Despite a broad cell-type tropism, cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an evidentially pulmonary pathogen. Predilection for the lungs is of medical relevance in immunocompromised recipients of hematopoietic cell transplantation, in whom interstitial CMV pneumonia is a frequent and, if left untreated, fatal clinical manifestation of human CMV infection. A conceivable contribution of CMV to airway diseases of other etiology is an issue that so far attracted little medical attention. Antiasthmatic Effects of <i>Picrorhiza kurroa</i>: Androsin Prevents Allergen- and PAF-induced Bronchial Obstruction in Guinea Pigs

In the Ayurvedic medicine, <i>Picrorhiza kurroa </i>Royle ex Benth. is used for the treatment of liver and lung diseases. Using different chemical and pharmacological methods, we could identify the phenol glycoside androsin as active compound preventing allergen and platelet-activating factor induced bronchial obstruction in guinea pigs in vivo (10 mg/kg p.o.; 1 h prior to the inhalation challenge). Histamine release from human polymorphonuclear leukocytes in vitro was inhibited by other compounds yet to be identified.

The Effect of Outdoor Aeroallergens on Asthma Hospitalizations in Children in North-Western Tuscany, Italy.

Few data are currently available on the effects of aeroallergens in triggering respiratory symptoms in children. To evaluate the potential effects of daily outdoor aeroallergens loads on childhood admissions, in this case-crossover study, we analyzed data from 85 children hospitalized at the University Hospital of Pisa, Italy, for asthma or asthma-like symptoms without respiratory infection, between 2010 and 2019. Data were linked to outdoor allergens, temperature, nitrogen dioxide, and relative humidity observed during the same period. Comparison of ammoniated and nonammoniated extracts in children with latex allergy

Background:  The use of ammoniated or nonammoniated latex extracts for the diagnosis of latex allergy is still a matter of debate. The aim of our study was to compare the characteristics of the two types of extracts by immunoblotting and RAST techniques in children with ascertained latex allergy. Increased Level of Intracellular MHC Class II Molecules in Murine Langerhans Cells Following In Vivo and In Vitro Administration of Contact Allergens

Treatment of murine Langerhans cells (LC) with contact allergens results in increased internalization of cell membrane constituents and therefore in depressed cell-surface expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules during the first hours after haptenization.
