SN1 Reactions in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide in the Presence of Alcohols: the Role of Preferential Solvation

2016

Ethanol (3b) inhibits SN1 reactions of alkyl halides 1 in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) and gives no ethers as products. The unexpected behaviour of alcohols 3 in the reaction of alkyl halides 1 with 1,3-dimethoxybenzene (2) in scCO2 under different conditions is rationalised in terms of Bronsted and Lewis acid–base equilibria of reagents, intermediates, additives and products in a singular solvent characterised by: (i) the strong quadrupole and Lewis acid character of carbon dioxide, which hinders SN2 paths by strongly solvating basic solutes; (ii) the weak Lewis base character of carbon dioxide, which prevents it from behaving as a proton sink; (iii) the compressible nature of scCO…

Impact of the reaction pathway on the final product in on-surface synthesis

2020

International audience; On-surface synthesis provides a very promising strategy for creating stable functional structures on surfaces. In the past, classical reactions known from solution synthesis have been successfully transferred onto a surface. Due to the presence of the surface, on-surface synthesis provides the potential of directing the reaction pathway in a manner that might not be accessible in classical solution synthesis. In this work, we present evidence for an acetylene polymerization from a terminal alkyne monomer deposited onto calcite (10.4). Strikingly, although the dimer forms on the surface as well, we find no indication for diacetylene polymerization. This is in sharp co…

Identification of the 3-amino-3-carboxypropyl (acp) transferase enzyme responsible for acp3U formation at position 47 in Escherichia coli tRNAs

2019

AbstracttRNAs from all domains of life contain modified nucleotides. However, even for the experimentally most thoroughly characterized model organism Escherichia coli not all tRNA modification enzymes are known. In particular, no enzyme has been found yet for introducing the acp3U modification at position 47 in the variable loop of eight E. coli tRNAs. Here we identify the so far functionally uncharacterized YfiP protein as the SAM-dependent 3-amino-3-carboxypropyl transferase catalyzing this modification and thereby extend the list of known tRNA modification enzymes in E. coli. Similar to the Tsr3 enzymes that introduce acp modifications at U or m1Ψ nucleotides in rRNAs this protein conta…

Hetero-Multifunctional Poly(ethylene glycol) Copolymers with Multiple Hydroxyl Groups and a Single Terminal Functionality

2009

Hetero-multifunctional poly(ethylene glycol-co-glycerol) random copolymers with multiple hydroxyl functionalities and a single terminal functionality have been prepared by copolymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) and ethoxy ethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) with the use of a suitable initiator, introducing a protected amino group or a double bond, respectively. Acidic deprotection was used for removal of the acetal protecting groups in the chain, and the terminal amino group was regenerated by catalytic hydrogenation. A series of copolymers with narrow polydispersity was obtained, varying comonomer fractions from 3 to 67% and molecular weights in the range of 5 000-32 000 g · mol(-1) (1.05 < $\ove…

Heat capacities of butanol and pentanol in aqueous dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide solutions

1987

Heat capacities of the ternary systems water-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)-butanol and water-DTAB-pentanol were measured at 25°C. The standard partial molar heat capacities of pentanol in micellar solutions show a maximum at about 0.35 mol-kg−1 DTAB that has been attributed to a micellar structural transition. This maximum tends to vanish by increasing the alcohol concentration and by decreasing the alcohol alkyl chain length; in the case of butanol it was not detected. The behavior of the standard partial molar heat capacities of alcohols in micellar solutions in the region above the cmc and below the structural transition was explained using a previously reported mass-action mod…

Carbohydrates as Stereodifferentiating Auxiliaries

2017

Carbohydrates are inexpensive natural products. Although they contain numerous functional groups and stereogenic centers in one molecule, carbohydrates were recognized as stereodifferentiating auxiliaries much later than other classes of natural products as for example amino acids or terpenes. Apart from their polyfunctional nature carbohydrates are characterized by the anomeric and exo-anomeric effects which have distinct influence of the spatial orientation of substituents linked to the anomeric position. Based on these stereochemical properties carbohydrates were used as stereodifferentiating auxiliaries in numerous diastereoselective reactions, such as aldol addition, alkylation reactio…

New Studies and a Reinvestigation on [4+2] Cycloadditions of (−)-Thebaine: Asymmetrical Diels-Alder Reactions with a Conformationally Fixed Chiral Di…

1993

Some novel Diels-Alder reactions of the opium alkaloid (−)-thebaine (1) as an electron-rich diene and a reinvestigation of its reactions with cyclic and acyclic dienophiles are described. The π-facial selectivity has been studied on the basis of structural analyses of the cycloadducts. Some related results on [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of 1-methoxy-1,3-cyclohexadiene (11) are also reported.

Synthesis of new soluble polybenzyls by Friedel-Crafts reactions

1999

Soluble polybenzyls were prepared by a catalytic electrophilic Friedel-Crafts type polycondensation between α,α'-dichloro-p-xylene and substituted (by an alkyl or an alkoxy side-chain) mesitylene. The influence of the length of the side-chain on the solubility of the polymer was examined. The polymers were found to be soluble in common organic solvents. Polymer characterizations were made by 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and elemental analysis.

Uranyl Complexes of Alkyl-Bridged Ditopic Diaminotetraphenol Ligands and Their Use as Uranyl Ion Extractors

2013

The coordination chemistry of uranyl ions was studied using long n-alkyl chain (n = 5-8) bridged by N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxy-3-methyl-5-tert-butylbenzyl)diaminoalkanes (H4L1-H4L4) as ligands. All ligands formed 2:1 (U-to-L ratio) complexes with uranyl ions, but in addition 1:1 complexes could be characterized using ligands H4L2 and H4L3. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy (IR and NMR), and X-ray diffraction. The 2:1 complexes are of two types: [(UO2)2(H2Lm)(NO3)2(solvent)2] (m = 1 and 2; solvent = ethanol or propanol) or (cation)2[(UO2)2(H2Lm)(NO3)2(anion)2]·xsolvent (m = 2 and 4; cation = triethylammonium, anion = nitrate or thiocyanate, and solvent = …

Heterogeneous oxidation of pyrimidine and alkyl thioethers in ionic liquids over mesoporous Ti or Ti/Ge catalysts.

2004

Heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of a series of thioethers (2-thiomethylpyrimidine, 2-thiomethyl-4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidine, 2-thiobenzylpyrimidine, 2-thiobenzyl-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, thioanisole, and n-heptyl methyl sulfide) was performed in ionic liquids by using MCM-41 and UVM-type mesoporous catalysts containing Ti, or Ti and Ge. A range of triflate, tetrafluoroborate, trifluoroacetate, lactate and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide-based ionic liquids were used. The oxidations were carried out by using anhydrous hydrogen peroxide or the urea-hydrogen peroxide adduct and showed that ionic liquids are very effective solvents, achieving greater reactivity and selectivity than reactions p…
