Timing and patterns of the ENSO signal in Africa over the last 30 years: insights from normalized difference vegetation index data.

Abstract A more complete picture of the timing and patterns of the ENSO signal during the seasonal cycle for the whole of Africa over the three last decades is provided using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Indeed, NDVI has a higher spatial resolution and is more frequently updated than in situ climate databases, and highlights the impact of ENSO on vegetation dynamics as a combined result of ENSO on rainfall, solar radiation, and temperature. Hybridization within the Rana ridibunda Complex of North Africa

Abstract Cellogel electrophoretic study of the plasma protein pattern, especially the albumin fractions, and microdensitometric determination of erythrocyte nuclear DNA amount in 25 frogs of the Rana ridibunda complex from different localities in Morocco and Algeria allows the conclusion that two different forms of this complex are hybridizing in North Africa, as it is found in the Rana esculenta complex in Europe or in the East Asian green frogs. These forms can be identified by their albumin alleles, but not yet by their morphology. They produce mainly triploid hybrids.

Policy analysis in Africa has mainly focused on their evaluation. Now that several reforms are undertaken and that the progressive move toward democracy allows new actors to enter the political arena, it is useful to analyze how decisions on public issues are made. The dissertation examines the reform of the teacher recruitment policy in francophone Africa. The reform consisted in changing the teacher status in order to allow the government to pay a lower salary to new teachers. The Rwenzori Mountains are located within the Albertine Rift Valley in western Uganda. To monitor the microseismic activity in the area we have deployed a seismic network of up to 35 stations for a period of about 20 months. The analysis of the recordings revealed several earthquake clusters within a restricted area NE of the mountain block. The clusters form elongated pipes with 1–2 km diameter and vertical extensions of 3–5 km. Most of them are located in 5–16 km depths; however one cluster reaches down to 22 km. A re-interpretation of the deep structure of the High Atlas is presented through integration of geophysical and geological data, highlighting the architectural significance of the southern Tethys palaeomargin. Previous crustal models suggest the occurrence of a flat intra-crustal detachment at a depth of � 20 km, a zone where surface thrusts merge and below which the lower High Atlas crust appears continuous. However, within this study seismic refraction data, electrical resistivity surveys and gravity modelling all appear to detect a jump in crustal thickness between the High Atlas and the northern plains.
