Alkamides from Echinacea angustifolia Interact with P-Glycoprotein of Primary Brain Capillary Endothelial Cells Isolated from Porcine Brain Blood Ves…
2013
The blood-brain barrier prevents the passage of toxic compounds from blood circulation into brain tissue. Unfortunately, drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumors, and other diseases also do not cross the blood-brain barrier. In the present investigation, we used isolated porcine brain capillary endothelial cells and a flow cytometric calcein-AM assay to analyze inhibition of P-glycoprotein, a major constituent of the blood-brain barrier. We tested 8 alkamides isolated from Echinacea angustifolia and found that four of them inhibited P-glycoprotein-mediated calcein transport in porcine brain capillary endothelial cells.

Spectrophotometric determination of ethiofencarb in waters by reaction with p-aminophenol
1993
An automatized procedure has been developed for the spectrophotometric determination of ethiofencarb in water by reaction with p-aminophenol after alkaline hydrolysis to obtain the corresponding phenol sulphone. The hydrolyzed samples are continuously introduced into different manifolds at the same time as 300 mg/l p-aminophenol, 0.004 mol/l KIO4 and 0.04 mol/l NaOH solutions. The absorbance is measured at 638 nm after a reaction time of 6 min in stop flow. This absorbance band corresponds to the indo dye obtained from the reaction between the phenol sulphone of ethiofencarb and the quinoneimine form of the p-aminophenol and it permits a matrix-free spectrophotometric determination of ethio…
On nature of the transient IR-absorption STE-like bands at 0.15–0.36eV in alkali halides
2001
New evidence is given that two classes (A and B) of the transient IR-absorption bands: (A) with max. at 0.15-0.36 eV (in NaCl : I, NaBr, NaI, KCl : I, KBr : I, RbCl : I, RbBr : I), due to on-centre self-trapped exciton and (B) with max. at 0.27-0.36 eV (in NaCI, KCl, KBr, RbCl), due to shallow trapped electrons or bound polarons, are caused by the same defect-shallow trapped electron (e-) at the substitutional (cation: c-site) alkali impurity cation (M + ): [M - ] 0 c e - . The A- and B-class IR bands have the same location, similar shape, half-width (exactly coincide for KCl : I and KCl at 80 or 10 K with the same vibration structure). It is established that the same Mollwo-Ivey plot curve…

Associations of physical activity in detailed intensity ranges with body composition and physical function. a cross-sectional study among sedentary o…
2019
Background Physical activity is crucial to maintain older adults’ health and functioning, but the health benefits of particular activity intensities remain unclear. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to peruse the distribution of physical activity, and to investigate the associations of particular physical activity intensities with body composition and physical function among older adults. Methods The sample comprised of 293 community-dwelling sedentary or at most moderately active older adults (42% men, mean age 74 ± 4 years). Physical activity was measured with a hip-worn tri-axial accelerometer over seven consecutive days, and investigated in detailed intensity range and in catego…
Metabolic shift of polyphosphate-accumulating organisms with different levels of polyphosphate storage
2012
Previous studies have shown that polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) are able to behave as glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) under different conditions. In this study we investigated the behavior of a culture enriched with Accumulibacter at different levels of polyphosphate (poly-P) storage. The results of stoichiometric ratios Gly degraded/HAc uptake, PHB synthesized/HAc uptake, PHV synthesized/HAc uptake and P release/HAc uptake confirmed a metabolic shift from PAO metabolism to GAO metabolism: PAOs with high poly-P content used the poly-P to obtain adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP), and glycogen (Gly) to obtain nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and some ATP. In a test whe…

AIBN lost unte…
A capillary liquid chromatography method for benzalkonium chloride determination as a component or contaminant in mixtures of biocides
2015
A method for quantifying benzalkonium chloride (BAK), an alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium compound, in several biocides formulations is proposed. A tertiary amine like N-(3-aminopropyl)-N-dodecyl-1,3-propanediamine (TA) and a straight-chain alkyl ammonium compound like trimethyl-tetradecyl ammonium chloride (TMTDAC), have been employed as trade surfactants besides BAK. Two capillary analytical columns with different polarities are tested: inertsil CN-3 capillary column (150mm×0.5mm i.d., 3μm particle diameter) and a non endcapped Zorbax C18 capillary column (35mm×0.5mm i.d., 5μm particle diameter). This latter column provided the best separation of the BAK homologues in less than 12min using …
