Correlation of the highest-energy cosmic rays with nearby extragalactic objects.
2007
Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during the past 3.7 years, we demonstrated a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energy above ~ 6x10^{19} electron volts and the positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) lying within ~ 75 megaparsecs. We rejected the hypothesis of an isotropic distribution of these cosmic rays with at least a 99% confidence level from a prescribed a priori test. The correlation we observed is compatible with the hypothesis that the highest energy particles originate from nearby extragalactic sources whose flux has not been substantially reduced by interaction with the cosmic background radiation. AGN or objects having a similar…
Sorveglianza attiva delle patologie pneumococciche invasive dell'età pediatrica: l’esperienza della Regione Sicilia nel triennio 2009-2011
2013
S.pneumoniae is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children globally. Since 2007 the World Health Organization has recommended anti-pneumococcal vaccination to reduce the burden of invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD). The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of IPD in Sicilian children and describe the distribution of serotypes in subjects with IPD following the recent introduction of a universal vaccination program. Active surveillance of IPD (PneumoNet) was carried out in Sicily from 2009 to 2011 by nine reference hospitals (one per province) and one-hundred randomly sampled family pediatricians. Hospital discharge data of participating hospitals were also analyzed…
TROMBECTOMIA INTRACORONARICA CON NeVA STENT RETRIEVER IN PAZIENTI AFFETTI DA SINDROME CORONARICA ACUTA: ESPERIENZA MULTICENTRICA FIRST-IN-MEN

A new approach to ticagrelor-based de-escalation of antiplatelet therapy after acute coronary syndrome. A rationale for a randomized, double-blind, p…
2021
The risk of ischemic events gradually decreases after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), reaching a stable level after 1 month, while the risk of bleeding remains steady during the whole period of dual antiplatelet treatment (DAPT). Several de-escalation strategies of antiplatelet treatment aiming to enhance safety of DAPT without depriving it of its efficacy have been evaluated so far. We hypothesized that reduction of the ticagrelor maintenance dose 1 month after ACS and its continuation until 12 months after ACS may improve adherence to antiplatelet treatment due to better tolerability compared with the standard dose of ticagrelor. Moreover, improved safety of treatment and preserved anti-is…
Diagnosis and management of coagulation derangements in patients with acute leukemia: is there a potential role for thromboelastography?
2021
Background: Acute leukemia (AL) is characterized by a complex spectrum of coagulopathy ranging from a high bleeding risk to thrombotic risk, varying according to disease phases and treatments. To date platelet count and conventional coagulation tests (CCTs) have been unable to predict thrombotic and hemorrhagic risk in AL. Objectives: Thromboelastography (TEG) is a global haemostatic test that measures the viscoelastic properties of the clot, thus providing information on the entire process of blood coagulation. The primary aim of this study was to assess with TEG the coagulation balance in patients with AL, from diagnosis to the end of first cycle of chemotherapy (CHT). Methods: Assessment…
Biology and management of therapy-related acute promyelocytic leukemia.
2013
Therapy-related acute promyelocytic leukemia (t-APL) has been increasingly reported after exposure to cytotoxic and/or immunosuppressive agents given for prior malignancies or autoimmune diseases. t-APL represents both a model for better understanding human leukemogenesis and an interesting therapeutic subset which requires specific adaptations for optimal management. We discuss here potential risk factors for t-APL development and the main biologic and clinical characteristics of t-APL as compared to de-novo APL.In addition, we review therapeutic results obtained in patients with t-APL receiving conventional retinoic acid and chemotherapy and discuss new treatment opportunities with minimal…
ChemInform Abstract: First Reactions of 2,2′-Bisindolyls with Electrophilic Azo Compounds and Diethyl Mesoxalate.
2010
Conformations and some electronic properties of the 2,2′-bisindolyls 6 were calculated for the prediction of probable Diels-Alder reactivity, in analogy to previous work on 2-vinylindoles. First reactions with dienophiles revealed that compounds 6 did not participate in [4 + 2]cycloadditions but rather underwent simple electrophilic substitutions at the enamine function with, above all, some heterodienophiles.
Intercalated cells as a probable source for the development of renal oncocytoma
1988
Renal oncocytoma is a distinct type of epithelial tumor said to arise from the collecting duct system. Here we show that in nine of ten oncocytomas the tumor cells expressed an analog of the erythrocyte anion exchanger band 3. In the normal kidney band 3 is confined to the basolateral surface of the majority of intercalated cells which comprise up to 50% of the cortical collecting duct epithelium. Carbonic anhydrase c is another protein abundant in intercalated cells, and this was also expressed in six of the ten oncocytomas investigated. Immunoreactivity specific for band 3 and carbonic anhydrase c was not detected in any of the 20 renal cell carcinomas examined. At favourable section plan…
