Neuromuscular junction disassembly and muscle fatigue in mice lacking neurotrophin-4

Neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) is produced by slow muscle fibers in an activity-dependent manner and promotes growth and remodeling of adult motorneuron innervation. However, both muscle fibers and motor neurons express NT-4 receptors, suggesting bidirectional NT-4 signaling at the neuromuscular junction. Mice lacking NT-4 displayed enlarged and fragmented neuromuscular junctions with disassembled postsynaptic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) clusters, reduced AChR binding, and acetylcholinesterase activity. Abstract We studied if the levels of copper released from antifouling treated nets used in finfish mariculture could affect the immune defense mechanism and/or induce oxidative stress in Dicentrarchus labrax , after short term exposure in laboratory experiments. Dissolved copper concentration released from the treated nets, copper bioavailability and a set of biomarkers responses were measured. Biomarkers included hemoglobin concentration, activities of lysozyme, total complement, respiratory burst, glutathione S-transferase and acetycholinesterase and concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Chemistry and functional properties in prevention of neurodegenerative disorders of five Cistus species essential oils.

The chemical composition of Cistus creticus, Cistus salvifolius, Cistus libanotis, Cistus monspeliensis and Cistus villosus essential oils has been examined by GC and GC–MS analysis. Height-nine constituents were identified in C. salvifolius oil, sixty in C. creticus, fifty-six in C. libanotis, fifty-four in C. villosus, forty-five in C. monspeliensis. Although the five species belong to the same genus, the composition showed interesting differences. [EN] Two OFF-ON fluorescent chemodosimeters based on a BODIPY core for the detection of nerve agent mimics have been synthesized. Their reactivity towards diethylcyanophosphonate (DCNP) and diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) has been tested in organic and aqueous phase. These chemodosimeters selectively detect the nerve agent mimics with good LODs. The chemodosimeters hold their sensing properties on solid supports, allowing the preparation of a hand held sensing kit. The sensing in solid-liquid phase has been demonstrated. The X-ray structure of compound 2 has been resolved.

Mildronate improves cognition and reduces amyloid-β pathology in transgenic Alzheimer's disease mice

Mildronate, a carnitine congener drug, previously has been shown to provide neuroprotection in an azidothymidine-induced mouse model of neurotoxicity and in a Parkinson's disease rat model. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of mildronate treatment on cognition and pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) model mice (APP(SweDI)). Mildronate was administered i.p. daily at 50 or 100 mg/kg for 28 days. Thiobencarb-Induced Changes in Acetylcholinesterase Activity of the Fish Anguilla anguilla

Abstract European eels (Anguilla anguilla) were exposed to sublethal thiobencarb concentrations in a continuous flow-through system for 4 days. Brain, muscle, and gill acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities were evaluated after 2, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h herbicide exposure. Thiobencarb induced significant inhibitory effects on the total and specific AChE activity of A. anguilla, ranging from >30–40% inhibition in eel brain and gills to >50% inhibition in muscle tissue 2 h after the initial exposure.
