Are referral centers for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer compliant to EAU guidelines? A report from the vesical antiblastic therapy Italian study
2011
Introduction: Adherence to international guidelines is viewed as a prerequisite for optimal medical care delivery. Previously reported surveys for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) employed mailed questionnaires to urologists or patients resulting in conflicting degrees of agreement with existing guidelines. In the current study, contemporary information on the management of NMIBC was generated from a sample of Italian centers. Patients and Methods: Eight Italian referral centers for the treatment of NMIBC were asked to collect information relative to all consecutive patients with a histology-proven NMIBC undergoing a transurethral resection fr…
Beclomethasone dipropionate in Crohn's ileitis: A randomised, double-blind trial.
2011
Abstract Background Steroids, the mainstay of Crohn's disease treatment, have been associated with systemic side effects. Aim To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of beclomethasone dipropionate for maintaining remission induced by a short course of systemic steroids in patients with Crohn's ileitis with or without right colonic involvement. Methods Patients (n = 84) with active Crohn's disease who achieved remission during a 2-week prednisone run-in period were randomised to receive beclomethasone dipropionate for 24 weeks or continue prednisone for a further 2 weeks followed by placebo for 22 weeks. The primary outcome was relapse rate (Crohn's Disease Activity Index score > 150 and a…
A short message service (SMS)-based strategy for enhancing adherence to antipsychotic medication in schizophrenia
2012
Abstract Background The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a short message service (SMS)-based strategy on adherence to antipsychotic treatment. Methods A multicentre, randomised, open-label, controlled, 6-month study with clinically stabilised outpatients with schizophrenia was conducted. The patients assigned to the intervention received daily SMS reminders to take their medication for 3 months. Self-reported medication adherence was determined using the Morisky Green Adherence Questionnaire (MAQ). Secondary outcomes were severity of illness, attitude towards medication, insight into illness and health-related quality of life. Results A total of 254 patients were analysed. A si…
Does the Compliance to Intravesical BCG Differ between Common Clinical Practice and International Multicentric Trials?
2015
Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the reasons for intravesical BCG interruption in clinical practice. BCG for at least one year is advocated as the best regimen to treat high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, almost 50% of patients don't complete it. Toxicity accounts for 10% of dropouts in international trials. Materials and Methods: Patients with T1HG NMIBC undergoing 1-year BCG were enrolled in this study. BCG was administered for one year. Toxicity and causes of treatment interruption were recorded. Results: A total of 411 patients we…
Medication adherence in schizophrenia: The role of insight, therapeutic alliance and perceived trauma associated with psychiatric care
2017
Medication non adherence in schizophrenia is a major cause of relapse and hospitalization and remains for clinicians an important challenge. This study investigates the associations between insight, therapeutic alliance, perceived trauma related to psychiatric treatment and medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia. In this multicenter study, 72 patients were assessed regarding symptomatology, self-reported adherence with medication, insight, medication side-effects, therapeutic alliance and perceived trauma related to psychiatric treatment. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test predicted paths among these variables. The data fit a model in which medication adherence…
Patient-Reported Nonadherence with Glaucoma Therapy
2019
Abstract Purpose: Effective glaucoma therapy relies to a great extent on the patients' ability to regularly self-administer eye drops. This study aimed to assess self-reported nonadherence and to identify potential barriers to adherence in glaucoma patients. Methods: Participants completed a 16-item questionnaire, designed to examine nonadherence rate and assess the therapy experience. Inclusion criteria stipulated treatment duration of at least 1 year. Nonadherence was defined as missing ≥5% of the prescribed pressure-lowering eye drops doses. Results: In total, 201 glaucoma patients aged 24–88 years were included. Mean treatment duration was 9.4 years. Nonadherence was reported by 30.3% o…
Prescription patterns and appropriateness of NSAID therapy according to gastrointestinal risk and cardiovascular history in patients with diagnoses o…
2011
Abstract Background Prescription of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be based on the assessment of both gastrointestinal (GI) and cardiovascular (CV) risk for the individual patient. We aimed to assess the GI/CV risk profile and the pharmacological management of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) in clinical practice. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, multicentre, observational study of consecutive OA patients that visited 1,760 doctors throughout the Spanish National Health System (NHS) in a single day. The presence of GI risk factors, CV histories, hypertension and current pharmacological treatments was recorded. Results Of the 60,868 patients, 17,105 had a diagn…
Retrospective, observational, multicentre study on an Italian population affected by chronic hepatitis C who failed to clear HCV-RNA after the combin…
2010
There is a lack of information on the characteristics of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) who fail to respond to antiviral treatment. We studied HCV-positive subjects with chronic liver diseases treated with pegylated-interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) who failed to clear HCV in routine clinical practice. A total of 2150 consecutive adult patients treated with PEG-IFN plus RBV therapy in 46 Italian centres between 1 July 2004, and 30 June 2005, were studied. Of the 2150 patients, 923 (42.9%) (M/F 585/335, mean age 54.8 years) failed to achieve a serum HCV-RNA clearance. Of these 923 patients, 429 (46.5%) were nonresponders, 298 (32.3%) relapsers, 168 (18.2%) dro…
Development of a Food-Based Diet Quality Score from a Short FFQ and Associations with Obesity Measures, Eating Styles and Nutrient Intakes in Finnish…
2019
We constructed a food-based diet quality score (DQS) and examined its association with obesity measures, eating styles and nutrient intakes. Participants were 3592 individuals (764 dizygotic [DZ] and 430 monozygotic [MZ] twin pairs) from the FinnTwin16 study. The DQS (0&ndash
Knowledge and attitudes of parents after the implementation of mandatory vaccination in kindergartens of Palermo, Italy.
2020
Background and aim of the work: Even though vaccination is easy to access in Europe, it has been facing several outbreaks caused by vaccine preventable diseases. Trying to balance the right to health of the community with individual self-determination, in Italy was mandate vaccination for ten vaccine preventable diseases in 2017. The project “Sportello Vaccinale” provided a counseling service to parents in kindergarten of Palermo. The main objective of the study was to investigate knowledge and compliance on vaccination by children’s parents after the implementation of mandatory vaccination. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among parents accessing to the “Sportello Vaccinale” …
