Perceptual interactions between fruity and woody notes of wine
2004
The quantitative olfactory interactions in three binary mixtures of wine aroma compounds were studied. For the first two mixtures, whisky lactone (woody note) was mixed separately with two esters (fruity note), ethyl butyrate and isoamyl acetate. For the third mixture, guaiacol (woody note) was mixed with ethyl butyrate (fruity note). Perceived odour intensity of 24 stimuli (four supra-threshold concentration levels of two compounds and the respective 16 mixtures) were evaluated in five replications, by a trained panel of 13 subjects. The results showed that for the three binary mixtures studied, quantitative perceptual interactions were non-level independent, non-symmetrical, and reached t…
Interaction of Charged Amino-Acid Side Chains with Ions: An Optimization Strategy for Classical Force Fields
2014
Many well-established classical biomolecular force fields, fitted on the solvation properties of single ions, do not necessarily describe all the details of ion pairing accurately, especially for complex polyatomic ions. Depending on the target application, it might not be sufficient to reproduce the thermodynamics of ion pairing, but it may also be necessary to correctly capture structural details, such as the coordination mode. In this work, we analyzed how classical force fields can be optimized to yield a realistic description of these different aspects of ion pairing. Given the prominent role of the interactions of negatively charged amino-acid side chains and divalent cations in many …
Rapid odorant release in mammalian odour binding proteins facilitates their temporal coupling to odorant signals.
2010
; We have measured the effect of rat odorant-binding protein 1 on the rates of ligand uptake and liquid-to-air transfer rates with a set of defined odorous compounds. Comparison of observed rate constants (k(obs)) with data simulated over a wide range of different kinetic and thermodynamic regimes shows that the data do not agree with the previously held view of a slow off-rate regime (k(off) <0.0004 s(-1)). We propose that a rapid koff would be a necessary requirement for such a system, since slow odorant-release rates would result in significant decorrelation between the olfactory world and odour perception. Fermentation Products of Commensal Bacteria Alter Enterocyte Lipid Metabolism
2020
eferred to byJia Wen, John F. RawlsFeeling the Burn: Intestinal Epithelial Cells Modify Their Lipid Metabolism in Response to Bacterial Fermentation ProductsCell Host & Microbe, Volume 27, Issue 3, 11 March 2020, Pages 314-316; International audience; Despite the recognized capacity of the gut microbiota to regulate intestinal lipid metabolism, the role of specific commensal species remains undefined. Here, we aimed to understand the bacterial effectors and molecular mechanisms by which Lactobacillus paracasei and Escherichia coli regulate lipid metabolism in enterocytes. We show that L-lactate produced by L. paracasei inhibits chylomicron secretion from enterocytes and promotes lipid stora…

Achievement of thermotolerance through hsps phosphorylation in sea urchin embryos.
1995
TPA treatment of sea urchin embryos is able to induce thermotolerance. Evidence is provided that TPA treatment induces phosphorylation of a constitutive stress protein of 38 KDa.
Apoptosis in sea urchin embryos.
1997
Abstract It is demonstrated by DNA electrophoresis analysis, morphological observations and TdT in situ reaction, that Paracentrotus embryos if treated with TPA plus heat undergo an apoptotic reaction. Indication is also obtained that non treated embryos undergo spontaneous apoptosis at the early pluteus stage, expecially in the districts of arms and intestine. The possible meaning of this latter observation is discussed.
In Vitro Antioxidant Activity and In Vivo Topical Efficacy of Lipid Nanoparticles Co-Loading Idebenone and Tocopheryl Acetate
2019
Idebenone (IDE) is a strong antioxidant that has been proposed for the treatment of skin disorders, including skin ageing. Unfavorable physico-chemical properties make IDE a poor skin permeant where effectiveness could be improved by its loading into suitable delivery systems such as solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC). In this work, we designed novel IDE-loaded NLC containing tocopheryl acetate (VitE) as a liquid component to obtain a synergic effect between IDE and VitE. The resulting NLC showed small particle sizes (24&ndash
X-Ray structure, Hirshfeld analysis and DFT studies of two new hits of triazolyl-indole bearing alkylsulfanyl moieties
2021
Two new hits of triazolyl-indole containing two different alkylsulfanyl analogues named tert-butyl 2-((4-amino-5-(1H-indol-2-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)thio)acetate 2, and ethyl 2-((4-amino-5-(1H-indol-2-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)thio)acetate 3 were synthesized via reaction of 4-amino-5-(1H-indol-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazol-3(2H)-thione 1 with tert-butyl bromoacetate and ethyl chloroacetate in the presence of base (Et3N). The molecular structure of 2, and 3 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and 1H/13C- NMR spectroscopic techniques. In compound 2, the molecular packing depends on significant O...H (9.3%), N...H (12.4%) and S...H (3.1%) as well as relatively weak C...H (14.1%), S...C (…
Strength of cellulosic fiber/starch acetate composites with variable fiber and plasticizer content
2014
In this experimental study, the performance of injection-molded short flax and hemp fibers in plasticized starch acetate were analyzed in terms of strength. Parameters involved in the analysis are a variable fiber and plasticizer content. The measured strength of the composites varies in the range of 12–51 MPa for flax fibers and 11–42 MPa for hemp fibers, which is significantly higher than the properties of the unreinforced starch acetate matrix. The micro-structural parameters used in modeling of composite strength were obtained from optical observations and indirect measurements. Some of these parameters were qualitatively verified by X-ray microtomography.
