Hematopoietic Peripheral Circulating Blood Stem Cells As an Independent Marker of Good Transfusion Management in Patients with Beta-Thalassemia

2015

Abstract Aim Aim of the current study was to prospectively evaluate the potential role of peripheral circulating CD34+ stem cells as new independent marker of appropriate hemopoietic balance in patients with thalassemia major and intermedia. Materials and methods Peripheral blood samples from patients with thalassemia major (TM) and intermedia (TI) were drawn. Peripheral circulating CD34+ stem cells, CF-GEMM, CFU-GM and BFU-GM were assayed with monoclonal antibodies for CD34 and clonogenic tests, according to standard procedures and ISHAGE method (BD stem cell enumeration kit, Becton Dickinson; H4434, Stem Cell Technology). Demographic and clinical data were recorded from each enrolled subj…

<title>Follow-up in patients with subdural haematomas using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)</title>

1998

Secondary haemorrhage is an important cause of brain injury following initial therapy of subdural haematoma (SDH). Early identification and treatment of secondary haemorrhage improves neurologic outcome. Near infrared light at a wavelength of 760 nm shows a high absorption for haemoglobin. The difference in absorbance of light ((Delta) OD) at the wavelength of 760 nm between both hemispheres is measured to detect SDH. We have prospectively studied 20 patients with the CT diagnosis of SDH using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Unilateral subdural haematomas were detected by NIRS in 15 out of 16 patients. Bilateral SDH were detected in 2 out of 3 patients. The median of (Delta) OD was reduc…

Safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment for carotid artery stenoses using proximal protection systems : 30-day follow-up

2017

Introduction. Although surgical endarterectomy remains the treatment of choice for carotid artery stenosis, carotid artery stenting (CAS) with use of proximal protection systems (PPS) plays an important role as alternative treatment modality, especially in high risk patients. This study was aimed at the assessment of safety of CAS with use of the PPS and also at identification of risk factors associated with this procedure. Material and methods. This was a post hoc analysis, with 30-day follow-up. We analysed results of treatment of 94 patients who underwent 97 CAS with PPS, 47 such procedures in asymptomatic, and 50 in symptomatic individuals. Results. There were 0 strokes during 30-day fo…

The value of total thyroidectomy as the definitive treatment for Graves’ disease: A single centre experience of 594 cases

2019

Highlights • Total thyroidectomy is a safe and effective treatment for Graves’ disease. • It is associated with a very low incidence rate of post-operative complications. • Total thyroidectomy offers a rapid and definitive control of hyperthyroidism and its related symptoms.

Protective effects of plasma replacement fluids on erythrocytes exposed to mechanical stress

2000

Haemoglobin release from 40 suspensions of packed red blood cells in modified fluid gelatin, 4% albumin solution, 6% hydroxyethyl starch and normal saline was investigated in vitro during circulation with a roller pump from a heart-lung machine for 120 min at a flow rate of 2.5 l.min-1 at room temperature. The lowest haemoglobin release was obtained with erythrocytes in modified fluid gelatin, whereas free haemoglobin concentrations became progressively higher with albumin, hydroxyethyl starch and normal saline [median free haemoglobin (interquartile range) after 120 min circulation: gelatin 493 (360-601) mg.l-1, albumin 692 (590-1111) mg.l-1, hydroxyethyl starch 1121 (692-1518) mg.l-1, nor…

Polypeptides controlling hematopoietic cell development and activation. I. In vitro results.

1989

Recombinant DNA technology has been central in answering some of the most relevant questions in the research of regulation of the functional status of hematopoietic progenitor cells and their progeny. This leading article will focus on recent results that have emerged from studies utilizing recombinant molecules that control hematopoietic blood cell development and activation. The following features will be detailed: The molecular and biological characteristics and biochemistry of hematopoietic growth factors, synergizing factors and releasing factors, their role in the regulation of hematopoiesis and activation of normal and leukemic cells, their cellular sources, and regulation of product…

Polypeptides controlling hematopoietic blood cell development and activation

1989

Colony-stimulating factors (CSFs) have entered the clinical arena. Several investigators have explored, in first clinical phase I studies, different routes of administration to define the optimum biological dose, maximum tolerated dose, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics of these reagents. It has been demonstrated that recombinant human (rh) granulocyte-macrophage CSF (GM-CSF) and granulocyte CSF (G-CSF) can be safely administered over a broad dose range to increase number of circulating granulocytes in man. More recently, GM-CSF and G-CSF have been involved in phase Ib/II studies to assess the granulopoietic responses of patients with granulocytopenia due to various underlying disease states i…
