Preventing occupational injury among police officers: does motivation matter?

Background: Injury prevention is an important issue for police officers, but the effectiveness of prevention initiatives is dependent on officers’ motivation toward, and adherence to, recommended health and safety guidelines. The purpose of this article is to analyze the self-translation strategies, together with the manipulation and persuasion policies present in the column “30 Días en Madrid/30 Giorni a Madrid” of the journal Legiones y Falanges/Legioni e Falangi. This column, written by the critic Masoliver relating briefly the political events of the time, represents a sample of how, in those times, translation – as intersemiotic processes – could be considered an ideal expression of a linguistic ideology, as well as an expression of the desire to build a national identity.

This study builds on previous research on ageing representation in relation to common assumptions and stereotypes (Schneider & Ingram 1993; Holladay & Coombs 2004, Kaid & Garner 2004), in order to provide an overview of the ways in which older adults have been addressed and exploited in US political (i.e. electoral) campaigns. Considering campaign ads as multimodal texts, Kress & van Leeuwen’s social semiotic approach (2001) is used to examine how multimodal elements convey seniors’ images.
