Melodic and Rhythmic Contrasts in Emotional Speech and Music
2013
Many cues convey emotion similarly in speech and music. Researchers have established that acoustic cues such as pitch height, tempo, and intensity carry important emotional information in both domains. In this investigation, we examined the emotional significance of melodic and rhythmic contrasts between successive syllables or tones in speech and music, referred to as Melodic Interval Variability (MIV) and the normalized Pairwise Variability Index (nPVI). The spoken stimuli were 96 tokens expressing the emotions of irritation, fear, happiness, sadness, tenderness and no emotion. The music stimuli were 96 phrases, played with or without performance expression and composed with the intention…

Auditory cortical and hippocampal local-field potentials to frequency deviant tones in urethane-anesthetized rats: An unexpected role of the sound fr…
2015
The human brain can automatically detect auditory changes, as indexed by the mismatch negativity of event-related potentials. The mechanisms that underlie this response are poorly understood. We recorded primary auditory cortical and hippocampal (dentate gyrus, CA1) local-field potentials to serial tones in urethane-anesthetized rats. In an oddball condition, a rare (deviant) tone (p = 0.11) randomly replaced a repeated (standard) tone. The deviant tone was either lower (2200, 2700, 3200, 3700 Hz) or higher (4300, 4800, 5300, 5800 Hz) in frequency than the standard tone (4000 Hz). In an equiprobability control condition, all nine tones were presented at random (p = 0.11). Differential respo…
Biological responses to high-frequency sound in a freshwater crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus
2023
Anthropogenic noise is recognised as an important environmental stressor that can have longterm negative consequences on species. In recent years, there has been increasing attention to the potential negative impact of noise pollution on species, with great concern for the importance of impacts on aquatic animal life. This study examined the effects of acoustic stress on the biochemical parameters of the freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus. The experiment was conducted in a tank equipped with an audio and video recording system using ten groups (five control and five test) of three adult crayfish (30 animals in total). The animals in the test group were exposed to acoustic signals [a…
Geostatistical computing of acoustic maps in the presence of barriers
2009
Acoustic maps are the main diagnostic tools used by authorities for addressing the growing problem of urban acoustic contamination. Geostatistics models phenomena with spatial variation, but restricted to homogeneous prediction regions. The presence of barriers such as buildings introduces discontinuities in prediction areas. In this paper we investigate how to incorporate information of a geographical nature into the process of geostatistical prediction. In addition, we study the use of a Cost-Based distance to quantify the correlation between locations.
Prediction of hydraulic and acoustic properties of open-graded mixes
2014
The use of open-graded mixes increases significantly the hydraulic permeability of pavement and contributes to reduce the noise impact in comparison to traditional pavement. Such characteristics are very appealing and would greatly increase driver's safety. However, during service life, the pores tend to be clogged by many factors among them secondary traffic compaction and filling of voids by fine materials are relevant, especially on heavy routes. In this case the noise reduction and drainage capabilities will gradually disappear, causing serious problems for road safety and maintenance. In this paper we propose a simulation approach in order to predict the drainage and acoustic behavior …
Motility and acoustic signals of the decapod Cherax destructor
2021
The present study examined for the first time the sound production and motility of the freshwater decapod crustacean Cherax destructor. An acoustic and video system was used to monitor the behavior of 10 individual (5 males and 5 females) in an experimental tank. Video data were used to analyze three motility variables (velocity, distance moved, and angular velocity). Acoustic data were analyzed to obtain abundance and these acoustic parameters: duration, 1st and 2nd peak frequency, sound pressure level (SPL) and the bandwidth. Both males and females produced short-duration pulses that could be grouped into three categories, high, medium, and low frequency. Males showed a higher rate of emi…

Coupled Surface Acoustic Wave Cavities
2020
