Holographic recording of surface relief gratings in tolyle-based azobenzene oligomers

Abstract Holographic recording of surface relief gratings (SRG) in tolyle-based azobenzene oligomer films have been carried out at 514.5 nm. It was experimentally studied by spectroscopic and AFM methods. The maximum surface modulation amplitude was 35 nm. SRG formation is explained by the mean-field model and by the photodegradation of chromophores enabling the directional mass transport as the result of trans–cis transformations. The conclusion is made that SRG are stable but the diffraction efficiency (DE) changes are due to the complementary decaying amplitude-phase gratings. Abstract ZnO nanorods grown on buffered and non buffered sapphire substrates have been investigated by X-ray multiple diffraction using Renninger scans of the ZnO(0001) and ZnO(0003) forbidden reflections. In this technique the diffracted X-ray beam is simultaneously diffracted by several sets of planes, providing information on the broadening in different directions, as well as from nanorods, and from the layer on which they grow. High-energy transmission x-ray diffraction techniques have been applied to investigate the crystal quality of CdZnTe (CZT). CdZnTe has shown excellent performance in hard x-ray and gamma detection; unfortunately, bulk nonuniformities still limit spectroscopic properties of CZT detectors. Collimated high-energy x-rays, produced by a superconducting wiggler at the National Synchrotron Light Source’s X17B1 beamline, allow for a nondestructive characterization of thick CZT samples (2–3 mm). Abstract An original experiment was designed to monitor structural and thermal evolutions during the MASHS (Mechanically Activated Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) process in the Mo–Si system. Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction (TRXRD) coupled with an infrared imaging technique was performed to study, in situ, the formation of the α-MoSi2 phase in the combustion front. Despite a temporal resolution of 50 ms between two consecutive diffractograms, no intermediate phase was observed during the passage of the combustion front. Abstract Vibrational and structural properties of lead-free piezoelectric (1-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–xCaTiO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.00) solid solutions have been investigated using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Different anomalies were detected and analyzed taking into consideration the phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase at room temperature. All Raman bands were interpreted through the variation in the peak positions (frequency) and the corresponding half-widths at half maximum (HWHM) as a function of x. Crystal behavior of potassium bromate under compression.

We report on high-pressure angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction data up to 15 GPa andab initiototal-energy calculations up to 242 GPa for KBrO3. No phase transition was found below 15 Pa in contrast to previously reported data. Its experimental bulk modulus in the quasi-hydrostatic regime isB0= 18.8 (9) GPa with a bulk modulus pressure derivativeB′0= 8.2 (4). However, according to ourab initiocalculations, KBrO3significantly reduces its rhombohedral distortionviasmall cooperative movements of the atoms and the structure progressively approaches the cubic symmetry, where the KBr subarray would adopt a topology similar to that of the corresponding B2-type bromide. Pressure-induced phase transformations in mineral chalcocite, Cu2S, under hydrostatic conditions

Abstract High-pressure room-temperature angle-dispersive powder X-ray diffraction measurements on Cu2S chalcocite were performed up to 30 GPa using a diamond-anvil cell, He as pressure transmitting medium and synchrotron radiation. Two first-order phase transitions were found at 3.2 and 7.4 GPa. The indexation of the powder diffraction patterns suggests three different monoclinic cells for the low-pressure chalcocite and the two high-pressure phases. Subtle changes in the X-ray diffraction patterns suggest a third pressure-induced transition above 26 GPa. Structural parameters and compressibility are discussed and compared to those reported in a previous study on Cu2S nanowires.
Chirality effects on 2D phase transitions

Monolayers of the racemate and pure enantiomers of 1-hexadecyl-glycerol were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID) at 5 and 20 °C on compression from 0 mN m−1 to pressures greater than 30 mN m−1. The racemate lattice is centred-rectangular for both temperatures at all investigated pressures. However, at both temperatures, there is a sharp phase transition from a low-pressure phase, in which the molecules are tilted towards nearest neighbours (NN) and the distortion azimuth also points towards NN, to a high-pressure phase, in which the molecules are tilted towards next-nearest neighbours (NNN) and an NNN-distorted lattice is observed. Abstract The structure of monolayers of Cd arachidate on water and on solid support, and the thickness dependent changes when building up a multilayer via the LB technique are studied by means of grazing incidence diffraction of X-ray. In monolayers the perpendicularly oriented amphiphilic molecules are arranged in a hexagonal lattice, whereas for thicker layers (even for three layers) they crystallize in an orthorhombic unit cell with a reduced molecular are ( A = 18.2 A 2 ) compared to that of the monolayer ( A = 19.7 A 2 ). Structural and vibrational behavior of cubic Cu1.80(3)Se cuprous selenide, berzelianite, under compression

[EN] We have performed an experimental study of the crystal structure and lattice dynamics of cubic Cu1.80(3)Se at ambient temperature and high pressures. Two reversible phase transitions were found at 2.9 and 8.7 GPa. The indexation of the angle-dispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction patterns suggests a large orthorhombic cell and a monoclinic cell for the high-pressure phases. Raman measurements provide additional information on the local structure. The compressibility of the three ambient temperature phases has been determined and compared to that of other sulphides and selenides.
