-caryophyllene (15.3%), germacrene D (14.7%), camphor (11.4%), artemisia ketone (7.8%), 1,8-cineole (5.8%), α-copaene (2.6%), artemisia alcohol (2.6%), terpinene-4-ol (2.3%), caryophyllene oxide (1.2%), α-pinene (1.1%), sabinyl acetate (1.1%) and α-humulene (1.1%). Clinopodium raimondoi (Lamiaceae), a new species from Sicily

On the basis of the taxonomic study of the collections made by F. M. Raimondo, kept in PAL, a new species of Clinopodium is described. The new taxon, named Clinopodium raimondoi, occurs in N-W coast of Sicily on limestone substrata, in steppe communities dominated by Hyparrhenia hirta. The main distinctive characteristics of C. raimondoi, with respect to other taxa known from Europe and other Mediterranean countries, are the large size, the opposite and decussate branches, and the clearly woody at base stems of mature plants as well. Relationships of the new taxon with the Mediterranean ones in the C. nepeta group are also discussed.

Aims: A numerical taxonomic study of halophilic Vibrio isolated from healthy and brown ring disease (BRD) affected manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum), harvested from the Atlantic coast of south-western Spain, was performed. Methods and Results: Characterization of 123 presumptive Vibrio spp. was carried out using 94 phenotypic tests. Simple matching and Jaccard similarity coefficients were used for numerical analysis. Cluster analysis by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages yielded 15 phena defined at 0.81 similarity.
