Wood Ash Effects on Soil Fauna and Interactions with Carbohydrate Supply: A Minireview
2011
Wood ash effects on soil animals in a boreal forest ecosystem are reviewed focusing on recent results on interactive effects of wood ash and organic amendments, and laboratory microcosms as a tool to understand soil food webs are discussed. Loose wood ash can reduce the populations of enchytraeids, collembolans and mites, but increase nematode populations particularly in experimental laboratory ecosystems with little or no primary production. Recent studies indicate that the repressive effect on enchytraeids depends on carbon availability. Carbohydrate supply seemed to alleviate the negative wood ash effect on enchytraeid body size and abundance. The fact that carbon alleviated wood ash eff…

Sorption of uranium(VI) onto ferric oxides in sulfate-rich acid waters.
2003
The mechanisms of the uranium(VI) sorption on schwertmannite and goethite in acid sulfate-rich solutions were studied by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The samples were prepared under N2 atmosphere and initial uranium(VI) concentrations of 1 x 10(-5) (pH 6.5) to 5 x 10(-5) M (pH 4.2). The ionic strength was adjusted using 0.01 M Na2SO4 or 0.01 M NaClO4, respectively. The EXAFS structural parameters for uranium(VI) sorbed on goethite in sulfate-rich, acid and near-neutral solutions indicate that uranium(VI) forms an inner-sphere, mononuclear, bidentate surface complex. This complex is characterized by a uranium-ferric-iron distance of approximately 3.45 A. Ura…
THE OCCURRENCE OF CHROMIUM IN RAW MATERIALS AND ITS FATE IN THE BREWING PROCESS
1987
The chromium content of raw materials, intermediate and final products in the brewing process were determined in order to evaluate the contribution of raw materials to the chromium content of beer. The contribution due to beer in the diet is considered in the light of the recommended daily intake of chromium.
Facile Synthesis of Fluorescent Polymer Nanoparticles by Covalent Modification-Nanoprecipitation of Amine-Reactive Ester Polymers
2015
Emission wavelength control in fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) is crucial for their applications. In the case of inorganic quantum dots or dye-impregnated silica NPs, such a control is readily achieved by changing the size of the particles or choosing appropriate fluorescent dyes, respectively. A similar modular approach for controlling the emission wavelength of fluo-rescent polymer NPs, however, is difficult. This article reports on fluorescent polymer NPs, the synthesis of which provides a platform for a modular approach towards the preparation of fluorescent NPs of desired emission wavelength. Atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is employed to synthesize reactive ester polymers,…
Synthese und pharmakologische Wirkung von carbocyclischen Muskarinanalogen
1974
Als carbocyclische Muskarinanaloga wurden das (3-Hydroxycyclopentylmethyl)trimethyl-ammonium-jodid und dessen Acetat dargestellt und am isolierten Ileum des Meerschweinchens untersucht. Synthesis and Pharmacological Activity of Carbocyclic Analogs of Muscarine As carbocyclic analogs of muscarine (3-hydroxycyclopentylmethyl)trimethylammonium iodide and (3-acetoxycyclopentylmethyl)trimethylammonium iodide were synthesized and tested on the isolated guinea pig ileum.

Negatively charged lipid molecules were converted into polymerizable lipids by introduction of polymerizable mono- or bifunctional counterions. As an attempt to mimic the cytoskeleton of biomembranes, unsymmetrical polymeric vesicles were prepared, where the polyelectrolyte is attached either only to the inner or to the outer bilayer surfaces. Polymerizable cations were introduced to the outer surface of preformed small unilamellar vesicles via ion-exchange. The outer counterions of vesicles bearing polymerizable counterions at both sides of the membrane were replaced by Na+. Polymerization of these systems leads to unsymmetrical vesicles. The introduction, separation and polymerization of …
Effects of fire on ash thickness in a Lithuanian grassland and short-term spatio-temporal changes
2012
Ash thickness is a key variable in the protection of soil against erosion agents after planned and unplanned fires. Thicker ash provides better protection against raindrop impact and reduces the runoff response by retaining water and promoting water infiltra5 tion although little is known about the distribution and the evolution of the ash layer after the fires. Ash thickness measurements were conducted along two transects (flat and sloping areas) following a a grid experimental design. Both transects extended from the burned area into an adjacent unburned area. We analysed ash thickness evolution according to time and fire severity. In order to interpolate data with accuracy and iden10 tif…
Effective Recovery Process of Copper from Waste Printed Circuit Boards Utilizing Recycling of Leachate
2020
AbstractThis study presents an optimized leaching and electrowinning process for the recovery of copper from waste printed circuit boards including studies of chemical consumption and recirculation of leachate. Optimization of leaching was performed using response surface methodology in diluted sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide media. Optimum leaching conditions for copper were found by using 3.6 mol L−1 sulfuric acid, 6 vol.% hydrogen peroxide, pulp density of 75 g L−1 with 186 min leaching time at 20°C resulting in complete leaching of copper followed by over 92% recovery and purity of 99.9% in the electrowinning. Study of chemical consumption showed total decomposition of hydrogen pero…
