A population-based study of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage-II and -III colon cancers.

2010

Summary Background Although clinical trials have demonstrated that adjuvant chemotherapy improves survival for stage-III colon cancer, the benefits remain controversial for stage-II lesions. The objective of the present study was to determine the extent to which adjuvant chemotherapy is used for patients with stage-II and -III colon cancers. Methods The study population comprised 1074 patients with stage-II and -III colon cancers diagnosed in 2000 in 12 French administrative districts and recorded in population-based cancer registries. Data were collected using a standardized procedure. Results Overall, 20.4% of patients with stage II and 61.9% with stage III received adjuvant chemotherapy.…

Histomorphological tumor regression grading of esophageal carcinoma after neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy: which score to use?

2006

Histopathological tumor regression grade (TRG) has been shown to be a prognostic factor in patients with esophageal cancer after neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy (RCT). The system introduced by Mandard to group TRG (Cancer 1994;73:2680-2686) has been used to analyse and discuss its prognostic significance on survival in a single institution retrospective analysis: TRG 1 (complete regression) - TRG 5 (absence of regressive changes). Sixty patients with locally advanced (T3/4 or N1) adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma received cisplatin-based RCT. Three to four weeks later operation for curative intent was performed. Median follow-up was 17.7 months. Histopathological tumor stages were sta…

Gemcitabine and oxaliplatin combination chemotherapy in advanced biliary tract cancers

2006

Background Biliary tract cancers are uncommon tumors with a poor prognosis and most patients present with invasive and inoperable disease at diagnosis. Chemotherapy represents a palliative treatment, with poor response rates and a median survival of less than 6 months. Oxaliplatin and gemcitabine have shown an interesting activity as single agents in this group of patients. Patients and methods We carried out a multicenter phase II study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combined oxaliplatin and gemcitabine in locally advanced and metastatic biliary tract carcinoma. The schedule of chemotherapy included oxaliplatin 100 mg/m2 on day 1 and gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8, every 21…

Acute and late toxicity and preliminary outcomes report of moderately hypofractionated helical tomotherapy for localized prostate cancer: a mono-inst…

2019

Aims: To assess toxicity and clinical outcomes of moderately hypofractionated helical tomotherapy (HT) for the curative treatment of localized prostate cancer (PC). Methods: From December 2012 to May 2018, 170 patients were treated with definitive intent for PC. Thirty-four percent were low risk, 30% intermediate risk (IR) and 36% high risk (HR). All patients received 70 Gy in 28 fractions to the prostate; 61.6 Gy were delivered to the seminal vesicles for IR; pelvic lymph nodes irradiation for a total dose of 50.4 Gy was added in the HR subgroup. Toxicity was assessed using CTCAE V4.0, and biochemical failure was defined following Phoenix criteria. Time-to-event data were analyzed using th…

Biological aggressiveness evaluation in prostate carcinomas: immunohistochemical analysis of PCNA and p53 in a series of Gleason 6 (3+3) adenocarcino…

2003

We selected 63 prostate tumors with Gleason's grade 6 (3+3), commonly showing both tubular and cribrous patterns. We compared in both patterns the expression of two of the most used biologic markers: PCNA and p53, with the aim to verify the validity of the Gleason's grading system to compare the morphologic grade with biologic aggressiveness and prognostic value. We did not find any statistical difference in the protein immunopositivity, indicating that both patterns could have identical biologic behaviour; then we confirmed the validity of Gleason's system for considering both tubular and cribrous patterns as an intermediate grade of tumoral differentiation. Moreover, we found a linear rel…

Therapy of Peritoneal Murine Cancer with Biological Response Modifiers

1985

We have used a murine renal adenocarcinoma of spontaneous origin (Renca) inplanted in the peritoneal cavity to study the therapeutic potential of biological response modifiers (BRMs) used alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy. This tumor model is therapeutically challenging since following intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection, the tumor grows progressively with hemorrhagic ascites, abdominal metastases to lymph nodes, liver, spleen, most serous membranes, and, in some animals, metastases to extra-abdominal sites (lungs). In the absence of therapy, death invariably occurs within 36 +/- 2 days. The tumor is efficiently lysed in 4 hours by peritoneal cells isolated from mice treated with BRMs.…

Urachal Signet-ring Cell Carcinoma, A Rare Variant of Vesical Adenocarcinoma: Incidence And Pathologicalcriteria

1978

Abstract Of 715 cases of vesical tumors reviewed 18 adenocarcinomas were selected for further study, 5 of which fulfilled all criteria of urachal origin. Herein is reported 1 rare case of such a carcinoma of the signet-ring cell type and the morphological criteria of this variant are discussed briefly. After undergoing radical cystectomy and ureterosigmoidostomy the patient has been free of recurrent tumor or metastasis for 6 years.

Analysis of tissue and circulating microRNA expression during metaplastic transformation of the esophagus

2016

Genetic changes involved in the metaplastic progression from squamous esophageal mucosa toward Barrett's metaplasia and adenocarcinoma are almost unknown. Several evidences suggest that some miRNAs are differentially expressed in Barrett's esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Among these, miR-143, miR-145, miR-194, miR-203, miR-205, miR-215 appear to have a key role in metaplasia and neoplastic progression. The aim of this study was to analyze deregulated miRNAs in serum and esophageal mucosal tissue biopsies to identify new biomarkers that could be associated with different stages of esophageal disease. Esophageal mucosal tissue biopsies and blood samples were collected and analyz…

Interactive computerized morphometric analysis for the differential diagnosis between dysplasia and well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the prostate

1989

To distinguish prostatic dysplasia (or adenosis) from well differentiated adenocarcinoma on transrectal needle biopsy, a morphometric study was conducted on 20 cases of adenosis and 20 cases of well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the prostate. About 100 cells for each patient were analyzed by means of a computerized image analyzer, and mean nuclear diameter, mean nuclear area, mean form factor and number of cells in eight classes of nuclear diameter were studied. The best predictors of malignancy (evaluated by means of Receiver Operating Characteristics curves) were mean nuclear area greater than 28 mu2, presence of more than 5% of cells with nuclear diameter greater than 6.15 mu, and mea…
