Predictors of quality of life of cancer patients, their children, and partners

2014

Objective The objective of this study is to assess the quality of life (QOL) of cancer patients and their family members over 1-year period post therapy. Methods We evaluated QOL in cancer patients (N = 161) (Short Form-8 Health Survey (SF-8), European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer 30- Item Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30)), their partners (N = 110) (SF-8), and their children (N = 115) (KIDSCREEN-27) using a longitudinal design (t1: post therapy, t2: 6 months after t1, t3: 12 months after t1). Multiple regression models were employed to examine factors related to QOL. Results After cancer therapy, impairments in the patients' QOL were found primarily in…

Challenges in the Transition from In-Patient to Out-Patient Treatment in Depression

2020

Background Few data are available on the characteristics of inpatient treatment and subsequent outpatient treatment for depression in Germany. In this study, we aimed to characterize the inpatient and outpatient treatment phases, to determine the rates of readmission and mortality, and to identify risk factors. Methods We carried out a descriptive statistical analysis of routine administrative data from a large health-insurance carrier (BARMER). All insurees aged 18 to 65 who were treated in 2015 as inpatients on a psychiatry and psychotherapy service or on a psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy service with a main diagnosis of depression were included in the analysis. Risk factors for …

Enhancing Older Adults’ Digital Inclusion Through Social Support : A Qualitative Interview Study

2022

AbstractA lack of social support can hinder older adults’ digital inclusion. This chapter examines the connection between social and digital inclusion by focusing on the process of acquiring social support for digital technology use among older adults in Finland. Building on the concept of warm expert, the chapter shows that acquiring support for digital technology use is a reciprocal process that both enhances and requires digital inclusion. A qualitative analysis of 22 participant-induced elicitation interviews was conducted with older adults aged between 57 and 89. The chapter shows that social support reinforces digital inclusion by (a) ensuring older adults’ access to technology, (b) c…

Attitudes towards globalization, life satisfaction, and fear of covid-19 infection. Comparison of emerging and older adults

2022

Attitudes toward globalization are shaped by people’s direct experience with it. The COVID-19 pandemic can arguably be understood as a negative manifestation of globalization. The purpose of this study was to examine whether fear of COVID-19 infection and life satisfaction could be predictors of attitudes toward globalization. The study was crosssectional in nature and utilized intergroup comparison analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. Emerging adults (n = 157) and seniors (n = 119) were compared. Higher levels of accepting attitudes toward globalization were observed among the emerging adults, while a fear of contracting COVID-19 was found to be higher among seniors. In both stud…

Yhteisövoimainen oppimisprosessi : substantiivinen teoria aikuisten ryhmässä oppimisen kokemuksista

2018

The aim of this study was to build a conception as well as a substantive theory of adult learners’ group learning. The framework for this study is andragogy, which places the life context of adult learners at the center of the learning process (Knowles 1990). This study has been carried out using grounded theory as a research methodology. Hermeneutics offers a broad scientific paradigm for the understanding of group learning as a phenomenon, whereas grounded theory offers a concrete tool for analyzing data and developing a substantive theory. In this approach, the theory emerges gradually in open interaction between a researcher and the data (Glaser 1992). The informants for this study were…

The use of mobile technology for online shopping and entertainment among older adults in Finland

2017

Older adults use mobile devices for online shopping as often as younger adults.Mobile-based entertainment use is most typical for younger male adults.Older female adults use mobile-based entertainment least frequently.Age, household structure and high education predict mobile-based online shopping.Mobile-based entertainment use is best predicted by age and gender. Older adults are becoming an important market segment for all internet-based services, but few studies to date have considered older adults as online shoppers and users of entertainment media. Utilising the concept of life course, this article investigates the use of mobile technologies for online shopping and entertainment among …

Intra-individual variability in TSH levels of healthy women during the first half of pregnancy

2017

TSH is the parameter most widely accepted to assess thyroid function, especially in pregnant women. The aim of this current study was to analyze intra-individual changes in TSH during the first half of pregnancy in women with TSH levels higher than 2.5mIU/L in early pregnancy. An observational, prospective study was conducted on 243 healthy pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy. Thyroid function was assessed by testing TSH and free T4 levels. A subgroup of women with TSH levels2.5mIU/L underwent additional tests (TSH, free T4, peroxidase antibodies). Information on dietary iodine intake and/or iodine supplements was also recorded.Mean TSH level was 1.89mIU/L (range 0.024-6.48mIU…

Inflammation and impaired endothelium-dependant vasodilatation in non obese women with gestational diabetes mellitus: preliminary results

2013

International audience; BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether abnormal endothelial function, a common finding in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) pregnancies, can be explained by inflammatory cytokines. METHODS: Forearm skin blood flow (FSBF), into response to acetylcholine (Ach) (endothelium-dependent vasodilatation), were measured in 24 pregnant control subjects and 28 gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) women, in the third trimester of gestation. A fasting glycemic and lipidic panel was obtained, and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha and IL-6) and adiponectin were also determined. RESULTS: FSBF is significantly reduced in GDM group compared with control subjects (344.59 +/- 57.791 vs.176.38…

Systematic review: the presenting international normalised ratio (INR) as a predictor of outcome in patients with upper nonvariceal gastrointestinal …

2011

Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2011; 33: 1010–1018 Summary Background  The prognostic value of an elevated international normalised ratio (INR) as part of initial risk stratification in nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) remains poorly characterised. Aim  To assess the usefulness of the initial INR in patients with NVUGIB. Method  After a systematic review, we included the presenting INR and other validated prognosticators in multivariable models predicting rebleeding and mortality. Data are reported as odd ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results  Only two of 769 candidate studies were useful, but reported disparate, highly selected NVUGIB patients with varying threshold init…
