AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a metabolic master switch expressed in a great number of cells and tissues. AMPK is thought to modulate the cellular response to different stresses that increase cellular AMP concentration. The adenosine analog, 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-β-D-ribofuranoside (AICAR) is an AMPK activator used in many studies to assess the effects of AMPK activation on cellular metabolism and function. Determination of kinetic parameters of redox reactions using CE‐ICP‐MS: A case study for the reduction of Np(V) by hydroxylamine hydrochloride

The rate constants k of the reduction of 5 × 10-5  M Np(V) to Np(IV) by hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HAHCl) in 1 M HCl have been determined by CE-ICP-MS in the temperature range of ϑ = 30-70°C and with varying concentrations of HAHCl from 1 to 7.2 M. The reaction was found to have (pseudo)first order kinetics with respect to HAHCl. The experimental results for k ranged from 0.0029(1) min-1 (ϑ = 40°C, c(HAHCl) = 3 M) to 0.039(7) min-1 (ϑ = 60°C, c(HAHCl) = 7.2 M). The activation energy of the reaction was determined as EA  = (72 ± 10) kJ/mol. There is now increasing evidence that hyperresponsiveness towards intestinal flora is a crucial event in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In support of this hypothesis, we recently described in humans that tolerance exists towards indigenous intestinal flora but is broken in active IBD lesions. Synthesis of the aggregation pheromone of the Colorado potato beetle from its degradation product

Incubation of the Colorado potato beetle aggregation pheromone, (S)-1,3-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethyl-6-octen-2-one, with antennal or leg extracts from this beetle gave 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one as the major product. This ketone was used as a substrate in a stereoselective synthesis of the pheromone. It was attached to the butanediacetal of glycolic acid with good stereoselectivity and the desired isomer was further enriched by purification of the product of this reaction on silica gel.

Combined complete C5 and partial C4 deficiency in humans: clinical consequences and complement-mediated functions in vitro.

A family is described with two siblings who suffered at different times from a single episode of meningococcal meningitis by Neisseria meningitidis groups B and C, respectively. In the two subjects, hemolytically active fifth component of complement (C5) was not detectable and antigenic C5 was less than 0.05% and less than 0.7% of normal, respectively. Repletion of sera by purified human C5 (70 micrograms/ml) restored total complement hemolytic activities. The asymptomatic first degree family members had C5 levels compatible with a heterozygous state of C5 deficiency. The purpose of this work is the synthesis of complexes containing imine-functionalized protic NHC ligands in order to further develop synthetic methodologies giving access to pNHC, C-bound ‘anionic’ imidazolide, and homo- and heterodinuclear complexes. In the case of imidazoles without functional group, deprotonation with n-butyl lithium afforded (1-aryl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)lithium in good yield.
