Aesthetics of Geometry and the Problem of Representation in Monument Sculpture
2017
Since the 1920s and 1930s, constructivist and concretist visual art movements have stressed geometric forms, proportions and orders as a base for artistic expressions and aesthetic experiences. After the World War II geometric form was adopted to the public sculpture. Abstract, geometrically constructed sculpture was also used in commemorative functions in modern monument art. The combination of the commemoration of a significant historical event or a national hero, and the aesthetic ideas based on constructivist or concretist art movements caused a lot of debates and confrontations in many Western countries. In particular, the interpretation of abstract monuments problematized: abstract mo…
Invisible Ends Justify Secret Means: Homeland, Machiavelli, and the Least of All Possible Evils
2021
In the rhetoric informing Niccolò Machiavelli’s thought and the contemporary War on Terror, the dialectic between ethics and necessity within the framework of the process of secularization represents a cohesive thread. This very dialectic constitutes also the narrative principle presiding Homeland, one of most insightful TV shows having developed a critical reflection about the present time so far. Dealing with terrorist practices and counterterrorism tactics, the series provides an accurate depiction of the fears featuring nowadays Western societies and the means through which American institutions attempt to answer them . This essay proposes a survey of the conceptual core belonging to th…
The Blaumanis Moment: National Literature Enters the Stage of Art
2012
My aim in this article is to discuss the literary field in Latvia slightly before 1900. More specifically, I want to focus on the particular situation when literature written in the Latvian language ceases to be a product of didactic intention and moralizing value, and makes the crucial step in recognizing its rights to submerge into primarily aesthetic issues. It is also the moment when the personality of the author cuts through the still mostly realistic surface of literary works, making him (or her) be perceived as unmistakably present, even if this move often remains unnoticed by most contemporary and even later observers.1 The author who in my article represents this departure, which u…
Glossary of Morphology
2020
This book is a significant novelty in the scientific and editorial landscape. Morphology is both an ancient and a new discipline that rests on Goethe's heritage and re-forms it in the present through the concepts of form and image. The latter are to be understood as structural elements of a new cultural grammar able to make the late modern world intelligible. In particular, compared to the original Goethean project, but also to C.P. Snow's idea of unifying the “two cultures”, the fields of morphological culture that are the object of this glossary have profoundly changed. The ever-increasing importance of the image as a polysemic form has made the two concepts absolutely transitive, so to s…
Verkörperung: Bild und Experiment bei Edgar Wind und die aktuelle Lage der morphologischen Forschung
2021
Edgar Wind’s The Experiment and Metaphysics examines, in the sense of Goethe’s morphological project, the common structures of scientific and artistic thinking in the light of the reflective value of the image and the technological processes of research and construction of reality. In Wind’s philosophy of em- bodiment the image plays a role in the artistic field comparable to the function of experiments in science. The picture is neither a ‘copy’ nor just a ‘part’ of reality, but rather an ‘embodiment’: at the same time the ‘result’ of human activity and a ‘condition’ for all interpretation of the world. It opens up as an embodiment to a temporality which is not just linear but ‘configured’…

Geography of film provides information on new historiographic perspectives in architecture, space and the imagination of urban environment. A qualitative research methodology was used based on best practices of human geography data transcription and coding. The main findings show…
Der hermeneutische Akt des Übersetzens. Schleiermacher und die Literaturverfilmung
2015
Friedrich Schleiermacher’s notion of translation can be applied productively to the dialogical relationship of literature and film. Whilst a literary translator translates the original text into the target language, thus stepping back behind the original, this process is entirely different in the case of literary adaptation. Here it is the director who takes the author’s place, ostensibly causing the original text to disappear. Furthermore, the translation of a literary text into the language of cinema is an interpretative engagement with, and an attempt to better understand, the original work. In contrast with translation in a stricter sense, which has by its nature a duty to uphold and to…
Music and Emotion: Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives
2014
One of the key reasons people engage with music, whether as listener or performer, therapist or researcher, is because of its emotional impact. Music comforts us when we’re sad, lifts us up in happier times, bonds us together. We use music to modify our mood, augment current feelings, release tension. Given the ever-growing presence of music in our everyday lives, the investigation of issues related to and subsequent dissemination of knowledge concerning music and emotion is becoming increasingly relevant. This special issue is based on work presented at the 3rd International Conference on Music & Emotion (ICME3) organised by the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Resea…

Diplomdarbā “Estētiskie un funkcionālie aspekti sporta zālē”, analizējot pieejamo literatūru, tiek apskatīta estētikas nozīme un funkcionalitātes aspekti sporta zālē.
