The effectiveness of 12 months' intensive shoulder strength training on disability, health-related quality of life and shoulder function after rotato…
2017
This study examined the effectiveness of intensive shoulder strength training on disability, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and shoulder function in patients who had undergone rotator cuff repair (RCR). In addition, the self- report section of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Assessment Form (ASES) was cross-culturally adapted to the Finnish language and the psychometric properties of the Finnish version were assessed. Patients with a rotator cuff tear (aged 41-62 years) were randomized into an exercise group (EG, n=35) or a usual care group (UCG, n=32) after RCR. Disability was assessed with ASES questionnaire and quality of life with Short- Form 36 Health Surv…
Digital Diasporas : An Overview of the Research Areas of Migrationand New Media Through a Narrative Literature Review
2019
Academic research on migration and the use of new media constitutes a growing field. The first studies dealing explicitly with the field appeared in the end of the 1990s. Now, it has become an established research area. The impact and importance of the new technologies for migrants is well established. Appropriation of ICTs and new media environments have become a ubiquitous feature of everyday life in migrant groups. The research area is still understudied, characterized by rapid changes and shifts, and is shaped by the changing structural conditions of migrants and the proliferation of forms of media. In this article, I provide an overview of the developing research area through a review …
Managers’ Moral Struggle : A Case Study on Ethical Dilemmas and Ethical Decision-making in the Context of Immigration
2019
This qualitative study explores the types of ethical dilemmas that Finnish managers working in reception centres for asylum seekers have encountered and whether the moral intensity of the ethical issues was observable in the ethical decision-making. It concludes that the majority of the managers interviewed encountered ethical dilemmas relating to the termination of reception services. The ethical dilemmas were stratified into seven groups: ambiguous or complete absence of relevant instructions, lack of support, conflicting values, withholding information, pressure, discretionary stress, and unjust decisions on asylum applications. In addition, various dimensions of moral intensity were obs…
Optimization criteria in sample selection step of local regression for quantitative analysis of large soil NIRS database
2012
International audience; Large soil spectral libraries compiling thousands of NIR (Near Infrared) reflectance spectra have been created encompassing a wide diversity and heterogeneity of spectra. Among the many chemometric approaches to the calibration of chemical and physical properties from these large libraries, local calibrations have the advantage of being able to select the most similar spectra to the spectrum of a target sample. This is particularly relevant when dealing with highly heterogeneous media such as soils, where the mineral matrix has a strong influence on spectral features. A crucial step in the implementation of local calibration procedures is the construction of local ne…
The Soldiers of Odin Finland : From a local movement to an international franchise
2019
This chapter analyzes the growth of the Soldier of Odin Finland from a local phenomenon to an international movement, exploring the reasons behind both the success of the SOO, and its later decline in Finland as well as internationally. Additionally, the chapter describes the connections of the SOO with the Finnish extreme right and competition they had with other street patrol organizations. It scrutinizes the rhetoric they use and the ideology they share, and analyzes profiles of SOO leaders in Finland. The chapter is based on data drawn from interviews with Soldiers of Odin and other street patrol groups, police and court files, and online observation. peerReviewed
Čelovek pered licom zla : mir geroev romana Aleksandra Solženicyna V kruge pervom
2001
The study is concerned with the worlds of heroes in Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's novel The First Circle. The main methodological principle is tracing and analysing the point of view of the hero and the ways in which it is narrated (>close reading=). The work consists of two parts, titled Power and Man and the System. Approaches vary from socio-critical and historical ones to psychological and philosophical enquiries. On the basis of such multi-faceted criticism, the poetical canvas of the novel is constructed. The analysis proceeds along the lines of the plot of the novel. One of the most important aspects of this particular novel, and of the author's whole artistic work, is its grounding in fac…

Tests of multinormality based on location vectors and scatter matrices
2007
Classical univariate measures of asymmetry such as Pearson’s (mean-median)/σ or (mean-mode)/σ often measure the standardized distance between two separate location parameters and have been widely used in assessing univariate normality. Similarly, measures of univariate kurtosis are often just ratios of two scale measures. The classical standardized fourth moment and the ratio of the mean deviation to the standard deviation serve as examples. In this paper we consider tests of multinormality which are based on the Mahalanobis distance between two multivariate location vector estimates or on the (matrix) distance between two scatter matrix estimates, respectively. Asymptotic theory is develop…
Factors Affecting E-Business Adoption by SMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa
2009
The use of information communication technologies (ICT) especially the Internet by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is on the increase in many regions of the world, including Africa. Nevertheless, empirical evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) regarding the factors that affect the adoption of e-business is scarce. In that regard, the main objective of this chapter is to fill the research gap with an exploratory study that is aimed at eliciting views from SMEs in Nigeria. This article made use of a theoretical framework encompassing organizational, external and technological contexts to deliberate the issue. A survey is conducted in three Nigerian cities and the findings of the s…
First morphogenetic analysis of parasite eggs from Schistosomiasis haematobium infected sub-Saharan migrants in Spain and proposal for a new standard…
2021
International audience; Schistosomiasis is a Neglected Tropical Disease caused by trematode species of the genus Schistosoma. Both, autochthonous and imported cases of urogenital schistosomiasis have been described in Europe. The present study focuses on eggs, considered pure S. haematobium by genetic characterisation (intergenic ITS region of the rDNA and cox1 mtDNA). A phenotypic characterisation of S. haematobium eggs was made by morphometric comparison with experimental populations of S. bovis and S. mansoni, to help in the diagnosis of S. haematobium populations infecting sub-Saharan migrants in Spain. Analyses were made by Computer Image Analysis System (CIAS) applied on the basis of …
