Development of certified environmental management in hospital and outpatient haemodialysis units
2015
Familial hypercholesterolæmia in children and adolescents: Gaining decades of life by optimizing detection and treatment
2015
Contains fulltext : 155263.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common genetic cause of premature coronary heart disease (CHD). Globally, one baby is born with FH every minute. If diagnosed and treated early in childhood, individuals with FH can have normal life expectancy. This consensus paper aims to improve awareness of the need for early detection and management of FH children. Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed either on phenotypic criteria, i.e. an elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level plus a family history of elevated LDL-C, premature coronary artery disease and/or genetic diagnosis, or positive genetic testin…
Hematopoietins: New Tools in the Treatment of Hematopoietic Insufficiency
1993
The number of circulating blood cells and their function are regulated by a variety of peptide hormones, the so-called hematopoietic growth factors (HGFs) or hematopoietins. In a complex regulatory network of stimulating and inhibiting peptide hormones [1], the number of circulating blood cells is kept at a physiological level. Because many of these blood cells have a relatively short half-life, the bone marrow is in a state of constant active proliferation in order to produce the necessary blood cells. For instance, granulocytes are made at a rate of 5 × 107–10 × 107 cells/s. It is unclear whether additional, hematopoietin-independent regulatory mechanisms exist, which might be responsible…
High Expression of Cannabinoid Receptor 2 on Cytokine-Induced Killer Cells and Multiple Myeloma Cells
2020
Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by aberrant bone marrow plasma cell (PC) proliferation and is one of the most common hematological malignancies. The potential effect of cannabinoids on the immune system and hematological malignancies has been poorly characterized. Cannabidiol (CBD) may be used to treat various diseases. CBD is known to exert immunomodulatory effects through the activation of cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), which is expressed in high levels in the hematopoietic system. Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are a heterogeneous population of polyclonal T lymphocytes obtained via ex vivo sequential incubation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with interferon-&gam…
Bronchial microbiome of severe COPD patients colonised by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
2014
The bronchial microbiome in severe COPD during stability and exacerbation in patients chronically colonised by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), has not been defined. Our objective was to determine the characteristics of the bronchial microbiome of severe COPD patients colonised and not colonised by P. aeruginosa and its changes during exacerbation. COPD patients with severe disease and frequent exacerbations were categorised according to chronic colonisation by P. aeruginosa. Sputum samples were obtained in stability and exacerbation, cultured, and analysed by 16S rRNA gene amplification and pyrosequencing. Sixteen patients were included, 5 of them showing chronic colonisation by P. aeruginosa.…
Analysis of microbiota in stable patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
2014
To identify the bacterial diversity (microbiota) in expectorated sputum, a pyrosequencing method that investigates complex microbial communities of expectorated sputum was done in 19 stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients (mean (SD) FEV1: 47 (18%) of predicted value). Using conventional culture, 3 phyla and 20 bacterial genera were identified, whereas the pyrosequencing approach detected 9 phyla and 43 genera (p < 0.001). In sputum the prevalent genera with pyrosequencing approach were Streptococcus, Actinomyces, Neisseria, Haemophilus, Rothia, Fusobacterium, Gemella, Granulicatella, Porphyromonas, Prevotella and Veillonella. Enterobacteriaceae, detected frequently in convent…
Isolation and identification of new anthraquinones from Rhamnus alaternus L and evaluation of their free radical scavenging activity
2018
From the butanolic and the ethyl acetate extracts of Rhamnus alaternus L root bark and leaves, three new anthraquinone glycosides, alaternosides A-C (1,4,6,8 tetrahydroxy-3 methyl anthraquinone 1-O-ß-D-glucopyranosyl-4,6-di-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (1); 1,2,6,8 tetrahydroxy-3 methyl anthraquinone 8-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (2) and 1, 6 dihydroxy-3 methyl 6 [2′-Me (heptoxy)] anthraquinone (3)) were isolated and elucidated together with the two known anthraquinone glycosides, Physcion-8-O-rutinoside (4) and emodin-6-O-α-L-rhamnoside (5) as well as with the known kaempferol-7-methylether (6), β-sitosterol (7) and β-sitosterol-3-O-glycoside (8). Their chemical structures were elucidated using spectr…

Laying the foundations for gene therapy in Italy for patients with haemophilia A: A Delphi consensus study
2022
IntroductionCurrent treatment for haemophilia A involves factor VIII replacement or non-replacement (emicizumab) therapies, neither of which permanently normalise factor VIII levels. Gene therapy using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors is an emerging long-term treatment strategy for people with severe haemophilia A (PwSHA) that is likely to be available for clinical use in the near future. AimThis article proposes practical guidelines for the assessment, treatment, and follow-up of potential PwSHA candidates for AAV-based gene therapy. MethodUsing the Delphi method, a working group of Italian stakeholders with expertise in and knowledge of the care of adults with haemophilia A analysed l…
Geographical Distribution of Cardiovascular Mortality in Comunidad Valenciana (Spain)
2002
Comunidad Valenciana is one of the seventeen autonomous regions into which Spain is divided. It is located on the east coast of Spain, next to the Mediterranean sea, with an area of 23,255 km2 and with 4,009,329 inhabitants in 1996. From an administrative point of view there are three levels of aggregation: provinces (3 units), health areas (20 units) and municipalities (541 units).
