Liver haemangiomas undetermined at grey-scale ultrasound: contrast-enhancement patterns with SonoVue and pulse-inversion US.

2005

The objective of this study was to describe the spectrum of contrast-enhancement patterns of hepatic haemangiomas undetermined at grey-scale ultrasound (US) on SonoVue-enhanced pulse-inversion (PI) US. Twenty patients (11 women, nine men) with 35 haemangiomas (size range: 1-7 cm; mean: 3.1 cm) undetermined at baseline US underwent PI at low M.I. (0.05-0.08) after i.v. injection of SonoVue. All haemangiomas were confirmed by typical helical computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. US examinations were videotaped and then reviewed by two experienced radiologists blinded to the final diagnosis. Readers evaluated by consensus the baseline echogenicity and the d…

Ex vivo expansion of umbilical cord blood (UCB) CD34+ cells alters the expression and function of α4β1 and α5β1 integrins

2001

We have investigated the influence of ex vivo expansion of human CD34+ cord blood cells on the expression and function of adhesion molecules involved in the homing and engraftment of haematopoietic progenitors. Ex vivo expansion of umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells for 6 d in the presence of interleukin 3 (IL-3), IL-6 and stem cell factor (SCF) or IL-11, SCF and Flt-3L resulted in increased expression of α4, α5, β1, αΜM and β2 integrins. However, a significant decrease in the adhesion of progenitor cells to fibronectin was observed after the ex vivo culture (adhesion of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming units (CFU-GM) was 22 ± 4% in fresh cells versus 5 ± 2% and 2 ± 2% in each combinatio…

EPCR Signaling Controls the Activity of Hematopoietic Stem Cells Independent of Coagulation Regulation

2021

Abstract Background All mature blood cells are derived from multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) which are activated to meet the demand of the host during inflammation and injury. The endothelial cell protein C receptor (EPCR) is a marker for primitivity and quiescence of HSCs but the relative contributions of EPCR signaling versus anticoagulant functions in HSC maintenance are incompletely defined. Aims We aimed to dissect functions of EPCR by studying anticoagulant and signaling function in HSC of EPCR C/S mice carrying a single intracellular point mutation abolishing normal trafficking of EPCR through endo-lysosomal compartments. We assessed the contributions of EPCR signaling to …

Haemophagocytic syndrome and rickettsial diseases. A new case and systematic review of the literature

2011

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a rare but potentially fatal disease resulting from dysregulated activation and proliferation of lymphocytes. We present a case of haemophagocytic syndrome occurring in a 5-year-old Italian boy as a complication of Mediterranean spotted fever. The characteristics of this case have been analysed and contextualized among those of another 15 cases of haemophagocytic syndrome associated with rickettsial diseases found through a systematic review of the international literature.

Haemophagocytic syndrome in rheumatic patients. A systematic review

2012

BACKGROUND: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), is a potentially fatal hyperinflammatory syndrome characterized fever, hepatosplenomegaly, and cytopenias. HLH can be either primary, with a genetic aetiology, or secondary, associated with malignancies, autoimmune diseases, or infections. Among rheumatic disorders, HLH occurs most frequently in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. AIM: To draw attention on this severe syndrome that may often go undiagnosed in patient with rheumatic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed search was performed by combining the terms (haemophagocytic, haemophagocytosis, hemophagocytosis, hemophagocytic, erythrophagocytosis, macrophage activation syndrom…

L’efficacia del trinitrato di glicerina allo 0,2% per uso topico nel ridurre il dolore post- emorroidectomia e favorire la guarigione delle ferite

2005

The aim of the study was to evaluate whether topical application of 0.2% glyceryl trinitrate ointment could reduce post-haemorrhoidectomy healing time and pain both at rest and during defecation. Thirty patients with grade III and IV haemorrhoids were included in the study and divided into two groups. All patients underwent Milligan-Morgan haemorrhoidectomy, and anorectal manometry was performed before surgery and after 5 and 30 days. In one group a placebo ointment was applied to the perianal wounds, while in the other group a 0.2% glyceryl trinitrate ointment was used. Maximum resting pressure was reduced in the glyceryl trinitrate group and increased in the placebo group after 5 days. Po…

Non-Thermal Ultrasonic Extraction of Polyphenolic Compounds from Red Wine Lees

2020

This study presents the results of conventional aqueous (CE) and non-conventional ultrasound-assisted (UAE) extractions of polyphenolic compounds from lees extracts of red wine varieties (Merlot and Vranac). The effect of ultrasound extraction time (t, s), and amplitude (A,%) from a 400 W ultrasound processor with different ultrasonic probes diameters (Ds, mm) on the amount and profile of polyphenolic compounds in the obtained extracts was investigated and compared to CE. The optimal conditions resulting in maximum extraction of phenolic compounds were: Probe diameter of 22 mm, amplitude 90% and extraction time for Vranac wine lees 1500 s and for Merlot wine lees extraction time of 1361 s. …
