Economists and Eugenics: Progressive Era Racism and its (Jewish) Discontents

This chapter analyzes the contribution to the debates on labor and immigration of a group of Jewish academicians and reformers who, during the second half of the Progressive Era, explicitly took a stance against the racialist and eugenic rhetoric of the period. This group includes first-rank economists like Edwin R. A. Seligman, Jacob H. Hollander, and Emanuel A. Goldenweiser; influential field specialists such as Isaac A. Hourwich and Isaac M. Rubinow; and relatively less known figures like Max J. Kohler and Samuel K. Joseph. By focusing on the voices of these dissenters, this chapter enriches the emerging picture of Progressive Era eugenic and racial thought.
Reflections about the authentic document in "post mortem" fecundation

[EN] The legislation on assisted reproduction contemplates the ¿post mortem¿ fecundation. Nevertheless, the document for the presentation of the assent raises some doubts in relation with the principle of party autonomy and the new technologies of the information and communication (ICTs). In the present work one thinks about these questions and one tries to contribute some solution of application in the Spanish legal system.

The reverse mortgage is a credit or loan guaranteed by a mortgage that falls on the applicant?s habitual residence, granted at once, or through periodic benefits, to a person who must be over a certain age or prove a degree of disability or dependency, and is not due until the time of death. In view of the doubts that the future of the public pension is raising and the concentration of savings in Spanish property, the reverse mortgage is once again being put on the table as a viable alternative to complement a public pension with little revaluation, in view of the increase in life expectancy and expenses after retirement.
A dual channel sulphur-containing a macrocycle functionalised BODIPY probe for the detection of Hg(II) in a mixed aqueous solution

We report herein the synthesis and chromo-fluorogenic behaviour of a new probe 1 containing a boron-dipirromethene (BODIPY) unit electronically connected with a dithia-dioxa-aza macrocycle. Acetonitrile and water-acetonitrile 95:5 v/v solutions of the probe showed an ICT band in the visible zone and are nearly non-emissive. When acetonitrile was used as solvent, addition of Hg(II) and trivalent metal cations induced an hypsochromic shift of the absorption band and moderate emission enhancements. Research Findings: This study examined whether teacher-child interaction quality varied as a function of type of activity in toddler classrooms in four European countries (Finland, Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal). It also investigated whether specific activity settings, namely levels of adult involvement, use of whole group, and children’s engagement with materials, explained differences in teacher-child interaction quality across activities. Participants were 129 toddler classrooms and their lead teachers, specifically, 28 in the Netherlands, 40 in Finland, 31 in Portugal, and 30 in Poland.
