Commentary on the MID3 Good Practices Paper
2017
During the last 10 years the European Medicines Agency (EMA) organized a number of workshops on modeling and simulation, working towards greater integration of modeling and simulation (M&S) in the development and regulatory assessment of medicines. In the 2011 EMA - European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) Workshop on Modelling and Simulation, European regulators agreed to the necessity to build expertise to be able to review M&S data provided by companies in their dossier. This led to the establishment of the EMA Modelling and Simulation Working Group (MSWG). Also, there was agreement reached on the need for harmonization on good M&S practices and for conti…

Implementing a Face Recognition System for Media Companies
2018
During the past few years face recognition technologies have greatly benefited from the huge progress in machine learning and now have achieved precision rates that are even comparable with humans. This allows us to apply face recognition technologies more effectively for a number of practical problems in various businesses like media monitoring, security, advertising, entertainment that we previously were not able to do due to low precision rates of existing face recognition technologies. In this paper we discuss how to build a face recognition system for media companies and share our experience gained from implementing one for Latvian national news agency LETA. Our contribution is: which …
Board of director attributes: effects on financial performance in SMEs
2021
This paper analyses the relationship between board of director (BoD) attributes and financial performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Although SMEs are the backbone of world economies, most studies on this relationship focused on large companies and did not consider many typical or recommended processes and activities carried out by SME BoDs. We monitored a set of variables related to BoD attributes such as composition, characteristics, structure and processes for 184 Italian SMEs along with their financials over a 4-year period (2014–2017). We controlled for enterprise-specific characteristics such as annual sales growth, assets value, sales turnover, leverage, com pany s…
Gendered Migratory Pathways: Exploring the Work Trajectories of Long-Term Romanian Migrants
2018
This chapter analyzes the work trajectories of Romanian returnees who lived and worked for a long period of time in other EU countries. To understand the evolution of the work dimension of migrants’ lives, the chapter is built on subjective evaluations of their work experiences before migration, during their stay abroad, and upon return. The qualitative methodology and homogenous sample allow us to employ a gendered perspective on the relationship between international migration and individuals’ work trajectories. Employing a classical sociological distinction between agency and structure, the chapter illustrates four contrasting patterns of work trajectories. Agentic models are differently…
Varieties of agencies during working life changes
2020
The aim of this study is to shed light on the varieties of workers´ agencies in working life change situations, which is an under-researched topic in the literature of workplace learning and in working life studies. The research questions are what kinds of agencies there are to be found when workers encounter changes and how the different kinds of agencies are connected together. The understanding of agency is grounded on the subject-centered socio-cultural approach, whereas the methodological approach is based on applying life-course perspective on research material consisting of 48 working life narratives written by Finnish adults. The narratives are analyzed by abductive content analysis…
Can Signaling Theory Help Agency and Resource Scarcity Theories Explain Franchisee Failure? Predicting SBA-Backed Loan Defaults
2010
This study examines the use of analytic techniques to develop a model that predicts the potential default of Small Business Administration (SBA) backed loans issued to American franchisees. Data collected by World Franchising (WF) in their 2008 survey and by SBA from 2000-2008, covering 271 diverse US franchise chains, on the reported failure rates and charge off percentages of SBA backed loans was used to explore associations between franchisor characteristics and franchisee loan performances. The predictive capability of the derived model was assessed using a data mining technique in which the original data set is split into two different subsets: one for estimation and one for validation…
Precarious Sovereignty in a Post-Liberal Europe : the Covid-19 Emergency in Estonia and Finland
2020
The paper addresses a puzzle resulting from the current global state of alert: the coronavirus pandemic brought us back to the world of the allegedly sovereign nation states with borders and national governments in charge, yet in fact, this retrieved sovereignty looks very vulnerable and precarious. We explain this controversy through a triad of concepts—sovereignty, governmentality, and post-liberalism—that we apply to an analysis of a corona-imposed state of emergency in Estonia and Finland. Based on comparative case study research, we posit that sovereignty is precarious in post-liberalism due to its large dependence on the technologies of responsibilization and agency. From a biopolitic…
Instytucjonalny wymiar ochrony granic zewnętrznych Unii Europejskiej w kontekście bezpieczeństwa państw członkowskich
2018
Jedna…
Bezpieczeństwo granic Unii Europejskiej w kontekście kryzysu migracyjnego 2015/2016
2016
The European Union is a space within which the freedom of movement of citizens, expressed through freedom to travel. work, study or live in a chosen EU country, is realized. The implementation of this freedom was a result of the abolition of Controls at internal borders of the Union. However. for a Member of the EU, the price of this freedom is the necessity to ensure national security, which makes the protection of external borders a special task. The European Union, through the Schengen Agreement, created institutions for the protection of external borders in terms of ensuring the national security of Member States, The current migration crisis is a serious verification of the effectivene…
