Enabling independent navigation for visually impaired people through a wearable vision-based feedback system
2017
This work introduces a wearable system to provide situational awareness for blind and visually impaired people. The system includes a camera, an embedded computer and a haptic device to provide feedback when an obstacle is detected. The system uses techniques from computer vision and motion planning to (1) identify walkable space; (2) plan step-by-step a safe motion trajectory in the space, and (3) recognize and locate certain types of objects, for example the location of an empty chair. These descriptions are communicated to the person wearing the device through vibrations. We present results from user studies with low- and high-level tasks, including walking through a maze without collisi…
CAD-Based Training of an Expert System and a Hidden Markov Model for Obstacle Detection in an Industrial Robot Environment
2012
Abstract Deploying industrial robots in harsh outdoor environments require additional functionalities not currently provided. For instance, movement of standard industrial robots are pre-programmed to avoid collision. In dynamic and less structured environments, however, the need for online detection and avoidance of unmodelled objects arises. This paper focus on online obstacle detection using a laser sensor by proposing three different approaches, namely a CAD-based Expert System (ES) and two probabilistic methods based on a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) which requires observation based training. In addition, this paper contributes by providing a comparison between the CAD-based ES and the tw…
Local path planning in a complex environment for self-driving car
2014
This paper introduces an local path planning algorithm for the self-driving car in a complex environment. The proposed algorithm is composed of three parts: the novel path representation, the collision detection and the path modification using a voronoi cell. The novel path representation provides convenience for checking the collision and modifying the path and continuous control input for steering wheel rather than way point navigation. The proposed algorithm were applied to the self-driving car, EureCar(KAIST) and its applicability and feasibility of real time use were validated.
ACL Rehabilitation Enhanced by 3D Modeling Software
2010
The main purpose of this paper is to show possible positive effect of 3D modeling application in rehabilitation. Authors provide clinic example of patient with ACL reconstruction. The patient has undertaken the therapy consisting of regular rehabilitation sessions as well as those enhanced by 3D rehabilitation application. The improvement in ACL rehabilitation was significant and worth further exploration.

Les spectacles à Antioche d’après Libanios
2008
The subject of my contribution might seem very wide. I intend, in fact, to develop it in two main directions: the theatrical shows and those of the circus. If Antioch people’s entertainment reaches its peak in the Olympic Games and Syriarch’s spectacles, more common ones were provided by theatrical shows and chariot-races. I shall study the part of these ordinary spectacles in Antioch people’s life, beginning with generalities on the already well-known world of actors, mimes and pantomimes, without lingering however, in order to move on to what I would like to focus: the circus world, the equestrian competitions which took place in the hippodrome, and the exaltation which they aroused. Abou…
The Globalization of Fear
2017
In this chapter, we combine the advances of other disciplines to expand our understanding of terrorism and the fields of emotions. In this respect, as L. Howie puts it, the media industry engendered a culture of witnessing which not only is conducive to terrorism, but enlarged fear to other continents. The globalization of fear operates in a new field which is based on what Baudrillard named ‘the spectacle of disaster’. Though this vicious circle between the spectatorship of disaster and terrorism not to be broken, the problem is far from being solved. Terrorism and 9/11 as founding event ignited a new stage of capitalism which Korstanje called ‘Thana-Capitalism’. Unlike modern sociologist …
