Influence of Rotor Suspension Anisotropy on Oil Film Instability

2018

A crucial problem of turbomachinery is the oil film instability on increasing the angular speed, which is correlated with the asymmetry of the bearing stiffness matrix and resembles the hysteretic instability somehow. As a beneficial effect is exerted on the latter by the anisotropy of the support stiffness, some favorable effects have been recently found by the author also for the former, whence a systematic analysis has been undertaken. The instability thresholds may be detected by the usual conventional methods, but a detailed analysis may be carried out by closed-form procedures in the hypothesis of symmetry of the rotor-shaft-support system, which condition approaches the real working …

Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors for the Detection of Hazardous Compounds in Indoor Air

2017

Presented at the Eurosensors 2017 Conference, Paris, France, 3–6 September 2017.; International audience; In this work, the authors show the capabilities of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices coupled with various absorbents to probe the properties of gas sensitive materials for the manufacturing of hazardous gas sensors. The great capabilities of cobalt corroles for the trapping of carbon monoxide (CO) were exploited to produce selective sensors. These corroles were deposited on SAW delay lines surfaces and then exposed to carbon monoxide (CO) in standard conditions. Concentrations of a few hundreds of ppb were measured emphasizing the interest of such sensors for the detection of CO. Anot…

Deposition and characterization of cold sprayed nanocrystalline NiTi

2011

International audience; Binary 50Ni–50Ti mixture was prepared by mechanical alloying from elemental powders. After 48 h of milling, the nanocrystalline B2-NiTi powder was produced. Then, this as-milled powder was deposited by cold spraying in order to produce a target which can be used to create thin films by magnetron sputtering technique. The objective is to improve the electrical characterizations of the NiTi/SiO2/Si M.O.S structures. Themorphology evolution of the powder particles, the phase identification and the alloying evolution process as function of milling time were studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, th…

An automated procedure for computing the packing properties of dense and locked sands by image analysis of thin sections

2014

The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of dense sands originates to a great extent from their microstructural characteristics such as the coordination number, the grain contact and the packing density indexes. The study of intergranular contacts and the reckoning of these indexes may be carried out on planar images of the grains either by means of time-consuming visual inspection assisted by CAD or by automatic image analysis. An innovative method for the automatic determination of microstructural characteristics of sands based on image analysis of thin section is proposed. Tests performed on a locked sand show that the proposed method is much more effective, convenient and faster than the us…

Detection and quantification of lung cancer biomarkers by a micro-analytical device using a single metal oxide-based gas sensor

2018

International audience; The analysis of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) related to lung cancer is a very promising wayin medical diagnosis because it is non-invasive and much less expensive than traditional medical analysisused so far. In that sense, a silicon micro-analytical platform consisting of a micro-preconcentrator cou-pled to a silicon spiral gas chromatographic micro-column was built, and a metal oxide-based gas sensorwas used as a miniaturized gas detector. This micro-fabricated device was successfully tested to selec-tively detect low concentrations of VOCs considered as lung cancer biomarkers, within a few minuteseven in presence of high concentrations of water vapor …

Stochastic resonance in a metal-oxide memristive device

2021

Abstract The stochastic resonance phenomenon has been studied experimentally and theoretically for a state-of-art metal-oxide memristive device based on yttria-stabilized zirconium dioxide and tantalum pentoxide, which exhibits bipolar filamentary resistive switching of anionic type. The effect of white Gaussian noise superimposed on the sub-threshold sinusoidal driving signal is analyzed through the time series statistics of the resistive switching parameters, the spectral response to a periodic perturbation and the signal-to-noise ratio at the output of the nonlinear system. The stabilized resistive switching and the increased memristance response are revealed in the observed regularities…

Dual boundary element model of 3D piezoelectric smart structures

2017

In this paper, the application of the dual boundary element method (DBEM) in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM) is explored. The model involves a 3D host structure, which is formulated by the DBEM in the Laplace domain, and 3D piezoelectric transducers, whose finite element model is derived from the electro-mechanical behaviour of piezoelectricity. The piezoelectric transducers and the host structure are coupled together via BEM variables. The practicability of this method in active sensing applications is demonstrated through comparisons with established FEM and parametric studies.

Elastoplastic Damaging Model for Adhesive Anchor Systems. II: Numerical and Experimental Validation

2011

This paper presents the numerical and experimental validation of the analytical elastoplastic damaging model proposed in the companion paper (Part I). The validation was carried out by describing the pullout failure of epoxy adhesive anchors. Pullout tests were simulated numerically and performed experimentally. Several specimens made of a rebar embedded in a hardened concrete cylinder by means of polyester resin were tested. Conventional strain gauges and acoustic emission (AE) sensors were used to evaluate the structural response of the system and to monitor the onset and progression of structural damage, respectively. The parametric analysis and the moment tensor analysis of the AE data …

On the possibility of synthesizing multilayered coatings in the (Ti,Al)N system by RGPP: A microstructural study

2019

International audience; Radiofrequency magnetron sputtering combined with reactive gas pulsing process was used to synthesize two titanium aluminum nitride multilayer films using a periodically controlled nitrogen flow rate changing from 0.4 to 1 sccm (sample S04-1) and from 0 to 1 sccm (sample S0-1). A metallic TiAl buffer layer was deposited on the etched substrates before the deposition to enhance their adhesion. The films were characterized using mainly transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The role of the crystallinity of the buffer TiAl metallic layer deposited before gas introduction on the growth orientations is emphasized. It is shown that the formation of a mu…
