Resistance training status modifies inflammatory response to explosive and hypertrophic resistance exercise bouts.

2017

The purpose of the present study was to examine the immediate and prolonged immune response in circulating cytokine and adipocytokine concentrations after two different resistance exercise bouts: hypertrophic (HYP1, 5 × 10, 80% of 1RM) and maximal explosive (POW1, 10 × 5, 60% of 1RM) resistance exercise bouts and how 12 weeks of resistance training (RT) modifies these responses (HYP2, POW2). Eight men completed the study. RE-induced interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), monocyte-chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), leptin, resistin, and adiponectin were measured before (PRE) and immediately (POST0), 24 (POST24) and 48 (POST48) hours after RE…

Chronic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorβ/δ agonist GW0742 prevents hypertension, vascular inflammatory and oxidative status, and endotheli…

2015

Endothelial dysfunction plays a key role in obesity-induced risk of cardiovascular disease. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of chronic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)β/δ agonist GW0742 treatment on endothelial function in obese mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD).Five-week-old male mice were allocated to one of the following groups: control, control-treated (GW0742, 3 mg/kg per day, by oral gavage), HFD, HFD + GW0742, HFD + GSK0660 (1 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneal) or HFD-GW0742-GSK0660 and followed for 11 or 13 weeks. GW0742 administration to mice fed HFD prevented the gain of body weight, heart and kidney hypertrophy, and fat accumulation. The increase in …

Adiponectin, resistin and leptin in paediatric chronic renal failure: Correlation with auxological and endocrine profiles

2013

Introduction: Chronic renal failure (CRF) compromises nutrition, growth, puberty, glycometabolic homeostasis, and adipokine secretion (i.e. adiponectin, resistin, and leptin). Adipokines play a role in the clinical outcome, but data in paediatric patients is scant. Aim: To evaluate the link between kidney function, adiponectin, resistin, leptin, hormonal status, nutritional state and late outcome of CRF children. Materials and methods: We studied leptin, adiponectin and resistin levels in 31 CRF patients (19 males, 12 females, aged 12.1 ± 4.47 years) managed conservatively, and 30 healthy age- and gender-matched controls. Clinical, auxological, biochemical, hormonal data, glucose and insuli…

Phenotyping of type 2 diabetes mellitus at onset on the basis of fasting incretin tone: Results of a two-step cluster analysis.

2015

Aims/Introduction According to some authors, in type 2 diabetes there is a reduced postprandial action of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). However, little is known about the role of fasting incretins in glucose homeostasis. Our aim was to evaluate, through a two-step cluster analysis, the possibility of phenotyping patients with type 2 diabetes at onset on the basis of fasting GLP-1, GIP and ghrelin. Materials and Methods A total of 96 patients with type 2 diabetes within 6 months of onset (mean age 62.40 ± 6.36 years) were cross-sectionally studied. Clinical, anthropometric and metabolic parameters were evaluated. At fasting the follow…

Altered adipose tissue metabolism in offspring of dietary obese rat dams.

2011

To investigate further the mechanisms of developmental programming, we analysed the effects of maternal overnutrition and of postnatal high-fat feeding on adipose tissue metabolism in the offspring. Postnatal changes in serum adiponectin, leptin and TAG [triacylglycerol (triglyceride)] levels, adipose tissue TAGs, fatty acids and enzyme activities were determined in offspring of cafeteria-diet-fed dams during gestation and lactation, weaned on to standard chow or on to cafeteria diet. Obese rats showed higher adiposity (+35% to 85%) as well as a significant increase in serum glucose, insulin, leptin, adiponectin and TAG levels (P<0.01) and adipose tissue LPL (lipoprotein lipase) and …

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Cardiovascular Risk, and Carotid Inflammation.

2015

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined by excessive triglycerides (TGs) accumulation in the liver (>5% of hepatocytes histologically) in the absence of alcohol excess. The NAFLD ranges from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. The NAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are now the number one cause of liver disease in Western countries. The prevalence of NAFLD is increasing but is underreported, and the epidemiology and demographic characteristics vary worldwide. The prevalence is increasing because of the rising occurrence of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM); in fact, NAFLD is considered as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Nonalcoho…

The Role of the Heme Oxygenase System in the Metabolic Syndrome

2014

Molecular chaperones and the heat shock response play a major role in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis under various pathological conditions. In particular, their role is to regulate protein conformation, protect proteins from misfolding and aggregation, and maintain signalling and organellarnetworks. Among variousheat shock proteins, Hsp32 also known as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), has demonstrated an important role in metabolic syndrome. In particular, the HO system seems to play a major role in the complex pathophysiological cascade involved in insulin resistance mechanisms, and adipocyte functions as measured by the release of important adipokynes. The aim of the present review is to…

The Mediating Role of Endocrine Factors in the Positive Relationship Between Fat Mass and Bone Mineral Content in Children Aged 9-11 Years: The Physi…

2022

IntroductionWe aimed to investigate whether the relationship between fat mass and bone mineral content (BMC) is mediated by insulin, leptin, adiponectin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, testosterone and estradiol in children aged 9-11 years.Materials and MethodsWe utilised cross-sectional data from the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children study (n = 230 to 396; 112 to 203 girls). Fat mass and BMC were assessed with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Endocrine factors were assessed from fasted blood samples. We applied the novel 4-way decomposition method to analyse associations between fat mass, endocrine factors, and BMC.ResultsFat mass was positively associated with BMC in girls (ß…

Effects of modulation of body fat in production of adiponectin in mice : consequences on hepatic metabolism of lipids

2010

Adiponectin (ApN), a 30-kDa adipokine abundantly produced by adipose tissue has been described for the first time in 1995. Early findings demonstrating serum adiponectin levels are inversely correlated with obesity initiated intense investigation of the relationship between adiponectin and all symptoms of the metabolic syndrome. Of these studies, strong evidence suggests that a weight loss induced by medication or hypocaloric diet led to increased circulating ApN levels and improvement of biochemical parameters. Thus, high levels of ApN have been correlated with an improvement of insulin sensitivity and lipid parameters reducing cardiovascular risk. However mechanisms involved in the improv…
