What makes the difference : PIAAC as a resource for understanding the problem-solving skills of Europe's higher-education adults

The ever-evolving technological landscape is challenging adults' problem-solving skills. The central goal of higher education (HE) is to guarantee a high level of know-how, which is in line with the changing demands of technology at work and in everyday life. This study builds on European data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) to understand adults' (N = 53,407) skills for solving problems in technology-rich environments. Finnish adult students’ perspectives on short-cycle study programmes : motives and evaluations

We investigated how students in Finland perceive short-cycle higher education programmes. In line with the European trend, Finland has piloted short-cycle study programmes in order to attract adult students into higher education. We found that the students were mainly satisfied with their studies, and that their orientations to studies and learning were extrinsic in nature. Opettajat aikuisten maahanmuuttajien perustaitoja kehittämässä

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan, miten aikuisten maahanmuuttajaopiskelijoiden opettajat ymmärtävät perustaidot ja opiskelutaidot sekä miten he pedagogisoivat perustaitojen opetusta arvioinnin avulla. Perustaitoja ovat luku- ja kirjoitustaidot, numeeriset taidot ja ongelmanratkaisutaidot teknologisesti kehittyneissä ympäristöissä. This qualitative metasynthesis investigated students’ meaningful learning experiences amid andragogical teacher education programmes. The programmes catered to the specific learning needs of adult students in the context of university-based teacher education. A life time in exile : Finnish war children in Sweden after the war : an interview study with a psychological and psychodynamic approach

This study is based upon in-depth interviews with ten Finnish war children who were evacuated to Sweden during the Second World War (1939 -1944) and who did not return permanently to Finland after the war. This interpretative and qualitative interview study of war children seems to be the only one of its kind. The interviews were carried out in 2007 in Stockholm. At the time of the evacuation nine of the children were between two and five years of age and one was seven years old. At the time of the interviews they were approaching their seventieth birthday. Muscle-tendon morphomechanical properties of non-surgically treated Achilles tendon 1-year post-rupture

These alterations may affect the function of tendon in force transmission and in energy storage and recovery.
