Arm Space Decomposition as a Strategy for Tackling Large Scale Multi-armed Bandit Problems

2013

Recent multi-armed bandit based optimization schemes provide near-optimal balancing of arm exploration against arm exploitation, allowing the optimal arm to be identified with probability arbitrarily close to unity. However, the convergence speed drops dramatically as the number of bandit arms grows large, simply because singling out the optimal arm requires experimentation with all of the available arms. Furthermore, effective exploration and exploitation typically demands computational resources that grow linearly with the number of arms. Although the former problem can be remedied to some degree when prior knowledge about arm correlation is available, the latter problem persists. In this…

Reaction of polyamines with diethyloxalate: a convenient route for the synthesis of tetraazacycloalkanes

2006

International audience; The reactivity of various polyamines with diethyloxalate has been investigated. It appears that, in similar experimental conditions, primary diamines give predominantly [2+2] adducts while the use of secondary benzylated polyamines results in [1+1] condensation. Although the intermediate tetraamides formed in the first case are extremely poorly soluble and show very slow reactivity towards reducing agents, cyclam has been obtained by using ultrasounds during the reaction of the corresponding tetraoxomacrocycle with BH 3 /THF. The [1+1] cyclization reaction of diversely N-benzylated linear tetraamines, whose selective syntheses have been devised herein, gives access t…

Design time, run time, and artificial intelligence techniques for mobility of user interface

2011

Abstract Advancement in technology provides opportunities to user as well as challenges for application development organization. User interfaces which were design for specific device tend to be developed for various devices. Users are busy people, when they move among different context would like to move application with them. The current trend of users demanding mobile graphic user interface to support their daily life and work has led to a new generation of techniques. Design time technique provides better usability as compare to run time technique. On the other hand artificial intelligence technique like agent provides better flexibility and usability as compare to others. In this paper…

Use of a Semantic Language to Reduce the Indeterminacy in Agents Communication

2014

In the field of agent communications uncertainty and vagueness in the message content and in the achievable results play a primordial role when two agents (human or artificial) communicate. Even though the importance of vagueness and uncertainty has been recognized long ago, only recently mechanisms related to the communications’ semantics that allow a practical approach have been designed; more specifically, the development of tools such as agent programming languages and frameworks, which is a field of intensive research. On the other hand, recent theoretical ideas, drawn from situation semantics theory and the works of Sutton on semantic information, support this work. This paper applies…

How news affect the trading behavior of different categories of investors in a financial market

2015

We investigate the trading behavior of a large set of single investors trading the highly liquid Nokia stock over the period 2003-2008 with the aim of determining the relative role of endogenous and exogenous factors that may affect their behavior. As endogenous factors we consider returns and volatility, whereas the exogenous factors we use are the total daily number of news and a semantic variable based on a sentiment analysis of news. Linear regression and partial correlation analysis of data show that different categories of investors are differently correlated to these factors. Governmental and non profit organizations are weakly sensitive to news and returns or volatility, and, typica…

Decagram-Scale Synthesis of Multicolor Carbon Nanodots: Self-Tracking Nanoheaters with Inherent and Selective Anticancer Properties

2022

Carbon nanodots (CDs) are a new class of carbon-based nanoparticles endowed with photoluminescence, high specific surface area, and good photothermal conversion, which have spearheaded many breakthroughs in medicine, especially in drug delivery and cancer theranostics. However, the tight control of their structural, optical, and biological properties and the synthesis scale-up have been very difficult so far. Here, we report for the first time an efficient protocol for the one-step synthesis of decagram-scale quantities of N,S-doped CDs with a narrow size distribution, along with a single nanostructure multicolor emission, high near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion efficiency, and sel…

MTOR inhibitor-based combination therapies for pancreatic cancer

2018

Background: Although the mechanistic target of rapamycin (MTOR) kinase, included in the mTORC1 and mTORC2 signalling hubs, has been demonstrated to be active in a significant fraction of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the value of the kinase as a therapeutic target needs further clarification. Methods: We used Mtor floxed mice to analyse the function of the kinase in context of the pancreas at the genetic level. Using a dual-recombinase system, which is based on the flippase-FRT (Flp-FRT) and Cre-loxP recombination technologies, we generated a novel cellular model, allowing the genetic analysis of MTOR functions in tumour maintenance. Cross-species validation and pha…

Thiazole Analogues of the Marine Alkaloid Nortopsentin as Inhibitors of Bacterial Biofilm Formation

2020

Anti-virulence strategy is currently considered a promising approach to overcome the global threat of the antibiotic resistance. Among different bacterial virulence factors, the biofilm formation is recognized as one of the most relevant. Considering the high and growing percentage of multi-drug resistant infections that are biofilm-mediated, new therapeutic agents capable of counteracting the formation of biofilms are urgently required. In this scenario, a new series of 18 thiazole derivatives was efficiently synthesized and evaluated for its ability to inhibit biofilm formation against the Gram-positive bacterial reference strains Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and S. aureus ATCC 6538 a…

Synthesis, antiproliferative activity, and in silico insights of new 3-benzoylamino-benzo[ b ]thiophene derivatives

2014

A new series of 3-benzoylamino-5-imidazol-5-yl-benzo[b]thiophenes and the parent amino derivatives were synthesized and screened as antitumor agents. All tested compounds showed concentration-dependent antiproliferative activity profile against HeLa cell line, exhibiting GI50 values in the low micromolar range. The most active compounds were tested in cell cycle perturbation experiments. A rapid accumulation of cells in the G2/M phase, with a concomitant reduction of cells in both the S and G0/G1 phases, was observed, suggesting that cell exposure to selected derivatives produces mitotic failure. To rationalize the biological results, the 3-benzoylamino-benzo[b]thiophenes were analyzed thro…

Laskenta-ammattilaisuus Tilisanomat-lehdessä vuosina 2010-2015

2017

Tutkielmassa tutkittiin laskenta-ammattilaisuuden stereotypioita Tilisanomat-lehdessä vuosina 2010—2015. Tutkimusaineistona on lehtiartikkelit, joten tutkimus on kvalitatiivinen.
