Motor abnormalities and basal ganglia in first-episode psychosis (FEP)

2020

AbstractBackgroundMotor abnormalities (MAs) are the primary manifestations of schizophrenia. However, the extent to which MAs are related to alterations of subcortical structures remains understudied.MethodsWe aimed to investigate the associations of MAs and basal ganglia abnormalities in first-episode psychosis (FEP) and healthy controls. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on 48 right-handed FEP and 23 age-, gender-, handedness-, and educational attainment-matched controls, to obtain basal ganglia shape analysis, diffusion tensor imaging techniques (fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity), and relaxometry (R2*) to estimate iron load. A comprehensive motor battery was applied incl…

Ketamine in acute phase of severe traumatic brain injury “an old drug for new uses?”

2021

AbstractMaintaining an adequate level of sedation and analgesia plays a key role in the management of traumatic brain injury (TBI). To date, it is unclear which drug or combination of drugs is most effective in achieving these goals. Ketamine is an agent with attractive pharmacological and pharmacokinetics characteristics. Current evidence shows that ketamine does not increase and may instead decrease intracranial pressure, and its safety profile makes it a reliable tool in the prehospital environment. In this point of view, we discuss different aspects of the use of ketamine in the acute phase of TBI, with its potential benefits and pitfalls.

Inattentiveness, parental smoking and adolescent smoking initiation

2004

Aims  To examine how adolescents’ inattentive behaviour, together with parental smoking patterns, predicts smoking initiation by age 14. Design, settings  A prospective, longitudinal study: baseline at ages 11–12, follow-up at age 14. A population-based sample of Finnish twins, born 1983–1987, with parents and classroom teachers as additional informants. Two groups were formed, allocating the co-twins of each family into separate groups: the study sample and a replication sample. Participants  Twin individuals (n = 4552), aged 11–12 at baseline and 14 (average 14.04 years) at follow-up. Measurements  At baseline, inattentiveness was assessed with the Multidimensional Peer Nomination Invento…

Antipsychotic prescription and mortality in hospitalized older persons

2016

Background: Recent scientific reports have shown that older persons treated with antipsychotics for dementia-related behavioural symptoms have increased mortality. However, the impact of these drugs prescribed during hospitalization has rarely been assessed. We aimed to investigate whether antipsychotics are associated with an increased risk of mortality during hospitalization and at 3-month follow-up in elderly inpatients. Methods: We analyzed data gathered during two waves (2010 and 2012) by the REPOSI (Registro Politerapie Società Italiana Medicina Interna). All new prescriptions of antipsychotic drugs during hospitalization, whether maintained or discontinued at discharge, were collect…

Synthesis, physicochemical characterization, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and psychotropic activity of new N-[1,3-(benzo)thiazol-2-…

2012

Abstract A series of new N-[(benzo)thiazol-2-yl]-2/3-[3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2(1H)-yl]ethan/propanamide derivatives was synthesized and characterized by 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy and mass-spectrometry. A single crystal X-ray study of N-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl)-2-[3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2(1H)-yl]ethanamide is reported to determine its conformational feature. The investigated compounds were found to be active in psychotropic in vivo, anti-inflammatory in vivo and cytotoxicity in vitro screening. They possess marked sedative action, reveal high anti-inflammatory activity, have selective cytotoxic effects and NO-induction ability concerning tumour cell lines. Some of the compounds synthesi…

Infralow neurofeedback in the treatment of substance use disorders: a randomized controlled trial

2022

Background Infralow neurofeedback (ILF-NF) was recently developed as a subtype of traditional, frequency-based neurofeedback that targets cerebral rhythmic activity below 0.5 Hz and improves brain self-regulation. The efficacy of ILF-NF in the treatment of substance use disorder has not yet been evaluated, but clinical evidence suggests that it may prevent relapse by improving functioning in various life domains. The current study aimed to fill this research gap and extend empirical evidence related to this issue. Methods Ninety-three patients with substance use disorders at an outpatient unit in Norway were randomized to receive 20 sessions (30 minutes each) of ILF-NF training combined wit…

Visual hallucinations and agitation in Alzheimer's Disease due to memantine: report of three cases

2007

Memantine, a non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, is currently the only drug proposed for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease.1 It has been shown to have neuroprotective effects by inhibiting the excitotoxic effect of NMDA glutamate receptors.2 Memantine has a tolerability profile similar to placebo.1 However, the worsening of psychotic symptoms in patients with Lewy body dementia (LBD) treated with memantine has been recently reported.3 We describe three patients with probable Alzheimer’s disease who developed worsening or de novo visual hallucinations and agitation after memantine treatment. Patient 1 was a 65-year-old woman with a 2-year hi…

Integration of GMR sensors with different technologies

2016

Less than thirty years after the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect was described, GMR sensors are the preferred choice in many applications demanding the measurement of low magnetic fields in small volumes. This rapid deployment from theoretical basis to market and state-of-the-art applications can be explained by the combination of excellent inherent properties with the feasibility of fabrication, allowing the real integration with many other standard technologies. In this paper, we present a review focusing on how this capability of integration has allowed the improvement of the inherent capabilities and, therefore, the range of application of GMR sensors. After briefly describing the …
