Recent advances on HIV DNA vaccines development: Stepwise improvements to clinical trials.

2019

According to WHO (World Health Organization) reports, more than 770,000 people died from HIV and almost 1.7 million people becoming newly infected in the worldwide in 2018. Therefore, many attempts should be done to produce a forceful vaccine to control the AIDS. DNA-based vaccines have been investigated for HIV vaccination by researches during the recent 20 years. The DNA vaccines are novel approach for induction of both type of immune responses (cellular and humoral) in the host cells and have many advantages including high stability, fast and easy of fabrication and absence of severe side effects when compared with other vaccination methods. Recent studies have been focused on vaccine de…

Post-cesarean section morbidity in HIV-positive women

1999

Background The present work is an audit of post-cesarean section morbidity in HIV-positive women in the tertiary teaching hospital La Fe, Valencia, Spain. Study design. Retrospective case-control study. Subjects. Forty-five HIV-positive pregnant women and 90 appropriately matched controls, delivered by cesarean section in the same hospital and managed using a uniform protocol. Main outcome measures. The duration of stay in hospital after cesarean section, the need for postoperative antibiotics and the incidence of major and minor puerperal complications. Baseline characteristics of HIV-positive women were also analyzed in relation to the morbidity after surgery. Statistical analysis. Chi-sq…

Sérologie discordante du VIH/sida et vie des couples en République du Congo : profil sociodémographique, comportements, facteurs de survie et prise e…

2020

For more than two decades, the health of populations has been at the heart of developmental issues. Population health issues fall within the "health, population and development" paradigm. It is in this spirit that experts demonstrated at the 1994 Cairo Conference on Population and Development that HIV/AIDS affects both population growth and sustainable development. Likewise, HIV infection is a source of discrimination, social inequalities, and the weakening of couples and families to the point where some individuals are even ostracized because of their HIV-positive status. In these conditions, how do people of different serological status live their married lives and their procreation despi…

The triaminopyridine flupirtine prevents cell death in rat cortical cells induced by N-methyl-D-aspartate and gp120 of HIV-1.

1994

Abstract Flupirtine, a triaminopyridine derivative, is a non-opiate centrally acting analgesic agent with muscle relaxant properties. Now we show that this drug displays a potent cytoprotective effect on neurons (rat cortical cells) treated with (i) the excitatory amino acid N-methyl- d -aspartate (NMDA) or (ii) with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) coat protein gp120. In the absence of the drug the two agents cause a >90% reduction of cell viability after a 18 h incubation. During this period the DNA in the cells undergoes fragmentation and shows a pattern which is typical for cell death. If the neurons were preincubated with flupirtine for 2 h and subsequently exposed to th…

Pulmonary aspergilloma in a patient with AIDS.

1995

Aspergillus infections are rare in the course of AIDS. They mostly occur as invasive destructive disease in patients with severe CD4 cell depletion. An unusual case of a homosexual AIDS patient who developed a pulmonary aspergilloma is presented.

Exceptional Heterogeneity in Viral Evolutionary Dynamics Characterises Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection.

2016

The treatment of HCV infection has seen significant progress, particularly since the approval of new direct-acting antiviral drugs. However these clinical achievements have been made despite an incomplete understanding of HCV replication and within-host evolution, especially compared with HIV-1. Here, we undertake a comprehensive analysis of HCV within-host evolution during chronic infection by investigating over 4000 viral sequences sampled longitudinally from 15 HCV-infected patients. We compare our HCV results to those from a well-studied HIV-1 cohort, revealing key differences in the evolutionary behaviour of these two chronic-infecting pathogens. Notably, we find an exceptional level o…

La diagnostica delle malattie infettive: Tra metafora del passato e itinerario nel futuro

1993

A global emergency is threatening mankind, awakening dead ghosts and causing alarm about our present and future: it is the apparently irreversible spread of infectious diseases. This critical and worrying situation should be acknowledged and carefully followed by the radiological profession since all of us – teachers, specialists, professionals – have to deal with imaging diagnostic modalities deriving information from a deceitful and camouflageing anatomo-functional substratum. The increasing spread of infectious diseases is due to a wide range of concomitant factors: HIV infection, drug addiction, migration fenomena and the related opportunistic infections combined with poor hygienic, physi…

Translation, Adaption, and Psychometric Testing of the Myanmar Version of the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey for People Living With HIV…

2021

Introduction: Valid and reliable instruments are crucial for measuring perceived social support among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the English version of the 19-item Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) adapted for PLHIV in Myanmar. Methods: Based on a standard cross-cultural procedure, we adapted the MOS-SSS and formed a Myanmar version of the scale (MOS-SSS-M), and then tested its validity and reliability. A sample of 250 eligible PLHIV was collected from a closed Facebook group that included more than 10,000 Myanmars, most of whom were PLHIV.Results: The MOS-SSS-M achieved a Cronbach’s α of 0.82–0.95. Confirmatory…

The spontaneous use of memory aids at different educational levels

1996

Three groups of students in different educational levels: 8th–9th grade students (average age 15); 10th–11th grade students (average age 16); and college students (average age 21), completed a metamemory questionnaire on the use of external, general, and formal memory aids in everyday life and study situations. Short-term repetition, mental rehearsing, and summary elaboration were the most frequent aids. The least frequently used were those that require a special training to be used effectively (e.g. Digit-letters and method of loci). There were differences in the use of general memory aids due to education level, but not in the case of external and formal memory aids. Results showed also t…
